The AnnuAl Spring ConvenTion – a must attend event for the industry!Dear Fellow Industry Professionals, I invite you to the 2019 ASC Annual Spring Convention and EXPO being held April 8-10 at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown. As you know, this once-per-year event is the largest gathering in the U.S. of professionals like you in the adhesive and sealant supply chain. Building off last year’s record attendance and largest-ever EXPO, this year’s convention is shaping up to be another must-attend event. With proximity to many ASC members, Philadelphia is an ideal meeting destination for you and your teams to network with peers and learn from experts on a variety of hot topics. Our opening keynote is futurist and generations expert Matt Thornhill, founder of the Institute for Tomorrow, who will share top traits of best-in-class organizations and why what they’re doing works and how to fully leverage multiple generations in the workplace. Day One features numerous key topics such key feedstocks in adhesives and sealants, building and construction trends influencing the industry, domestic and international regulatory developments, advanced technology, and sustainability. During lunch, special recognitions will be announced, including recipients of this year’s ASC’s Scholarship Program, inductees in ASC’s new Hall of Fame, and graduates of ASC’s Certificate Program. Day Two’s keynote is Jack Shaw, co-founder of the American Blockchain Council, who will discuss “The Blockchain Transformation: How Enabled Digital Transformation Will Change Your Business, Your Industry, and the World.” Session highlights for Day Two include workforce and business success strategies, topics important to small businesses, new product introductions, product innovations by finalists of ASC’s Innovations Award, and pressure sensitive adhesives. Day Three’s keynote is Joe Wheeler, co-director of the Center for Design Research and Professor of Architecture, at Virginia Tech, who will present “Architects and Adhesives – A Perspective on Designing the HAUS of the Future.” Additionally, two co-located short courses are scheduled over two days focusing on Pressure Sensitive Adhesives—presenting formulation strategies, based on application and performance requirements for a variety of pressure sensitive adhesive markets by industry professional—and Caulks and Sealants—presenting a thorough understanding of the functions and applications of caulks and sealants ideal for RD&E, Application Engineers, Technical Sales/Service, Architects, Specifiers, Project managers. Also, our Opening and Closing Receptions provide excellent opportunities for you to network with fellow industry professionals. Lastly, we will once again feature more than 100 exhibitors in the ASC EXPO, where the leading suppliers, technologies and solutions in the adhesive and sealant market will be on hand to meet with you. As you can see, there is a lot of value built into two days at ASC’s Annual Spring Convention. Now that it is once per year, you cannot afford to miss it. Review the program schedule for the most recent lineup. You can also check for updates at www.ascouncil.org or by contacting an ASC staff member. I look forward to seeing you in Philadelphia. Best regards,

Brian McSwigan Vice President, Pressure Sensitive Adhesives, Henkel Corporation ASC Chair (2019-2020)

Architects and Adhesives – A Perspective on designing the HAUS of the FutureJoseph Wheeler, Co-Director; Center for Design Research & Professor of Architecture, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State UniversityThe FutureHAUS research proposes the future of how we will build and how we

will live in the digital age. The research team proposes that in the future homes will be manufactured much like cars and will fully engage CNC processes for fabrication. The industrialized process provides the quality control necessary to integrate advanced smart technologies in homes but also improves efficiency in the construction process. The team also explores the future of smart technology in the home and how we will ultimately interface with it. The presentation will provide an overview of this research and address how, in the proposed prefabrication and manufacturing process, adhesives are becoming the “hardware” of the future.Joe Wheeler is a professor of architecture at Virginia Tech, co-director of the university’s Center for Design Research, and a globally recognized innovator in the areas of housing industrialization, environmental sustainability, and technology integration. As leader of Virginia Tech’s FutureHAUS project, Wheeler has spent over a decade helping student researchers and industry, government, and academic partners explore solutions to the world’s global housing challenges. He has lead Virginia Tech’s interdisciplinary Solar Decathlon projects in 2005, 2009 and 2010 and 2018 to build the world’s best solar home. The 2010 Virginia Tech entry, Lumenhaus, won first place overall in the international competition in Madrid, Spain, as well as the first national Honor Award for a university from the American Institute of Architects. Most recently, further validating his future building concept, his FutureHAUS Dubai won first place overall in the 2018 Solar Decathlon Middle East. In 2016 he was received the HIVE 100 Award as one of the top innovators in housing in the country by Builder Magazine. Other awards include a national design honor award from the AIA, the NCARB Prize for creative collaboration between the academy and the profession, the Virginia Society AIA Research Prize, and the Xcaliber University Prize for Excellence in Outreach. He has offered testimony before Congress regarding national energy issues and worked with U.S. international government agencies on issues of sustainability, affordable housing, disaster relief, and modular construction.

Short Course program DescriptionCaulks and sealants are primarily used in building construction and transportation to bond surfaces together, fill gaps and serve as a physical barrier. Due to their use in bonding substrates with differing coefficients of thermal expansion, sealants are formulated to have higher elongation and paste like viscosities to allow for gap filling applications. Taught by industry experts, ASC’s two-day, technical short course will help you gain a better understanding of the functions and applications of caulks and sealants.

Participants are invited to attend the ASC EXPO at no additional charge to network with the industry and learn about the latest innovations in the industry.
