Through lowering stress hormones and balancing blood sugar, weight loss is dramatically facilitated.
2:15-3 p.m. Affordable Care Act: What Does It Mean for Obesity Medicine? (Christopher Gallagher)ASBP Advocacy Advisor Chris Gallagher will discuss the impact of the Affordable Care Act on patient access to and coverage of obesity treatment services as states move forward on setting up health exchange plans. Recent efforts at the federal level to address coverage of new U.S. Food & Drug Administration-approved obesity medications in both public and private health plans will also be highlighted.

2:30-3:15 p.m. Wireless Health Approaches to Health Behavior Measurement and Intervention: Applications in Obesity and Other Health Conditions (Kevin Patrick, M.D., M.S.)Smartphone applications, wireless fitness devices, social media and cloud computing provide unprecedented opportunities to monitor health behaviors, provide users with real-time feedback to improve these behaviors and to promote health through engagement of friends and family. Dr. Patrick will provide an overview of this area and provide some examples of research currently underway at University of California, San Diego, in the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology.

3:45-4:30 p.m. Clinical Pearls and Nuggets for the Bariatrician (Scott Rigden, M.D., F.A.A.F.P., F.A.S.B.P.) A sharing of interesting, difficult clinical cases from Dr. Rigden's office practice. Examples include patients with diabetes and metabolic syndrome, a Pima Indian who lost more than 150 pounds, and sumo wrestlers. Cases with wheat-free diets and musculoskeletal inflammation will be shared. Learn how a bad case of eczema was the clue needed to facilitate a 70-pound weight loss. Leave this presentation with practical tools to use on Monday morning.
4:30-5:15 p.m. Legal Issues in Practicing Bariatric Medicine (David Bryman, D.O.)This session, presented by ASBP President Dr. David Bryman who testifies on behalf of bariatricians, will provide case examples and tips on how to maintain compliance with state medical board rules.

Dr. Le Roux will discuss how surgery works, and how using emerging and established medications and devices may make it possible to replicate many of the metabolic benefits of surgery.
