From the Pastor’s Desk… Jesus, our reason for loving and for growing, our reason for being and for believing, comes to our lives in many different ways. He came to the life of St. Augustine through the prayers of his mother St. Monica. He came to the life of T. S. Elliot within the world of literature and the perfect metaphor. Jesus took by storm the life to Thomas Merton his interest in journalism and philosophical argumentation. He also took over the life of Dorothy Day through her work with the poor and the economically unfit. He came to all these lives, called them, and was given an answer. Jesus might come to our lives in the most unexpected ways, through our marriage with a Christian spouse or the first communion of our child, or perhaps after a personal tragedy of losing a beloved one. Or maybe he came to us and made himself present since our cradles and even in some cases he came “with mother’s milk”. The fact remains that he comes to us in the magnificent and the beautiful, in the marvelous and the luminous, but he also comes to us in the simple and ordinary. Today’s readings are a testimony of such. It was just another day down at the shore of Galilee when the invitation came. Today’s invitation to Peter, Andrew, James, and John, the two sets of brothers in the gospel, was direct and simple. Nothing was promised, no hints of what was going to happen were given, and no hesitation or regret on the part of the invited was uttered. They simply let go of their nets and boats and they answered the call. Only one thing mattered for them, the letting go of the control that they had of their lives as a way of following Jesus and becoming fishers of men. Ordinary people with no special training or special skills were invited to bring the knowledge and the love of God to the whole world. These are the first sparks of Jesus’ ministry, these are the initial calling of our discipleship, and these are the origins of our Church, simple, uncomplicated, and humble. Jesus gave us a mission, a loving responsibility of preaching, teaching, and healing. The ministry that Jesus began at the shores of Galilee has become the honor and the responsibility of His body, the body of Christ, and of its members, us, the Church. The call made to the disciples fashioned our call and gave us a model of discipleship worthy to be followed and worthy of all the baptized. Regardless of being a cradle Catholic, a convert, a Catholic returning home, an anonymous Catholic or a Catholic through marriage we know that we must respond. No matter how Jesus chooses to approach us there is always that moment where once we know about the redemptive love of God and out of our free will we say, “yes, I believe and I want to follow Him.” And the answer must come from the depth of our lives, from our daily struggles, dreams, disappointments, visions, achievements and endeavors. It involves the ups and downs of a life that struggles between our personal miseries and our desire to serve God. Right now we are presented with the opportunity of responding to Him with all our minds, with all our souls, and with all our hearts and to follow Him in cooperation with His plan. We must not forget that we are the hands of God and that the bounty of God is released with men and women like ourselves in every walk of life. We turn to God with everything we have and respond “yes”. Let us preach, teach and heal this world by making Jesus our Choice.

Jesús, nuestra razón para amar y para crecer, nuestra razón de ser y de creer, viene a nuestras vidas de muchas maneras diferentes. Llegó a la vida de San Agustín a través de las oraciones de su madre, Santa Mónica. Llegó a la vida de T. S. Elliot dentro del mundo de la literatura y la metáfora perfecta. Jesús sorprendió la vida de Thomas Merton a través de su interés en el periodismo y la argumentación filosófica. También se hizo cargo de la vida de Dorothy Day a través de su trabajo con los pobres y los económicamente no aptos. Llegó a todas estas vidas, los llamó y recibió una respuesta. Jesús pudo haber llegado a nuestras vidas de las

No se prometió nada, no se dieron indicios de lo que iba a suceder y no se emitieron vacilaciones ni arrepentimientos por parte de los invitados. Simplemente soltaron sus redes y botes y respondieron al llamado. Solo les importaba una cosa, dejar a un lado el control que tenían de sus vidas como una forma de seguir a Jesús y convertirse en pescadores de hombres. Se invitó a personas ordinarias sin entrenamiento especial o habilidades especiales a llevar el conocimiento y el amor de Dios a todo el mundo. Estos son los primeros destellos del ministerio de Jesús, estos son el llamado inicial de nuestro discipulado y estos son los orígenes de nuestra Iglesia, simples, sencillos y humildes. Jesús nos dio una misión, una responsabilidad amorosa de predicar, enseñar y sanar. El ministerio que Jesús comenzó en las costas de Galilea se ha convertido en el honor y la responsabilidad de su cuerpo, el Cuerpo de Cristo y de sus miembros, nosotros, la Iglesia. El llamado hecho a los discípulos formó nuestro llamado y nos dio un modelo de discipulado digno de ser seguido y digno de todos los bautizados. Independientemente de ser un católico de cuna, un converso, un católico que regresa a casa, un católico anónimo o un católico a través del matrimonio, sabemos que debemos responder. No importa cómo decida Jesús acercarse a nosotros, siempre hay un momento en el que una vez que conocemos el amor redentor de Dios y con nuestro libre albedrío decimos: "Sí, creo y quiero seguirlo". Y la respuesta debe venir de la profundidad de nuestras vidas, de nuestras luchas diarias, sueños, desilusiones, visiones, logros y esfuerzos. Implica los altibajos de una vida que lucha entre nuestras miserias personales y nuestro deseo de servir a Dios. En este momento se nos presenta la oportunidad de responder a Él con todas nuestras mentes, con todas nuestras almas y con todo nuestro corazón, y seguirlo en cooperación con Su plan. No debemos olvidar que somos las manos de Dios y que la generosidad de Dios se libera con hombres y mujeres como nosotros en todos los ámbitos de la vida. Nos volvemos a Dios con todo lo que tenemos y respondemos "sí". Permítanos predicar, enseñar y sanar este mundo haciendo a Jesús nuestra elección.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS NOTICIAS DEL CATECISMO The Lord's Peace be with you!

Last weekend I attended a second formation workshop on Catechetical Methodology in Mundelein as part of the Institute of Lay Formation Catechetical Coordinator Certification program. The presenter was Joe Paprocki, the national consultant for faith formation at Loyola Press. One of the topics was Divine “Pedagogy”, or teaching as God teaches. It stems from the principle that the initiative comes from God and everything else is our response. Following are some main points concerning Divine Pedagogy:

• Emphasis on God’s love for all, and our response to that love

• Progressive/gradual nature of God’s revelation and its adaptation to our differences (culture/persons)

• Placing Christ at the center of all catechetical efforts • Value the community’s experience of faith • Rooted in interpersonal relations and process of

dialogue • Use signs that link word and deed to teaching and

experience • Bear witness to truth and draw power from truth

revealed by the Holy Spirit

We will be looking for opportunities in the future to implement these principles as a means to take a more Christocentric approach to catechesis.

¡La Paz del Señor esté con ustedes!

El fin de semana pasado asistí a un segundo taller de formación sobre metodología catequética en Mundelein como parte del programa de certificación de coordinadores de catequesis del Instituto de Formación Laico. El presentador fue Joe Paprocki, consultor nacional para formación de fe en Loyola Press. Uno de los temas era "Pedagogía" Divina, o enseñanza modelando como enseña Dios. Deriva del principio que la iniciativa viene de Dios y todo lo demás es nuestra respuesta. Los siguientes son algunos puntos sobre la Pedagogía Divina:

• Énfasis en el amor de Dios por todos y nuestra respuesta a ese amor

• Naturaleza progresiva/gradual de la revelación de Dios y su adaptación a nuestras diferencias (cultura/personas)

• Colocar a Cristo en el centro de todo esfuerzo catequético

• Valorar la experiencia comunitaria de fe • Cementada en las relaciones interpersonales y proceso

de diálogo • Usar signos que vinculan la palabra y obra a la

enseñanza y experiencia • Atestiguar a la verdad y obtener energía de la verdad

revelada por el Espíritu Santo

En el futuro estaremos buscando oportunidades para aplicar estos principios a fin de tomar un enfoque más Cristocéntrico a nuestro ministerio de catequesis.

The Appeal funds services that are of great help to ministries here in our Parish. For example, Appeal funds support our youth group, food pantry and our religious education program. This year, the theme of the Appeal is “Come, Follow Me.” We have all received God’s love.
