What efforts, if any, did your Chapter make in 2008 to encourage non-member designees and candidates to join your chapter?
In an effort to strengthen membership in southern part of the state, the Chapter participated as a sponsor of the first Gulf Coast Commercial Real Estate Summit and Market Review, held on Feb. 27, 2008, at the Mobile Arthur R. Outlaw Convention Center. Sponsored by the University of South Alabama Mitchell College of Business USA Center for Real Estate Studies. The summit consisted of presentations about commercial properties, the Coastal economy and wind and water insurance.
Donald Epley, pictured at left, is the director of the Mitchell College of Business Center for Real Estate Studies and led the event. Attendees included 2006 Mobilian of the Year Abe Mitchell, pictured at right.
In addition, the Chapter sponsored a CCIM Student Outreach & Networking Dinner at the University of Albama (Tuscaloosa) with Rho Epsilon (real estate fraternity) and the Alabama Center for Real Estate.

Provide an overview of one NEW event that your Chapter did in 2008:
The Alabama Chapter hosted its first annual…..
“Leaders of Industry Event”
This event was designed to recognize the leadership and contributions of past Chapter Presidents and to raise money forCCIM Named Endowed Scholarships. The event this year was such a success that we completed funded our 3rd Name Endowed Scholarship, the Bill Moss Scholarship. The Chapter intends to make this an annual event and a vehicle to raise scholarship funds
6
If your Chapter has an annual “signature” event, give brief details. Compare the turnout and success of the event in 2008 to previous years.
Our “signature” event is actually two events, the Central Alabama Commercial Market Symposium (Birmingham) and the North Alabama Commercial Market Symposium (Huntsville). These two events are designed to provide attendees with a review and forecast of the commercial real estate industry in the State of Alabama. The turnout for both events were sold out in advanced.
Huntsville, Alabama
Students from the Alabama Center for Real Estate joined us for the Birmingham Event.

What was your Chapter’s greatest accomplishment in 2008 ?Our chapter’s greatest accomplishment has to be that we were able to secure and fully fund two Named Endowed Scholarships in 2008. The first one was secured early in 2008 in honor of Bill Moss. During the year, we raised money from our membership to enable us to fully fund the endowment by October of 2008. In late November, we were ableto work with the CCIM Education Foundation leadership to secure another NES that we chose to name for Troy McClendon. Before theend of the year, we submitted chapter funds sufficient to complete the endowment. The decision to name the scholarship for Troy was kept secret until February 11th, 2009 in order to allow CCIM National President Mac McClure to make the announcement to his friend in conjunction with a Chapter visit and program delivered to our membership. This award brings to three the number of annual scholarships our chapter will be able to fund for our future leaders. We are proud to be THE commercial real estate education provider inAlabama.
Our most recent Named Endowed Scholarship in honor of Troy McClendon, long-time instructor and supporter of the Alabama Chapter. Troy above with Mac McClure.

I am pleased to submit this application for the 2008 President’s Cup on behalf of the members of the Alabama Chapter. Our membership is extremely active and our Board of Directors has performed admirably in 2008 to provide more education, networking and technology benefits for our members. It has been my great pleasure and honor to have served as President of the Chapter in 2008 and work, always, toward increasing the stature of the CCIM organization in our state and create value for our members.
Our chapter hosted six chapter events and conducted eight courses in 2008 and a portfolio workshop. For a chapter our size, this fact alone is quite impressive. There is no way we would be able to organize and hold this number of quality programs without our devoted Chapter Administrator, Amy Adkins. This year, Amy amazed us all as she led our chapter through these successful events while she suffered the startling and sudden deaths of her husband on January 4th and her brother in July. Amy’s dedication, unsurpassed energy and cheerfulness have earned the deepest gratitude of our members and warrants special recognition.
The Alabama Chapter has the majority of its members living in and around Birmingham. Our aim in 2008 was to continue to create opportunities for networking and membership building across our state – from the burgeoning Huntsville market in north Alabama to Mobile and the Baldwin County market along the Gulf Coast. In 2007, we launched a North Alabama Market Symposium which was well received. In 2008, we expanded the North Alabama Market Symposium and again had a standing room only crowd. In addition to our long running and successful Central Alabama Market Symposium in Birmingham this year with a keynote address by noted CNBC economist, Joe Keating, we joined forces with the University of South Alabama in Mobile to sponsor the Gulf Coast Summit. This inaugural event drew a crowd of over 300 commercial practitioners from South Alabama and allowed the Alabama CCIM Chapter to reach out to this underserved area of our state.
Our annual Beach Meeting held in Gulf Shores, Alabama, was well attended drawing members from all across Alabama to the sunny Fort Morgan peninsula to attend a seminar led by Randy McKinney, CCIM on 1031 Exchanges and a State of the Institute address by CCIM National President, Tim Hatlestat. Members in attendance were treated to two spirited networking opportunities coinciding with the famed Mullet Toss at the FloraBama. Our annual bus trip to Atlanta to watch a Braves Baseball game was another rousing success which was attended by our own members and a contingent from the Tennessee chapter that heard we know how to have a good time in Alabama.
Executive Summary
9
In keeping with our dedication to providing quality educational opportunities to our membership – and the members of the future – we continue to build our Alabama Chapter core and Intro class offerings as well as providing scholarship assistance to college students studying real estate in colleges and universities in our state. In 2008, we again granted a Charlie White Named Endowed Scholarship to a student at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. In January of 2008, we announced to our membership that we were awarded an opportunity to endow a scholarship in honor of Bill Moss, another outstanding CCIM Instructor from our state, founding member of our local chapter, and 2007 recipient of the CCIM Instructor of the Year award. During the year, a successful fund raising campaign was conducted to raise the $12,500 needed to fully fund that endowment with the final push being made at our first ever Leaders in Industry banquet honoring the leadership of the Alabama Chapter over the 30 years of its history. By October, 2008, we had fully funded the Bill Moss Named Endowed Scholarship and agreed to award it annually to a student attending the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Bill’s home town. And, another education related success in 2008, was the increasing partnership we are forging with the University of Alabama’s ACRE program (Alabama Center for Real Estate) which we have assisted in being named a University Alliance partner with the national CCIM organization.
Our hard work is paying dividends. In 2008 we were honored in Chicago during the Chapter Training sessions with several awards. We applied for and received approval from the national organization to participate in the Unified Dues Billing program. By December, 2008, our membership ranks had grown from 318 to 370 members.
The year ahead presents a number of difficult challenges for our members and our industry. We believe that our CCIM Chapter is well positioned to be a source for much help to our members as we find a way to assist our clients in these uncharted waters. Our stellar education, our incredible network of friends and associates across the U.S., and the technological tools our members enjoy through the national organization will provide the support we need to ensure our survival and our success. Now, more than ever, we are proud to be affiliated with the premier commercial real estate organization in our industry.
Thank you for your consideration of our chapter for the 2008 President’s Cup.
Respectfully submitted,
Barbara BushnellPresident 2008

President MessageGreetings!
As I write this letter, I have just returned from Chicago where the FallBusiness meetings for the CCIM Institute were held. There is a wealth of inter-esting stuff going on within our Institute regarding our core concepts –Networking, Education and Technology. Be sure to watch this newsletter forexciting announcements in the coming months.
While there has been much unsettling news from Wall Street andWashington, DC in recent weeks, there are many positive things to report toyou about the Alabama CCIM Chapter. In August, our Chapter officers attended a training session inChicago along with over 200 other chapter leaders from across the United States and the world to discussbest practices and to strengthen alliances with other chapters regionally. Our Alabama Chapter won aslew of awards for excellence in areas relating to the quality of our newsletter and the tremendous pro-gram offerings we have for our Chapter members. I am sure some other chapter leaders got jealous watch-ing Amy Adkins, John Hardin and me walk to the podium to accept so many awards – more than anyother chapter represented! While these meetings were going on, there were CCIM Candidates sitting forthe comprehensive exam – an “off-cycle” exam offering to help accommodate the tremendous demand ofstudents wishing to earn the pin before the year end. One of those students was our own JR Bertram, the19th new Alabama CCIM designee for 2008. Great news, but not the end of the story.
In October, we pinned another 21 designees from Alabama. Please join me in congratulating our newdesignees which are listed in this newsletter as our latest Alabama CCIMs. That raises our total for 2008to 40 new designees. It hasn’t been that long ago that we had a total of 40 CCIMs statewide!
In September, we held our Leaders in Industry awards dinner to recognize our CCIM Chapter leader-ship through its 30 year history and, more specifically, to raise money to fund the William H. Moss NamedEndowed Scholarship. I am pleased to announce that, as a result of that dinner, and other contributionswe received from across our state and from CCIMs from Canada to California and everywhere in betweenwho love Bill Moss, we were able to fully fund the endowment for that scholarship. Beginning nextSpring, we will be able to award a scholarship in his honor at the University of South Alabama. Bill wasnotified of this good news last month at our national meeting in Chicago. I hope you will be able to joinus at our December 2nd Christmas party to help us celebrate this great news with Bill.
This year is quickly coming to a close. We had a Director’s Retreat last month at Willow Point withincoming President Chip Watts to make our plans for the year ahead. I know, under his leadership, weare in for a great year in 2009.
I look forward to seeing all of you November 14th for the 15th Annual Market Symposium inBirmingham. John Hardin has arranged for us to have Joseph Keating, Chief Financial Investment Officerwith RBC Bank to be our keynote speaker. It appears we have sold out again this year. All of us are eagerto hear his outlook for the year ahead. And, you will not want to miss the fun Programs Chair, ConnieHarris and her fabulous committee members have planned for us at the Cahaba Grand on December 2ndfor the Christmas Party. We will also have a live band, III out of IV. and Tony Rickard, Region 9 VP, willperform the official installation of officers for 2009.

The Alabama Chapter of CCIM once again is happy toaward two scholarships for the CI-101 course to deservingreal estate practitioners, who wish to increase their profes-sional skills .The five-day course provides training in thefinancial analysis of real property ownership and invest-ment, giving the commercial broker skills and abilities toassist buyers, sellers and tenants in making sound businessdecisions.
At the CCIM/NAIOP Market Symposium on November14, 2008, the Chapter is pleased to award scholarships toJeremy L. Norman and Brooks C. Corr. An additional spe-cial award will be made to Marquelon Sigler.

Our first annual fundraiser dinner at the Innovation Depot was implemented this year to raise money for the William H.Moss Scholarship fund. We honored all past presidents of the chapter and had a good turnout. We had cocktails on theroof sponsored by CIT Finance and were serenaded with a student band from the School of Fine Arts. The CulinardInstitute catered our delicious buffet dinner. Past President Raymond Gotlieb emceed the evening along with ChapterPresident Barbara Bushnell. It was so good to see everyone get together; the McLains from Huntsville, the Barnhills fromMobile, the Turners from Montgomery, Dallas Whitaker from Orlando, etc. We fully funded the William H. MossScholarship and it will be awarded next year. Thanks to our special projects chair, Dick Berliner, and his committee fordoing such a fine job.
