From the Headmaster Mr Gareth Leechman
As we quickly come towards the end of another term I thought I would take the time to
remind the college community of the many wonderful things our students have been
achieving and been involved in over the past few weeks.
A few weeks ago students were involved in our own Arndell Anglican College Equestrian
Carnival, over 200 participants from a range of schools were involved. It was a wonderful day
and I thoroughly enjoyed the time I was able to spend there as a time keeper in the sporting
events section. Equestrian carnivals are becoming harder and harder to arrange as insurance
companies become more demanding in their requirements. We are noticing that more and
more schools are no longer able to conduct carnivals and this is a shame as so many students
get so much out of riding in them. At Arndell Anglican College we will remain committed to
operating our carnival for as long as possible and I would like to thank Miss Kristen Bailey for
all her hard work in enabling our carnival to continue. She was ably supported by a group of
parent volunteers as well as the College’s Business Manager, Mrs Jodie Woods and my EA
Mrs Roxanne Arnold. Thank you to all involved and we look forward to seeing everyone back
next year.
Over the course of the past year we have had several debating teams entered into the HICES
Debating competition. These teams are coached by our Careers and Tertiary Advisor, Mr Tom
Lavelle and in recent times our performances have continued to improve. This year we had
two teams reach the quarter final stages, then one of the teams made the semi-final and I
am pleased to announce that the Open team of Bethany McNamara, Lleyton Bird, Emily May
and Rosie Rogers defeated The Hills Grammar School in the semi – final, meaning that we
have had our first ever team through to a HICES Debating Competition Grand Final. This is a
wonderful achievement for these students and we celebrate with them, as well as wish them
all the best as they debate later on this week.
On the sporting field several of our teams have made it through to Hills Zone Sports
Association Grand Finals. Under the leadership of the Director of Sport, Mr Peter Gordon,

our sporting teams are on the whole enjoying a great deal of success and I would like to thank all of the staff who
give up their time to coach our students. Sport helps build a culture of belonging as well as achievement and this is
starting to have a positive outcome in the classroom as well. Congratulations to the Under 14 Rugby team who had
a well - earned, but hard fought victory over William Clarke College to be names Hills Zone Champions. Good luck
to the rest of the teams as the winter season ends soon.
Then in the Junior School we were able to host a wonderful Grand Parents Day. Thank you to all of the Junior School
staff for their organisation of the day. We received so many positive comments from our visitors and this is a
reflection of the hard work that our Junior School Staff put in. We look forward to Grand Parents Day 2017!
Finally, in staffing news I am pleased to announce that Mrs Katrina New has accepted the role as Head of Visual Arts
here at Arndell Anglican College. Katrina is an experienced Visual Arts teacher, Senior Marker in the HSC and
regularly speaks at conferences for Visual Arts teachers. Katrina is currently the Head of Creative and Performing
Arts at Rouse Hill Anglican College. She is a welcome addition to our team. In relation to staffing I would like to
inform the college community that I will be away from the college during term 4 of this year on study leave. I have
saved my study leave over the past seven years so that I could use it to finish writing my PhD. In discussion with the
College Council we have decided that term 4 this year would be the best time for me to take this leave. In my
absence the Deputy Headmaster, Mr James Webb will become the Acting Headmaster for the term. Mr Webb is
well known to us and I have no doubt that he will lead the college well in my absence.

Rev Jeremy Clark
Philippians 3:8-9 - ‘I also consider everything to be a loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus
my Lord. Because of him I have suffered the loss of all things and consider them filth, so that I may gain Christ
and be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own from the law, but one that is through faith in
Christ.’
‘Hey Usain’, the phone call begins, ‘I would really love to win a gold medal at the next Olympics in Tokyo. I can’t do
it myself, I don’t have the time to train. Could you run for me and then give me the gold medal?’ So suggested a
recent speaker in our Senior School Chapel.
The boldness of the request is laughable. If Usain Bolt is to compete at the Olympics again he is unlikely to do it for
someone else and just give them the gold medal. In the Rio Olympics Usain raced an amazing 100m but even he fell
short of his goal. He wanted the gold in a world record time. He got the gold but not the time (missing by 23
hundredths of a second).
God’s gold medal, eternal life, far outweighs even an Olympic gold medal. Unlike the Olympics where at least one
person will win gold, humans fall short of God’s perfect standard. We need someone to run for us, to achieve the
victory. Fortunately, someone runs for humanity, meeting the standard and taking the pain for everyone. This
someone is Jesus, who dies on the cross for our sins, rising to life in victory.
Amazingly, Jesus then shares his victory with all those who trust in him. Paul writes to the Philippians making the
point that everything else in life is useless in comparison to knowing Christ. A bit like our athletes who give up on
everything in life just to win that gold medal. Christians realise that they will not be good enough (righteous) for
God and need a righteous person to go in their place. By having faith in this righteous person they too are found in
Jesus and are sure of eternal life.
Surely this eternal victory is too important to ignore.

Australian Mathematics Competition Mrs Jennifer Turnbull
The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) has been held annually since 1978. The AMC was the first
competition of its kind in Australia and is now one of the largest of its type in the world. More than 30 countries
participate each year. The competition aims to be accessible to all students from Years 3 to 12, not just the
mathematically gifted. There is an emphasis on problem solving, a valuable life skill, and the questions are designed
to be fun for the student.
This year, Arndell students gained 4 Distinctions, 10 Credits with 5 Proficiency Certificates.
The Distinctions go to Caleb Clark (Year 7 – top 5%); David Lavelle (Year 10 – top 9%); Nathan Lewis (Year 8 – top
12%) and Clayton Isaacs (Year 8 – top 15%).
Credits: William McGregor (Year 7), Annalyse Garton (Year 8), Freeman Liu (Year 8), Teale Simmons (Year 8), Gemma
Thompson (Year 8), Joel Denning (Year 8), Caitlyn Holder (Year 8), David Sproule (Year 10), Coco Chen (Year 10),
Bronte Hickman (Year 11).
Proficiency: Shakthi Ramesh (Year 7), Ben Webb (Year 7), William Bell (Year 8), Josiah Jackson (Year 10), Harrison
Chambers (Year 10).
Well done to all the students who entered the competition and to their teachers for the fine tuition throughout the
year.
FIT Leadership Training Rev Jeremy Clark
With excitement and enthusiasm twenty-four year 5 and 6 students jumped on the bus for the Crusaders Followers
in Training (FIT) leadership afternoon at Norwest Christian College on Tuesday 23rd August. Arndell students met
with students from Norwest and were encouraged to show love to others at school. Cru actively support our
Christian lunchtime groups and specifically challenged the students to make their group even better. Smaller
discussion groups then explored specifically how to promote, run and love others who attend Cru. We are already
seeing the fruit of this day with three Year 6 students advertising Cru and JOLT at Junior School Chapel.
For those who are interested the following groups run each week at the College:
JOLT – Years 2-4, Wednesday lunch, in the Computer Room next to Mr
Peterson’s office.
Cru – Years 5-6, Tuesday lunch, in the Stage Three central area
Light – Years 7-8, Friday lunch, in Laffin 3
Life – Years 9-12, Wednesday lunch, in Laffin 2.
Please contact Mr Clark if you have any questions about these groups.

Science Week Mrs Elmarie Filmalter
During Science Week students from years 7 to 10 completed the World Series Education Perfect Science competition
against 1015 schools worldwide. The vast majority of students put in a great effort resulting in Arndell coming 3rd in
the world putting us within the top 0.3 percent! In total Arndell students answered 585 471 questions, spent 3,912
hours on task and earned 377 394 points.
To demonstrate the fantastic effort put in by many of the students 104 received
credit awards, 65 bronze, 18 silver, 19 gold, and 3 elite. To get an elite award
required an individual to get more than 10 000 points, a phenomenal effort. The
three students that got the elite award were Jake James, David Lavelle, and Emma
Moore. David and Emma fought it out to the end with only 80 points out of more
than 12 000 separating them, Emma only just coming first.
The enthusiasm and engagement students displayed during this competition and
the learning that took place as a result shows the benefit that ICT approached in
teaching and learning can have and how using students innate sense of
competition in ‘gamifying’ learning can increase motivation for students to do their
school work.
Mrs Filmalter’s Year 10 Science B class and Mr Cooper’s Year 08 Science B class
have won 1st and 2nd place respectively in the Northern Sydney Science Championships that took place during the
Science World Series competition. Well done to all of these students for their efforts in the competition! Each class
has won a class party valued up to $100!
Congratulation to Arndell for coming 3rd in the world and to those students who achieved awards. Let’s see if we
can improve our international standing next year and come first!
Lost Property – Senior School Mrs Connie Stephens
ALL Secondary School clothing lost property is sent to Mears Library, and all labelled items are immediately recorded
on the Arndell Dashboard, for the notice of students and parents.
The Arndell Dashboard is the homepage on student laptops, and can be located by parents through a link in the top
right hand corner of our external website.
ALL unlabelled clothing items (except blazers) are laundered and sent to our Uniform Shop for resale, so PLEASE
LABEL EVERY UNIFORM ITEM you want returned to your child. Students are expected to check the Dashboard
regularly to see if they have anything to collect.
Because of the volume, it is not possible to email students individually, and we do not keep items indefinitely, but
to assist parents I have decided to trial placing a weekly Welfare System posting to students with labelled items to
collect. There were 13 labelled, & 21 unlabelled items, sent to us in the first week of September. Please check the
Dashboard soon to see if your child has a neutral welfare comment for lost property. If this is not possible, you can
also ring me directly on 4545 2460.
