THE IMPORTANCE OF
COMMON CORE STATE
STANDARDS
Academic standards are important
because they help ensure that all students,
no matter where they live, are prepared
for success in college and the workforce.
Standards provide an important first step
– a clear roadmap for learning for
teachers, parents, and students. Having
clearly-defined goals helps families and
teachers work together to ensure that
students succeed. They also will help your
child develop critical thinking skills that
will prepare him or her for college and
career.
SENIOR CHECKLIST FOR THIS MONTH:
Work on your ACT score. Go and visit the colleges that interest
you most. Register for the December 14th ACT test. Apply for admission on colleges’
websites. All colleges have a net price calculator on
their website that will help you determine how much it will cost you to attend based on your inclome, ACT score, your academic record, etc. Try it out!
Don’t stress about scholarships yet. Read the Scholarship Newsletter on
GHS’s website for more information. Use the Get 2 College Center in Ocean
Springs for FREE help with applying to college, ACT prep, scholarships, and more! Their website is great www.esfweblcom! You can call 875-4441 for assistance with anything. It’s worth making an appointment and driving to Ocean Springs.
Complete your senior profile.

GHS SHORELINE CHAPTER UPDATE
This past weekend, the students and sponsors of SHOREline chapters from Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi met to share their presentations with SHOREline supporters from Columbia State University, to establish relationships, and to learn from the ideas of other SHOREliners. Throughout the weekend, dedicated GHS students met many kind, hilarious, and amazing people who taught the GHS SHOREline chapter members about their own communities. GHS students found it very comforting to meet people with some of the same stories as they had themselves. The weekend meetings were held at the Gulf Park campus of The University of Southern Mississippi. SHOREline is doing great things! Please view the GHS SHOREline group’s presentation on the Gulfport High School webpage. ~Contributed by GHS SHOREliner Kameron Simpson
The Gulfport Sailors represented Gulfport Schools well this past weekend by placing in all fleets in the Junior Regatta. The photo below shows the Gulfport Sailors are they rounded their mark in their Vanguard 420 sailboats during the Jerry Ellis Regatta at the Biloxi Yacht Club.

GULFPORT HIGH MCJROTC RIFLE TEAM CONTINUES WINNING STREAK In a setting reminiscent of a Friday the 13th movie, the Gulfport MCJROTC Rifle Teeam won its third consecutive match of the season. At an outdoor range located down dirt roads in the backwoods of Pensacola, Florida, the Gulfport team proved that the only thing to fear was their extraordinary shooting abilities. Three position matches are rarely held outside, and the cool, gusting wind and light rain made conditions even more difficult. The Gulfport team was up to the challenge and finished with a national-level score of 1074. The 13 Navy JROTC teams from Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida were completely blown away. Brittany Robins for the third straight time finished with the highest individual score of 274. She also took highest in the Prone and Standing Positions. Ryan Cook finished with a 270 , and Jillian Tyler finished with a 266. Desia Tyler finished with a score of 264. The team was anxious to finish the match, flee the dark, scary woods, and get back to Gulfport for their homecoming dance.
