Many in the business community

actually realize the sky has been falling.

Here is a convoluted story line. With Lent and all of the fish fries, I was thinking of Easter. Easter made me think of chicks and then Chicken Little. Chicken Little is all about the sky falling and nobody listening. The falling sky makes me think of talent; attraction and retention. Told you it was a bit off of center.

Many in the business community actually realize the sky has been falling. In some sectors, it has become increasingly difficult to find talent and retain the talent a business has on hand. I’ve been to several summits and read a lot about the challenges we are facing and how that challenge will be worsening. It has nothing to do with unfounded stereotypes about millennials in the workplace. It has to do with, as one person put it, humans. We need people and we need to find ways to help businesses find and retain those people.

One of many elements of attracting and retaining talent is the first impressions and organizational culture. When I think back to my first job, and those of you who have seen my hair know that it was a while ago, I was just glad to get a good job and be able to stay in the state. Now there are choices, lots of choices, here and everywhere else. So, something has to give to attract and retain.

Of course, they all don’t end up in our community either. I know of one large local business where over 20% of their employees are not based in the “mothership”. Another small business hired their first employee from another state as all of the work is virtual. While that is a national trend, it is somewhat worrisome as those folks are most likely not supporting the businesses in this community or getting involved in community change. The challenge for business, though, is that they need humans and people don’t need to be in their building always to do that.

We have a lot to sell and brag about in our community. Cost of living. Four seasons with plenty to do. K-12 and post-secondary education and training. Arts and culture galore. Close proximity to major metropolitan areas. And lots more. So when a candidate bubbles to the top through their own or we recruit them, what are we selling them on when they get here?

PCBC is leading an effort in creating a community website with one entry point that shares all we have in a more simple format than having to search for everything a candidate might be interested in learning more about. Check out someplacebetter.org to see a model we are following.

When the community does need the people to be here, what sort of first impression are we giving them. I know I’ve offered personally to many businesses giving a potential employee a tour of the community. Not that it is about me, but it is about a “third-person, unbiased” view (not the company or someone trying to sell them something other than a great place to live). PCBC and Ignite are in the very beginning stages at looking at community onboarding partnerships with the business community to provide that kind of support.

Then, does your organizational

culture fit with the trends. Not everyone needs to have a beer tap in your breakroom or an adult playground in your garden area, but they do make a difference. Little things make a difference, too. One of the best way to find out if your culture works for your business is to ask the employees. If you manage expectations and let them know not every idea will be implemented, it is amazing what your co-workers will come up with for ideas. I’ve implemented some in our small shop and we have six employees.

Our Board and committee members are focused on the talent attraction and retention challenges. We are working with many partner organizations. Help us stop the sky from falling so our businesses can continue to grow!

The Mid-State Technical College District Board is delighted to announce the selection of Dr. Shelly Mondeik as the college’s sixth president. Mondeik will join the college on June 1st. She was selected from a pool of more than thirty candidates from across the United States. The college began the presidential search last fall after Dr. Sue Budjac announced she will retire in summer, 2017.

In announcing the selection, District Board Chairperson Betty Bruski Mallek noted that Mondeik is the quintessential technical college leader. “Shelly Mondeik is herself a Wisconsin technical college graduate. She started her career in the private sector. She went on to teach at the techni-cal college level and to move up through leadership to become a highly regarded vice president at neighboring Northcentral Technical College,” Mallek said. “Shelly Mondeik is a central Wisconsin person through and through and is a proven leader in the Wisconsin Technical College System.”

Mondeik has served since 2010 as Vice President for Learning and Chief Academic Officer at Northcentral Technical College, headquartered in Wausau. She holds leadership positions at

the national, state and regional level including chairing the board of the Community College Consortium for Agriculture Advancement, serving on the advisory board of the Medical College of Wisconsin, and leading the Wisconsin Technical College System’s statewide “credit for prior learning” initiative to better recog-nize the work and life experience Wisconsinites bring to college.

The Mid-State Board was impressed with Mondeik’s strong track record of building commu-nity relationships and partner-ships. She is president-elect of the Merrill Chamber of Commerce and chairs the Workforce Hub Steering Committee of the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce. “Shelly has earned a reputation as a leader who works tirelessly to ensure her college meets busi-ness, industry and community needs,” according to Mallek. “She also has great experience working with public officials at the local, state and national level,” Mallek added.

The Mid-State Board also noted Mondeik ’s commitment to balance continued progress on important college initiatives with new energy and new ideas. “We were looking for a leader who will maintain momentum on

our strategic plan and culture of accountability while leading us to exciting new accomplishments,” Mallek said.

Mondeik earned a doctorate in educational leadership at Madison’s Edgewood College. She earned master’s and bache-lor’s degrees in career and techni-cal education at UW-Stout, and an associate degree at Northcentral.

The District Board shaped the presidential search profile based in part on a series of seven forums it conducted in September, 2016, with community leaders and college faculty and staff in Wisconsin Rapids, Marshfield, Stevens Point and Adams. Don Stevens + Associates of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, assisted the college with the search.

About our Speaker: “Antartic Mike” Pierce is a professional speaker, sales trainer and adventure athlete.

In January 2006, Mike became one of nine people to have run a marathon on the Antarctic continent; 11 months later he returned to Antarctica to become the first American to complete the Antarctic Ultra Marathon, a grueling 100km (62.1 miles). Since then Mike has completed many other winter marathons in the coldest and harshest climates on earth. His stories have been featured on CNN, Sports Illustrated, Fox, ABC, CBS Early Show, ESPN, and many other national and international sources.

OK, you’re thinking: WHY? Surprisingly, it has very little to do with cold weather or sports. Rather, it’s about the disciplines necessary to be successful in difficult situations. Leaders today face the same challenges as those who first conquered Antarctica. The question is this: Are we ready?

Mike holds his B.A. from the University of Colorado, Boulder in Marketing and resides in Encinitas, CA with his wife Angela.

About the Presentation: Leading at 90 Below Zero is all about one thing: Making sure that leaders understand how to help their teams be ready to face any conditions and still thrive. Mike will illustrate from Polar history stories the importance of showcasing your companies opportunity, increasing your ability to get the best people for the job, how to lead them effectively, and conditioning and rewarding them so that they have the ability and desire to complete the expedition.

The February session of Leadership Portage County was focused on Economic Development & Infrastructure. The day began with introductions of our session leaders; Justin Adamski from The Pineries Bank, Kelly Zagrzebski from Wisconsin Public Service, and Jeff Schuler from Portage County Planning and Zoning. We were excited to be joined by these leaders who shared their insights with us throughout the day.

The first presentation was from Cade Spaulding a communication professor at UWSP. Cade shared his advice on effective conflict management. Next up we heard speeches from Tama and Amy. Tama tied her love of animals and recycling together in an

interesting way – telling us how we can support the Humane Society. Amy shared her experiences and provided tips on hiking to the summit of Mt. Whitney. We enjoy learning from our fellow

participants in class.

The day continued with small group discussions on Portage County Infrastructure. Our guests were; Joel Lemke, Public Utilities

Director for City of Stevens Point, Nathan Check, Portage County Highway Commissioner, and Alex Beyer, Portage County Solid Waste Administrator. After lunch Dan Mahoney spoke to us about municipal economic development, and shared facts on the Crossroads Commons development and how it continues to grow. Todd Kuckkahn then led an exercise in which we got to simulate a public meeting and play the roles of Municipal Administrator, Environmentalist, Corporate Executive and others.

The day concluded with Greg Wright, Executive Director of CREATE Portage County leading us through an Ideation Workshop, an exercise geared to help us

brainstorm and process through starting a business or managing a big project. The day was spent at CREATE Portage County’s IDEA Center and we enjoyed being able to spread out in the space and get comfortable. The IDEA Center is a great community asset. Looking forward to our March session at Wisconsin Public Service and the Midwest Renewable Energy Association.

HATCH is a pitch competition for new business ideas and it is exclusive to Central Wisconsin. Do you or does someone you know have a fledgling business idea they’ve always wondered about taking to the next level? Dreaming of pursuing your passion project? Apply to pitch at HATCH!

The concept is simple. Pitch ideas are not limited – any business idea goes – but your pitch should be about moving a business idea forward. Selected finalists will have the opportunity to take five minutes to pitch in front of judges and a live audience at our pitch event on April 26. Finalists have the opportunity to win $2,000, and then compete again for $10,000, all to move your business idea forward. Have I piqued your interest? Here’s where we need your help

– anyone in the state can apply, and so far the applicants are pretty much all from Milwaukee. No offense to our southeastern WI neighbors, but we want someone from Central Wisconsin to win this! Please encourage anyone you know with a business idea to apply. We know our community’s next great idea is out there, and we want to hear it.

APPLICATIONS DUE MARCH 31.
