Manifesto Key Points• Fragmentation of the research efforts• Separated market segments• Paradigm shift (transversal cooperation over diverse market

segments of many stakeholders)• We differentiate between infrastructure software and application

services ...• Open Source Policy is a valid strategy• Federation of projects ... how to converge on common solutions• Long term vision

– New languages, AAL Space as networked devices• Short term vision

– Reference architecture to standardize and integrate the resources available in AAL environment

• The problem for many companies is:– how to combine their business strategies with open source software,– how to control on the software evolution in order to save their competitive

advantage. • It is worth to remember that, historically, Open Source have positioned towards

the platforms and the infrastructural/back-end side of the software spectrum [1]

3rd Generation FLOSS organizations

• 1st generation: loosely coupled enthusiasts communities – the GNU project

• 2nd generation: strongly integrated communities of individuals– the Apache Software Foundation

• 3rd generation: foundations composed of stakeholders from industry, users and communities – the Eclipse foundation, OW2

Association Principles

16

• Technology neutral– It means that we search for the best solution– Independently of the interest of any technology provider

• Transparent– Regarding the technological solutions provided and promoted– Regarding the governance rules and strategic choices

• Open– No discrimination of person , group of persons, or companies– Clear process definition to join the association and to be nominated

for the various elective offices • Non profit

– Just the interest to create market conditions– Costs covered mainly by donation / sponsorship

AAL Forum 2010 Odense

16

Page 17: The AAL Open Association

Association (www.aaloa.org)Keep it Simple

• Federation of projects– Not only software projects (see proposed mission)

» E.g. a thematic conference with its own scientific committee could be supported by the association as project

• Simple Management – Board of Directors (OS oriented)

» The board mainly decides to accept the new initiatives (mission compliant)» No interference in the design choices of the various projects

– Advisory Board (Industry oriented)» Provide a forum for communications among the industries and the research community» advise on technical & market problems» Organized in Working Groups

17AAL Forum 2010 Odense

Page 18: The AAL Open Association

Associationother considerations

• Involve– Individuals, other associations, companies

• Diversity– Do not force monoculture (do not filter ideas)– Many projects free to organize their governance rules– Common rules will emerge by practice– Association as common space to share ideas

• Easy adaptation to new needs– Bylaws amendable to convey new players– Bylaws amendable to manage a supersized association
