1 . C L A R I T Y

• A diamond acquires different internal characteristics as a result of

the tremendous heat and pressure deep within the earth

• These are called as ‘blemishes’ and ‘inclusions’

• Depending on the nature, size, relief and position of these

characteristics a diamond’s value is assessed

• Lesser distortions improve the value of a diamond

2 . C A R A T

• Carat refers to the weight of

a diamond.

• As the carat weight of a

diamond increases so does

its rarity and therefore its

desirability and price.

• However, note that the

carat weight is independent

of a diamond’s size.

3 . C U T

• While nature controls the weight, clarity and colour of a

diamond, attaining that perfect cut lies in the hands of the

artisan

• There are three types of cut in a diamond ; The ideal cut,

premium cut and the inferior cut

4 . C O L O U R

• The ranking of a diamond starts on a scale of D and

moves through the alphabet to Z, with D being the most

colourless

• The most colourless a diamond is, the higher is its value

5 . C E R T I F I C A T I O N

• Be aware that almost all diamonds are given certification to

highlight its characteristics like the colour, carat, cut and clarity

• The three companies that are leaders in this field are :

Gemological Institute of America (GIA), American Gem Society

(AGS) and the European Gemological Laboratory (EGL)
