FROM THE PASTOR
Dear Members and Friends,
John the Baptist was called of God to prepare Israel for the coming of Jesus. In Matthew 3 we read, 1In those
days John the Baptist came, preaching in the desert of Judea 2and saying, “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is
near.” 3This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: “A voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare
the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’” (Matthew 3:1-3; NIV). His message was rejected by
many, but he never faltered, even though it led to his death.
God calls you and me to prepare people for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. We too are called to preach a
message of repentance, “for the kingdom of heaven is near.” Many people reject the message. People do not
want to think of themselves as sinners. We think of ourselves as perfect. We think that there is nothing we need
to change in our actions or the tone of voice we use. The Bible, however, paints a different picture of the human
condition. It states that we are all sinners, that each of us sometimes does or says things that we should not. It
can be very discouraging to us when we tell people that they need Jesus in their lives when they think they are
perfect and need not change. We often let the devil use the rejections to tempt us to give up. Like John the
Baptist, however, we need to persevere.
I am sure John the Baptist felt discouraged at times also. But John recognized the importance of the message he
preached, and those who were converted made it all worthwhile. The message we preach is just as important,
and the reward of seeing people converted makes it worth all our time and effort.
Don’t be discouraged! Keep up the good work!
Prayerfully yours,
Pastor Harold

Country Christmas Craft Show – Trinity’s craft shows are the largest fundraisers in the church and cannot be done without the help of many people.
1. THANK YOU to each person who helped in any way to make the show successful! Thanks to those who prayed for the show to glorify God, to those who donated food or money, and to those who volunteered throughout the building and the grounds in the week before the show and the day of the show.
2. SPECIAL THANKS go to our Trinity Youth Crusaders, leaders, and parents for all their invaluable help: cleaning the TFC building, moving tables & chairs, helping during the show with checking restrooms, trash cans, & doing other jobs as needed, and for staying after the show to sweep the floors and to move furniture back to its regular location. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
3. Additional THANKS go to each person who shared any form of publicity about the show to attract customers from far and wide! Thanks for sharing the flyers, sending emails, posting info on social media posts, and telling others about the show.
4. THANK YOU to those who supported the show with your kitchen and vendor purchases and to those who brought friends. In spite of the cold temperatures and rain earlier in the week, the show was very well attended and the lawns were OK for parking.
5. Although it is way too early to have exact figures, we hope to clear approximately $4,000 after all the bills have been paid (paper goods, foods, advertising, etc.). The general fund will receive at least 10%. The new computer in the sanctuary and related accessories are being paid for with craft show funds and will cost approximately $2,000. A new stove, additional outdoor lighting, and some new exterior doors for TFC are possible expenditures for the profits.
6. Plans are already underway for the March 21, 2015 Spring Bloom Craft Show. If you have constructive suggestions or would be willing to volunteer, please see Stacy Rosenberry or Betty B. Evelhoch. Applications and further information about Spring Bloom will be on the church website after 1/1/15.
TUMC FUNDRAISERS – Easy! Win, win! Help TUMC general fund! 1. Gift cards from Texas Roadhouse are available in $25 and $50
denominations. The cards have no expiration date and will make perfect Christmas gifts as well as purchases for your own family. Trinity will earn 10% of the gift card sales. Please share the information with your co-workers and friends! See Doris Goodhart, or put a note in her mailbox to arrange for payment and to get your gift cards.
2. Looking ahead – January 20, 2015 – Fundraiser at Texas Roadhouse in Chambersburg. TUMC general fund will receive 10%. Use your gift cards on January 20 and help TUMC get a double benefit. More details will be available closer to the January 20 date, but mark your calendars now, and start telling your family and friends.
A NOTE FROM THE SOUND COMMITTEE:
As some of you are aware, during the summer months we developed a problem with the classroom speakers in
the church building. After some testing, it was determined that the amplifier that drives those speakers was no
longer functioning properly. This amplifier was the last remaining piece of the sound system that was installed
in the building in 1984, after a lightning strike took out our original system. In an effort to keep costs down;
this amplifier, since it was still working well, was retained as part of our most recent update, more than 15 years
ago.
Since parts for older audio equipment are hard to find, the most logical thing to do was replace the amplifier.
After some quick checking, it was determined that a new amplifier could cost between $200 and $400.00.
A few years ago, a new portable sound system was donated to the Jacksonville Lions Club, leaving them with a
relatively unused amplifier which they no longer needed. Some investigation by members of our sound team
determined that this amplifier would suit our needs here at Trinity and the Lions Club was approached about
selling it to our church. At their October meeting, the Jacksonville Lions voted, unanimously, to donate the
piece to Trinity Church. It was temporarily put in place and has been functioning well. It will soon be
permanently placed in the equipment rack in the room at the rear of the sanctuary. Our board of Trustees has
sent a formal thank you letter to the Lions club but the members of the sound committee thought that the
congregation should know of this, as well.
This is just one example of cooperation between the Jacksonville Lions Club and Trinity United Methodist
Church. We should be thankful that these two fine organizations are a part of our community.

Trinity United Methodist Church Council Minutes – October 2014
The Church Council meeting was held in the Goodhart Classroom on Monday, October 20, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.
Those in attendance were:
Pastor Harold, Paul Bitner, Karen Boutcher, Dave Evelhoch, Scott Gleim, Al Grove, Janet Grove, Jenny
Harkins, Glorianne Hilsinger, Tom Holmes, Bev Rosenberry, Jack Wyrick
Tom Holmes called the meeting to order. Pastor Harold read a message from Five Practices of Cultivating
Fruitfulness by Bishop Robert Schnase, a passage on Risk Taking from Matthew 25:36 and offered an opening
prayer.
The secretary’s report from September 2014 meeting was reviewed. Glorianne Hilsinger made a motion to
accept the minutes as submitted and the motion was seconded by Bev Rosenberry. The September minutes
were approved by verbal vote.
The Proposed Spending Plan for 2015 was reviewed. Scott Gleim reported that they tried to stay with the same
dollar amounts as 2014. A motion was made by the Stewardship Committee to accept the Proposed Spending
Plan. Janet Grove seconded the motion and it was approved by verbal vote.
In Marty’s absence, Tom reported that the year to date is positive. The treasurer’s report was reviewed and
approved as presented.
Committee reports were given as follows:
STEWARDSHIP – Scott Gleim reported that the Shares of Ministry are behind but they are paying as the funds
allow. November 9th
will be Stewardship Sunday. It was reported that the General Fund received $50 from the
October event at Chili’s. Pastor Harold and Tom Holmes approved the monthly restaurant events to be
extended into 2015 and have advised Doris Goodhart. The next event is scheduled for November 18 at Wendy’s
in Shippensburg. This will be announced in the Bulletin.
TDCC –Nothing to report.
WORSHIP – Jack Wyrick reported the New Year’s Eve service will be replaced with a 9 a.m. worship service
on New Year’s Day. The following is scheduled:
October 26 – Jerry Jones Concert
November 2 – All Saints Day service
November 9 – Veteran’s Day service
November 23 – Bible Sunday – people are invited to bring their bible to Church and an extra bible that
they would like to donate. The donated bibles can be used; there is no need to purchase a bible for this
service.
VISION – Pastor Harold reported the Vision Team meeting will be held this week and that some of the changes
recommended from the survey and group meetings are being implemented. The Vision Team will be delegating
various new items to different groups. Some of the recent items are to have a special service on World
Communion Sunday. It is hoped that more music will be added at different services.
BUILDING COMMITTEE – Nothing to report.
AUDIT –Nothing to report.
TRUSTEES –Dave reported that the screen in the Sanctuary malfunctioned on Sunday and it is an electrical
issue. This will be fixed this week. Tom said he talked with Jim Connors and the Trustees are still looking for
help with the snow plowing for the winter. Jim did contact a company but they were reluctant to give a price
and said it all depends on how much snowfall we get. Tom asked that everyone keep looking for other options
and let the Council know if they have any quotes/prices.
OUTREACH – Glorianne said the next meal for My Brother’s Table is scheduled for November 2nd.
October
visits with shut-ins are scheduled next week.
YOUTH –Pastor Harold reported the Youth went to a corn maze and Corrie said that everyone had a good time.
FOOD BANK – Pastor Harold said the Harvest Blessing Service is schedule for November 16th
Collections
will be taken in November. Zumba is going to collect for the Food Bank. Gayle Christman and the Youth will
participate in a community collection on November 15th
SHUT-INS –Reported by Glorianne under Outreach.
UMW - Janet reported that the UMW will be preparing Christmas Holiday Bags for South Mountain
Restoration Center at the November meeting. There is a list of items that are needed posted in the Goodhart
Room if anyone would like to donate anything. The UMW is adding hats and scarves to the holiday bags this
year. Friday evening, December 12 is the date for the Christmas Party hosted by UMW and The Lion’s Club.
Janet will take care of ordering the Poinsettias for Christmas and Mary Wadel will assist.
SCOUTING – Pastor Harold reported that there are currently five cub scouts and the Chapter will be renewed
for 2015. These scouts will be moving up to Boy Scouts and the group is not big enough to start a Boy Scout
group. These youth will go out to other units in the area and next year there will not be a Boy Scout Group at
Trinity. Pastor Harold and Gayle Christman will be sorting the scouting materials and cleaning out the closet,
allowing this space to be available for other uses.
OLD BUSINESS – Tom inquired about the progress of the new computer system. Dave said there are 4
options but Dave did not have any other information. Tom advised that Paul is waiting for the approval of funds
from the Craft Show and then Paul will be able to purchase the needed equipment. Dave will ask Craft Show
Committee about the funds.
NEW BUSINESS:
Dave said the Craft Show needs help.
The Church Conference questionnaire was reviewed and updates were made. The Pastor’s report was reviewed
including a list of people who no longer are active in the Church. The people on the list will be visited either in
person or via telephone to advise them they may be removed from the Church Rolls. Depending on responses,
these names will go to Year 2 to be moved. Pastor Harold may ask Church Members to assist in this outreach.
The Nominations Report for 2015 was reviewed and updated. A motion was made by Jenny Harkins to accept
the Amended Nominations Report; the motion was seconded by Janet Grove to submit the Report to the Charge
Conference. The Charge Conference will be held on October 26 at Messiah at 6:30 p.m.
Tom reminded everyone that “Trunk or Treat” event is scheduled for Thursday, October 30th
from 6 to 8 p.m.
There are approximately 6 cars and 1 tractor signed up for this event. Tom will be manning a table at the
Fellowship Center with cider and cookies. Tom will be setting up his table and the milk jugs to be used for
lighting on Wednesday, October 29th
at 6 p.m. if anyone wants to help. Tom shared the flyer which Glorianne
prepared. The flyer will be placed in the mailboxes in the Day Care Center. Dave said he picked up candy and
trinkets from Mission Central which can be used by anyone for this event.
Pastor Harold told the group that he recently attended a Security meeting and he will share this information at
the next Trustee’s meeting. Pastor Harold said it was very informative meeting.
Glorianne suggested that Trinity plan a community event to give local community people a chance to get to
know each other. Glorianne suggested possibly a New Year’s Eve event. Pastor Harold said at a previous
Church, they held a similar event and it was very well attended. This particular event was a Block Party with
games, antique cars. It was suggested that everyone think about this and if we want to plan something it needs
be in advance so there is time to advertise.
Pastor Harold closed the meeting with a prayer.
The next Council meeting will be November 17th
at 7 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Jenny Harkins
Trinity UMC, Church Council Secretary
with appreciation to everyone for their get-well wishes, cards and words of
encouragement.

Your help is needed! Each person --- that means Y-O-U! --- is needed to make Trinity the best
it can be for doing God’s work in our corner of the world. Here are some ways you can help grow God’s kingdom here in Walnut Bottom: … pray daily for our church and its members … support TUMC with your attendance and active participation … invite unchurched people in your social circle to come to TUMC … react positively with encouragement toward other members in our church family … teach, assist, attend Sunday school classes … provide nursery duty … serve as a liturgist … serve on the sound desk … present children’s sermons … participate in the prayer shawl ministry … help Trinity’s Clothing Closet … serve at My Brother’s Table … serve on any number of committees … sing in Trinity’s choirs … Just ask!
Children are also needed to serve as acolytes.
Have other suggestions to make Trinity a better church? Talk to Pastor Harold, Vision Team members, Tom Holmes, or Jim Conner with your ideas and offers to help.

The most important part about CHRISTmas is the first six letters!
USING TFC OR PAVILION? It is important that your request to use TFC or the pavilion is turned in ASAP in writing.
This applies to EACH & EVERY CHURCH GROUP
AND for PERSONAL RENTALS.
Also, if your group wants to use TFC paper goods, please make your needs known in advance.
Written requests for reservations should be turned in to the church office or to
Dave Evelhoch as soon as possible to avoid scheduling conflicts & also to arrange for HVAC needs.
Any group expecting to use TFC paper goods should let Dave know in plenty of time. Let him know exactly what is needed and then please make a contribution to the Building Fund for such goods.
Do NOT just assume that the facilities will be available OR that the supplies will just be on hand. ***************************************
FRIENDSHIP SUPPER DECEMBER 12
Members of the Jacksonville Lions Club and Trinity’s United Methodist Women have sponsored a couple of Friendship Suppers for residents of a local group home and others. The next Friendship Supper is scheduled for Friday evening, December 12 at Trinity Fellowship Center. Any volunteers who would like to help in any way, feel free to contact Glorianne Hilsinger at 530-4978 or [email protected].

NEW COMPUTER IN SANCTUARY Are you aware that there is a new computer in the sanctuary for use during worship services? Trinity’s Craft Show proceeds paid the approximately $1,500 cost. Thanks to Paul Bigham for his computer/technology knowledge in
helping to choose the computer and making the purchase.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Many thanks go out to each person who helped in any way with the 16th annual Country Christmas Craft Show on Saturday, November 8, 2014.
Thank you to those who prayed that the craft show would glorify God, to those who donated food or money, and, most of all, to those who donated their time!
Special thanks go out to the Trinity Youth Crusaders, leaders, and their parents for their invaluable help --- cleaning the TFC building, moving tables and chairs, and helping during the show with monitoring restrooms, trash cans, and other needed jobs, and for staying at the end to clean and to help move furniture back to its regular places!
Thank you to each person who shared posters, emails, and social media posts, and to those who told friends about the show.
Thank you to those who attended and helped support our kitchen sales and the crafts vendors. Food sales were phenomenal with very few leftovers!
In spite of the chilly day, we were blessed with sunshine, and the earlier rains did not affect our parking situation.
Attendance for the day was terrific! Comments were made that the busy parking attendants were running out of parking spaces!
Plans to make some changes for the March 21 Spring Bloom Craft Show are already in the works. If you have some constructive suggestions or would be willing to help, please see Betty B. Evelhoch or Stacy Rosenberry.
It is way too early to give profit figures yet because most bills have not been received from the businesses for advertising, paper goods, food purchases, and other outstanding bills. However, we hope to clear approximately $4,000 after the bills have been paid. Once the total is figured, the general fund will receive at least ten per cent and possible purchases for TFC include a new stove for the kitchen, some needed kitchen fixtures, additional outdoor lighting, tables, and replacing some exterior doors. There may also be additional costs for the extras for the new computer that was bought with craft show funds, approximately $1,500 so far. *************************************************

RETIREMENT and THANK YOU TO DAVE! Retirement! As of December 31, 2014, David Evelhoch will no longer be the maintenance/repair person or HVAC person for TUMC, TFC, or the parsonage. Also, he will not be plowing or shoveling snow on any church property this winter. He is retiring from these time-consuming positions!
Many thanks go to Dave for being “on call” 24/7 for emergencies and for repairs for many years, but especially since he was hired in May, 2000 as custodian/maintenance for TFC and then changed to maintenance years later when Jack Wyrick became custodian for both buildings.
Dave has saved TUMC hundreds of dollars in fixing things, preventing many costly service calls, and just taking care of countless other things that needed to be done. He also coordinated and helped with routine inspections as needed for the HVAC, security system, fire extinguishers, and other services.
Much of his work was behind the scenes such as shoveling and plowing snow at 3 AM so day care or the church could open on time, reprogramming the temperature in each building as needed, changing light bulbs, taking care of recycling, and even removing groundhogs from the parsonage property! If something needed to be done, Dave was the one who usually got the calls at any hour.
THANK YOU to Dave
for his heartfelt dedication
in helping make Trinity
the best it can be.
At this time, no one has been hired to do the maintenance and repairs that will be needed.

HOPEFUL SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS WELCOMES YOU!
If you do not have a Sunday school class, you are invited to join the Hopeful Sunday School class in TFC at 9 AM each Sunday. Lots of interaction and lively discussions are enjoyed in the Bible-based lessons. Come for spiritual nourishment as well as physical; the coffee pot is always ready (or tea or hot chocolate).
No Bible? No problem! We have plenty available for your use in the class.
To find the classroom, walk in the TFC entrance closer to the church building, go up the steps, and enter the first room on your right.
Please join us! We welcome new class members!
Also … The class is sponsoring four children in the Warm the Children program @ $80 per child. Anyone who
would like to make a contribution to our efforts can contact Dave Evelhoch.
The class also plans to send a donation to the UMC Children’s Home in Mechanicsburg, but an amount has not been decided at this point.
