Founded in 1990, the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (NOFAS) is the leading voice and resource for the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) community. It is the only international, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization solely dedicated to FASD primary prevention, advocacy and support.

FASDFASD describes the range of effects - physical, mental, behavioral, and developmental disabilities with lifelong implications - that can result from prenatal exposure to alcohol. To achieve a global community free of alcohol-exposed pregnancies, discrimination and stigma, NOFAS operates high-quality, high-impact programs that increase public awareness, mobilize grassroots action, and support services to families, caregivers and individuals living with FASD.

Our accomplishments include: creating a network of 45 affiliate member organizations in United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia; establishing the Circle of Hope support group for birth mothers; developing the first FASD curriculum for medical and allied health students; helping to write and enact federal legislation and policies; advocating to include FASD in the World Health Organization Guidelines for Substance Abusing Pregnant Women and the most recent Diagnostic and Statistical Manual on Mental Disorders (DSM-5).

Since 2014, NOFAS has partnered with the EUFASD Alliance and EUCARE to launch an international FASD awareness campaign and the “Too Young to Drink” Campaign linking 50 organizations in more than 30 countries to prevent FASD. In 2015, NOFAS and the National Indian Health Board (NIHB) initiatedinitiated the NOFAS-NIHB Native American FASD Collaborative to address and eliminate FASD among American Indians and Alaska Natives and improve outcomes for children and adults living with the consequences of prenatal alcohol exposure.
