BEACH LIFE

Photo: jdujic

Nude bathing is only legal on a very few beaches in Greece and it is considered oensive to the traditionalGreeks. It is also very bad etiquette to swim or sunbathewithin sight of a church and there are several churchesaround the Greek coastline. Topless sunbathing is legalnationwide but there are several areas which have adoptedtheir own policy and opted out of this liberal approach byposting signs which should not be ignored.

The police rarely hand out nes but you can end up with three days in jail if you ignore the rst warning. The islandis full of lovely beaches and especially Myrtiotissa nearCorfu, Glyfada and Pelekas on the west coast are worth avisit. There are also plenty of secluded beaches on thewest coast with is easiest reached by a water-taxi or byone of the small day-tripper boats for a fee.

SHOPPING

Corfu oers a big variety of shops. Down the cobbled streets and alleyways you can nd everything from thesmall gift and souvenir shop to the boutique with exclusiveItalian designer clothes. There are many interesting shopsin between, but the best deal can be made on leathergoods, jewellery, gold, silver and fur coats. However, if youare going to buy jewellery it is important that you use areputable jeweller. The area around Ionian Sea is famousfor its ceramic work and there are plenty of opportunitiesto see that on display in the shop windows around town.Naturally, it is also being sold in most of the souvenirshops around town.

Probably the most unusual and the most fascinating is theamount of handwoven carpets, tablecloths, napkins, skirtsand blouses of lace and cotton which are available inCorfu town. Heavy white stitched sweaters, which aremade on the Aegean Island, are also very popular amongtourists. Other typical Greek things to bring home could bethe skewers for souvlaki, and also the Greek pastries arevery tasty. There are usually bargains to be found if youare willing to negotiate, and the prices tend to fall a littlewhen the tourist season is about to end.
