M I S S I O N S T A T E M E N T St. George Parish in Waimanalo is a Community of many diverse people joined together to proclaim God’s Word in Holy Scripture by celebrating the Liturgy and building a Faith Community. Uniquely embraced by the majestic Koolau and rolling seas we strive to be a Welcoming Parish and commit ourselves to serve the people of God through Outreach, Unity and Renewal.
For the next five Sundays, our gospel will be taken from the sixth chapter of the gospel according to John. This chapter begins with the miracles of loaves and fishes, and contains Jesus’ great sermon on the bread of life. The theme of these Sundays will be that we must renew our lives in Christ Who is the Bread of Life.
TODAY’S READINGS
1st Reading: 2 Kings 4: 42-44 - The setting of today’s Old Testament reading is a famine during the time of Elisha, the prophet, eight centuries before Christ. It had not rained for years. Elisha works a miracle to feed the people. God will always provide for the person of faith.
2nd Reading: Ephesians 4: 1-6 - Our second reading is St. Paul’s great call to unity. Unity and charity in the Body of Christ are the primary effects of Holy Eucharist. Let us pray that we will have the unity which Paul describes today.
Gospel: John 6: 1-15 - Each of the four gospels tells of the miraculous multiplication of loaves and fishes. But John’s gospel uses this miracle as an introduction to his teaching on the Eucharist. Christ feeds us with the bread of life, which is His own Body. He expects that from one bread, His Body, we will become one people united in faith, hope and love.

Today’s Reflection: Abundant Life From Jesus My Irish aunt’s motto was, “If there aren’t leftovers, somebody went away hungry.” The motto is shared by aunts, mothers, and grandmothers in nearly every culture. During holidays, our table was a groaning board of food prepared by my mother and aunt, brought by other family members, and shared with everyone. On the many occasions when we had more guests than we realized, the whispered command, “FHB,” would make its way through our house. The initials stood for “Family, Hold Back” because our first duty was to make sure that our guests had
enough to eat, and there were always peanut butter sandwiches and apples for us later. Whenever I think of the miracle of the loaves and fishes, I think about holidays at our house. Impossibly, it seemed, everyone had more than enough to eat. There were always leftovers. But Jesus started with far less than we did. The five barley loaves and two fish were a meager beginning, food of the poor. That food became abundant in Jesus’ hands. It wasn’t the first miraculous multiplication. The Old Testament prophets, Elijah and Elisha, both multiplied scarce resources, but not for so many. Jesus outdoes them all. It is John’s way of saying that Jesus isn’t just another prophet. He is more powerful than any who came before him. As we will hear in the coming weeks, he is life itself. This is John’s eucharistic story. The life that Jesus brings is abundant—we will all be satisfied. Think about that when you next receive Communion. + By Mary Katharine Deeley

"Human life is sacred because from its beginning it involves the creative action of God and it remains for ever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is
its sole end. God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can under any
circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being.”

Food for Thought
“The miracle of feeding the 5000 reveals the heart of God, who cares about our every need. God also expects us to come to the aid of one
another, and to share what little we have.”
“The dignity of the human person is rooted in his creation in the image and likeness of God.”
