Alpha Kappa Omega Standards Committee Meeting

October 18, 2011

Call to Order • 6:15 p.m. at the home of Soror Marianne Walker.

Members Present:

LaShane Eaglin, Sherry Cole, Felicia Ransfer, Erica Smith, Shirley Alfred Johnson, Tamara Cubit and Marianne Walker

Meeting Purpose: The Standards Committee met to discuss the required annual Chapter Self Assessment. The evaluation will be sent to chapters in the very near future and must be completed and returned to Alpha Kappa Alpha Corporate Office by December 31, 2011. If, Soror Cubit receives the 2011 Evaluation forms in the next few weeks we will plan to administer the survey at the November meeting, otherwise, it must be completed at the December meeting. The committee discussed ways of conveying the importance of the Chapter Self Assessment to our chapter members. Corporate office expects chapters to have input from at least 50% of their total membership on this instrument. Alpha Kappa Omega has failed to meet this goal. Suggestions to bring the chapter into compliance with the corporate goal include:

• Conducting the survey electronically- it was decided that due to the number of sorors who have yet to register on the chapter’s website, and who do not have access to email this may not be feasible. We will try to begin phasing electronic surveys in over the coming year.

• The use of an alternative form of the Chapter Self Assessment was suggested. This form would be distributed mid-year as a means of self-evaluation. The committee was reminded that we must use the official document so that we will remain in compliance with the international bylaws.

• Copying the survey on a color of paper other than white, so that it stands out. • Informing the body that due to the lack of sufficient participation, Alpha Kappa Omega was not

given “recognized” status by the corporate office even though all other criteria were met.

The committee also discussed the SOROR CODE OF ETHICS. This document must be signed by all officers who are elected in the upcoming election. Soror Cubit suggested we review this document with all declared candidates prior to the election. Other suggestions included:

• Placing an “Ethics” highlight in the monthly newsletter. • Planning to have a session on ethics at the annual Chapter Retreat • Ethics workshop for executive board is being planned. • Plan to review the Soror Code of Ethics during a Rededication type setting. • Encourage all chapter members to sign the code of ethics.

Committee Members also briefly discussed corporate requirements for storage of the Annual Survey and Soror Code of Ethics. The hardcopy the documents must be maintained for seven years under the current bylaws. Respectfully Submitted, Soror Shirley Alfred Johnson

EYL ANNOUNCEMENT November 19, 2012

EMERGING YOUNG LEADERS NEED MENTORING AND TUTORING

The most important thing a mentor can do is to listen and to lead by example. She isn't there to judge, punish or condemn. And as important as her role becomes, it is a temporary one.

Adolescence is the time when children pull away from parents to start forming their own identities. It is also a time when children need essential values, trusting relationships, and strong guidance more than ever, to ensure that they make good life choices and stand strong. Adolescent girls need adult women in their lives, in addition to their mothers.

“Off-the-shelf,” one-size-fits-all mentoring formulas won’t deliver. Each girl needs and wants a mentor. The ten mentors that signed up on the EYL List cannot serve as a mentor to 53 girls. One-on-one is the best matching relationship. We also need tutors for math and reading.

Why I Want To Be an Emerging Young Leader is the title of their essay. Some of the essay writers expressed their feelings about what they expected to learn from us. How much they could gain including help we could give them by our position as role models and the fact that we are educated and can help them with reading and math.

Thank you so much.

Margie Taylor, Chairman of EYL

Name of Committee: Social Justice& Human Rights Date: 10/17/2011 Chairperson: Sahira J Abdool Co-Chairperson: Nicole Montgomery Time: 8:00pm Place: Power Center Number of Committee Members Present: 13 Members in Attendance: 13 Goals: To bring awareness and educate our membership on the four program categories:

• Domestic Violence

• Youth Aging Out of Foster Care

• Working with Children with Incarcerated Parents

• Human Trafficking

Objectives: Through our membership awareness we can develop programs, participate in projects and initiatives in collaboration with the existing community and social service organizations, to help address these four significant categories. Ultimately our objective is to help reduce the growing numbers being impacted in Houston and Harris County areas. Important issues addressed were: 1. Wrap Up of the Serita Jakes Book Signing Event- on October 14, 2011 the Serita Jakes Book Signing Event was held at

the African American Library at the Gregory School. The event kicked off with a special and intimate program for Sorors and special guests where Soror Jakes gave a “keep it real” sincere and often humorous layout for her book; The Crossing. In honor of Domestic Violence month, Soror Jakes drove home the reality of how domestic violence has infiltrated our society and has created a cycle of violence that we all must be aware of to detect, address and prevent from ruining our families. The special program was attended by approximately 55 guests and the program also featured the chapter’s contribution of used cell phones to the Houston’s Women’s Shelter. The chapter collected over 40 used cell phones to go to assist victims of domestic violence. Afterward we held a reception prior to the book signing, where Sorors were able to meet, greet and take photos with Soror Serita Jakes. The book signing was well received and approximately 75 attendees from the community waited in line to meet and receive their personal book signing. The experience of this evening and for the cause of domestic violence was priceless. A very special thank you to Soror Tamara Cubit and Soror Marianne Walker for their guidance and support, to our chapter book club and all of the Sorors who volunteered or participated in helping to decorate or host at the event and to Soror Jo-Carolyn Goode for helping to promote the event, we extend our sisterly appreciation for the overwhelming support to make this event a success.

2. Update on the Angel Tree Project was given by Co-Chairman; Nicole Montgomery who is helping to lead the effort for the SJHR Committee and working closely with the December Service Project Committee and volunteers to ensure that this year’s event is another big success. This year the focus is to provide gifts and support to 75-100 children from the Change Happens organization as a recommendation. This project is to focus on assisting Children of Incarcerated Parents, Children in Foster Care or Youth transitioning out of Foster Care Programs. The December 17, 2011 Membership Meeting is the proposed date for the event and details will be presented by Co-Chairman Nicole Montgomery at the November Membership Meeting.

Our next Meeting is November 21st @ 8:00 p.m. at the Power Center
