Certificate vs Credential*
• Certificate: a document attesting to the truth of certain stated facts
• Credential: an attestation of qualification, competence, or authority issued to an individual by a third party with a relevant de jure or de facto authority or assumed competence to do so

CMPP Candidacy, Exam Preparation, and Application
Eligibility Criteria: Two Options
• Option A– Bachelors degree from an accredited college/university, or an
equivalent educational degree and 2 years (equivalent 4,000 hours) of active, verifiable employment predominately involving strategic publication plan development, tactical publication plan development, and/or publication plan implementation
• Option B– High school diploma, or an equivalent completed educational course
of study, and 10,000 hours of active, verifiable employment predominately involving strategic publication plan development, tactical publication plan development, and/or publication plan implementation
• All qualifying work includes employment with medical publication planning or communications agencies; pharmaceutical companies; biotechnology or device companies; and/or medical publishing firms
Exam Description
• 150-question computer-based multiple-choice exam
• Tests general knowledge across all relevant areas of medical publication planning and execution with a mix of information and application of experience

Practical Considerations
Exam Process
• Candidate submits application and candidate agreement and release (http://www.ismpp.org/in_appl.html)
• Eligibility confirmed (supplemental information may be requested)
• Notice to schedule sent
• Schedule date and time confirmed; admission “ticket” and information provided
• Timing: within 2 weeks of application for confirmation of eligibility
• Notice to schedule 2-4 weeks prior to exam window
Exam Schedule and Fees
• Two month-long exam windows each year
• Q1– March 1-31
– Application deadline: February 15
• Q3 – September 1-30
– Application deadline: August 15
• Applications may be submitted at any time for the next exam window
• Examination fees– ISMPP member – USD $495
– Non-member – USD $690
Testing Centers
• Exam is administered by Professional Testing, Inc through a partnership with Pearson VUE
• Pearson VUE operates the testing centers worldwide
• A full list of testing centers made available once you receive your notice to schedule
• Specific days and times are provided
• Confirmation email with details sent after you schedule
• You must remember to bring your “admission ticket” to the exam
At the Exam Site
• You take the exam on a computer provided at the testing site
• You can review the computer testing “experience” at http://pearsonvue.com/athena/
• You can also review the tutorial during the first 15 minutes of your exam
• Exam duration: 3 hours inclusive
What to Take to the Exam
• A printed copy of your confirmation notice (secured when you schedule or pre-book your exam time)
• Proof of identification; must match name on application
• You must arrive at least 15 mins in advance of your scheduled test time (and not more than 30 mins late)
• No materials or books, etc are allowed in or out of the room
• Cell phones are not allowed in the room
• A full list of prohibited items are listed in the candidate handbook and storage is provided
CMPP Exam Results
Exam Grading
• Exam graded as pass or fail– No score notification
– Other notations: eg, no show
• Note, the passing grade has been set based on what a candidate who meets eligibility criteria is expected to know

• Back to the Basics– Purpose of exam is to establish minimum proficiency as a publication
professional
– Overall pass rate is expected to be high; exam open to professionals with requisite experience only
• Exam not designed or scored to make comparisons among candidates
– Examinee scoring 85% is not more proficient than an examinee scoring 80%
• Exam designed to produce discrete, not continuous results Pass: Candidate possesses minimum proficiency
Fail: Candidate does not possess minimum proficiency

Recertification
CMPP Recertification Overview
• CMPP recertification represents a process to ensure maintenance of continued competence in the field of medical publications
• ISMPP requires that CMPPs recertify every 5 years– CMPP credential valid for 5 years following date awarded
(expiration date appears on certificate & wallet card)
• Certificant responsibilities while holding credential– Maintain a level of competency in field
– Comply with ISMPP Code of Ethics
– Fulfill recertification requirements
Recertification Methods
Choice of 1 of 2 methods1. Achieve a passing score on the CMPP Certification
Examination not more than 1 year prior to certification expiration
2. Fulfill CMPP recertification requirements via accrual of the requisite number of credit hours over the 5-year period following certification
Recertification Requirements
• CMPP in good standing, following all requirements as noted in handbook
• Pass the most recent CMPP Certification Examination OR complete the requisite number of credit hours of approved continuing education
• Recertification fees and processes to be further delineated

• Recertification Handbook is currently being finalized
• Details regarding credit accrual, types of activities that qualify for credit, submitting yearly activity applications will be provided in the Handbook
• Handbook available by 1Q2011
