• Multiple community requests for pedestrian safety improvements along 188th St between Horace Harding Expressway and 73rd Ave
• Assemblywoman Rozic supported the study of the area and installation of safety improvements
• In February 2016, Assemblywoman Rozic, Council Member Grodenchik, CB8, and NYC DOT conducted a community walk-through along 188th St
• The 64th Ave circle is a busy commercial area with high pedestrian volumes

PROJECT UPDATE

• April 2018- Signalization of traffic circle at 188th St and 64th Ave and improvements to the intersection of 188th St and 73rd Ave were presented to and approved by CB 8
• Fall 2018- Intersection improvements were implemented at 188th St and 73rdAve
• Summer 2019- Parking spaces were added on 64th Ave east of 188th St
• 2019- Implementation of traffic signals at 188th St and 64th Ave was delayed to due to traffic modeling concerns that needed to be worked out internally at NYC DOT
• 2020- Implementation was further delayed due to COVID-19 restrictions and capacity issues

• ~100 pedestrians in the peak hour at uncontrolled crossings at the circle
• Existing midblock uncontrolled crosswalk between 64th Ave and Horace Harding Expressway
• Missing crosswalk at pedestrian desire line

Proposed- presented April 2018• Signalize all legs of circle
• Relocate midblock uncontrolled crosswalk south to new signal
• Expand north, south, and east median tips in concrete and construct pedestrian island on the west leg
• Install two standard lanes inside the circle and two standard lanes on 188thSt approaching the circle in both directions
Proposal Update- for traffic operations• 3 lanes will need to be installed on
northeast section which will require the north curb of circle to be modified to fit

• Section of circle to be removed is mainly gravel edging, but one bush will need to be removed
