7 th June 2013 Dear Parents, Year 3 Visit to Cardiff Synagogue Year 3 had the opportunity to visit the Reform Synagogue on Tuesday to help piece together the religious practices of Judaism. During the year we have linked the stories from the Torah with our Creative Curriculum topics. We have learnt of the seafaring adventures of Noah and of Jonah and the Whale. During our visit we met the Rabbi's wife and were guided through the traditions and customs relating to the Synagogue. We were offered a kippah to wear and some girls wore prayer shawls too. We were all given the chance to read the Torah scrolls and to ask a myriad of questions. We were delighted with the warm welcome we received by the guides at the Synagogue and would like to thank the parents who were able to accompany us on our trip. Year 3 History Play Year 5 girls were plunged back in time to the Blitz, when a visiting theatre company came to Howell's this week as part of this term's World War II topic. We watched a gripping theatre performance about a family during the war, before taking part in a workshop where the girls learned to empathise with characters by 'hot seating' and by creating ' freeze frames' of different situations during WWII. It was a wonderful experience for everyone involved and the theatre group was amazed by the girls' knowledge about the period. Year 5 Visitor Everyone in Year 5 can see things much more clearly now thanks to an exciting visit from Amani's dad, who is a busy eye surgeon. He explained the complex way our eyes interpret light and send messages to our brains to enable us to see the world around us. Using diagrams, little games and visual tests, he encouraged the girls to discover how they perceive depth and how their eyes move in unison. After lots of questions about his work, Dr Muhtaseb explained that one of the most rewarding parts of his job was performing cataract operations on elderly blind people, in small villages in developing countries, because after a short, simple operation they can see! It was a fascinating way to bring our science topic of 'light' to life! Sailing Taster Sessions at Cardiff Bay Yacht Club Two members of Cardiff Bay Yacht Club visited school this morning (with a boat!) to talk about the sailing taster sessions they are offering. This offer has now been extended to any girls in Years 3 to 6 and the cost is £25 per child. All the proceeds will go to the ‘Pitch In’ Astro Turf Fund. The first session will now take place on Thursday 13 th June from 6pm to 8pm and if there is enough interest, a second taster session will run on Monday 17 th June. Email [email protected] to reserve a place on a first come first serve basis. Transport to and from the venue is not provided.

Late Arrival to School

A number of girls are regularly arriving late to school which disrupts the first lesson of the day. The morning bell rings at 8.35am (for girls in Years 3 to 6) and 8.45am (for girls in Reception to Year 2). All girls should be in the relevant playgrounds by these times although we do appreciate that there may be a valid reason for the occasional late arrival. Thank you for your support.
