25 th September 2015 Dear Parents Staff News Mrs Cheryl Cisowski is leaving us for pastures new on Tuesday of next week. Mrs Cisowski has been a member of our After School Care team for a number of years and we wish her well. Thank you Mrs Cisowski for everything you have done. Howell’s Crescent Apologies for the disruption the closure of the Howell’s School lane entrance from Howell’s Crescent is causing to some of our parents during the building works. Please note there are no plans for the entrance lane to be permanently closed. Into The Woods Year 1 went on an exciting trip to Forest Fawr on Tuesday 22nd September to explore the woods. The girls followed the sculpture trail through the woods, tried to catch falling leaves, identified leaves and seeds, identified animal prints and explored woodland dens. The girls also had the opportunity to record their experiences through the ‘easy speak’ microphones and they thoroughly enjoyed interviewing each other and explaining what they could see, hear, smell and touch. The girls had a wonderful, muddy morning out of school and they would like to thank the mums that accompanied them on the trip for all their help.

  • Nursery News We have been busy this week learning about different types of food. We have used the interactive white board to sort items into healthy and unhealthy foods as well as using our circle thinking map to help sort the foods. This led to lots of discussions about our trips to the dentist and the importance of brushing our teeth every day. We made healthy fruity kebabs in cookery. In Forest School, we collected lots of autumn leaves for our hats. At the beginning of our search we thought we would only find brown leaves and we were amazed at the different varieties and also the array of colours - red, yellow, orange and brown, an autumn rainbow. We have been learning our new sound 'm' and using our editors glasses to help self and peer assess our work. We've given each other tips on how to write 'm'. We met Fred Frog who only speaks using Fred talk and he has been helping us to blend and segment words such as mat, mum, mud. A big thank you to Meriam's mum for coming in to share their celebration of Eid with us. We had lots of fun dressing up and tasting the delicious dried fruits during our snack time.

LATCH Fundraiser In assembly today we welcomed Mr Lyn Howell a Trustee from the charity LATCH. After finally adding all the pennies together we raised an amazing £3,000.00. LATCH is a Welsh children's cancer charity based at the Heath Hospital. It does an amazing amount of work both in research and also in supporting families who are going through a very difficult time. The money we have all raised goes straight back into the charity absolutely every penny you raised is going straight to heart of LATCH.

  • Hold onto your hats - the girls in Reception have been on an adventure! As part of our topic 'Moving Along', the girls in Reception went on a very special journey. When we came in after lunch Miss Davies handed us all a ticket. It was a boarding pass! It was for flight REC2015 and was taking off from our school hall. We all hurried down to the hall with our passports (which we made in class) and there we were greeted by flight attendant Mrs Praed. She looked very different! We had to look at our tickets to check our row and seat numbers and then climb aboard. We listened to all the safety instructions and then we were off. Miss Davies turned into a pilot and started the engine. We climbed high into the sky and flew through the clouds. We had a bird’s eye view of the world below us. As we were flying we had refreshments served from a trolley by Mrs Praed and Miss Davies. We finally landed in Paris and, of course, had to visit Disneyland. After watching all the characters on the big screen we climbed back on board and flew back to school. As we were about to disembark, Mrs Praed noticed there was a problem with the steps, they were broken. We had to use the emergency chute! Luckily we were all safe and back just in time for 3.15pm. Thank you to Mrs Praed for taking such good care of us, and to Miss Davies for her wonderful flying skills. It was just another busy day in Howell's Junior School!!

German and Latin Clubs Every Tuesday after school, there are two language clubs available to the girls run by our own College Students, who are completing their Foreign Language Leader Award. We are trying to boost the uptake for Latin and German and both clubs will now be available to Year 4 as well. Complimentary After School Care is available for 30 minutes until the clubs start.

    Latin - Tuesday 3.45pm to 4.15pm Years 4, 5 and 6 German – Tuesday 3.45pm to 4.15pm Years 2, 3, and 4

Newspaper Club There are a significant number of girls who wish to come to Newspaper Club but are unable to on a Wednesday after school due to their involvement in other clubs. We have been looking for alternative time slots and the session that enables the largest number of girls to attend is a Thursday lunchtime. Therefore, from next week (week commencing 28th September 2015) there will be no club on the Wednesday after school and we will meet the newspaper team on Thursday in Miss Kenyon’s classroom after they have eaten lunch. Many thanks for your understanding,

    Miss Kenyon & Miss Griffiths
