Hello all~~Whoa....what is that I see in the not-so-far distance? Is it? Can it be?

YES! SPRING is just around the bend....Oh,

FINALLY!

Between Snow Days and a long weekend for President's Day, February chugged along and a we filled our 15 afternoons with visits from YOGA (on the 10th and the 20th) BRIKS 4 KIDZ (also on the 10th) and CHEF STANLEY (on the 18th). We even met "Mrs. Stanley", a

special treat.

In February, we also finger-painted (much fun!) and continued to craft, sew, crochet, play games and especially complete our Valentines to bring home to our families.(Red and pink paper hearts, white doilies, crayons, scissors, glitter, glue, yarn, galore!) Most children took home a cellophane baggie of goodies they made~~ along with a a puzzle, coloring, word search fun packet to complete with family, at home.(And Conversation Hearts; thank you

Miss Maritza!)

Miss Jeanine and Miss Lauren are teaching the students to make needlepoint bookmarks and

they are very beautiful and colorful.

Misses Vicky, Gilda and Linda are always busy, between Homework proctoring in the Library;

dropping off and picking up from Scouts, and other after-school activities, Attendance, manning the Gym (and bathroom runs), over-seeing Monthly First aid Inventory and Snack Inventory. They are truly "Jill's-of-all trades". Everyone does their part! Everyone is so appreciated. We have been looking at Winter Birds and some children have followed a "Reading Rocket" Guide with bird crafts and activities enclosed. Miss Anita manned a "Make a Bird Feeder" Science table and the children rolled big pine cones in suet and bird feed to string onto a tree branch outside their window and watch for "who" comes by for a nibble! A Nature activity at its "hands-on"

best.

Chinese New Year is the longest and most important celebration in the Chinese calen-dar. The Chinese year 4713 begins on Feb. 19, 2015. It is the YEAR OF THE SHEEP (although some say Ram or Goat). To cele-brate, we incorporated our Passport Unit and learned much about China's geography, food, people, customs, beliefs, etc. Our (portable) cork Bulletin Board displayed "Gung Hay Fot Choy 4713"; Sheep; descrip-tions of the Chinese Zodiac its meaning-- and a beautiful red calendar donated by Panda Garden. Our children knew a lot of information which they happily and proudly

shared~~always a delight.

They really marveled at the fact the Great Wall of China was so huge it can be seen from Space! We each ate a Fortune Cookie (and read our "fortunes") ~~~ and " Take-home information" was distributed for further study/learning enjoyment at your leisure. Miss Alice (a Native of Hong Kong) visited us on February 27th (with her daughter) and taught us many many facts about Chinese New Year, including the custom of Red Pockets, and ancient Chinese traditions/practices which many families still adhere to today. She read the children a story, and held a question/answer por-tion and the students were lively and engaged in the discussion. It was a very enjoyable demon-stration and afterwards the children thanked Miss Alice (and applauded!) (As an aside, our Staff makes a practice of always reminding all the chil-dren to thank our presenters~~ Good manners are free, but make you feel like a million dollars! ) Ben Frank kids ROCK good manners! Next week, we resume our Passport excursions and we are "visiting" GREECE. (We will sample dolmades, spanikopita, tzakiki, and baklava (which is also Lebanese and Turkish). Greece is most historic, fascinating and beautiful. It will be a fun week (if it

ever stops snowing..)

As ever, we are looking ahead ( while enjoying all our "todays") to more fun and learning together.

dren. We did spin art, which is hanging up by the sign-out sheet so you can enjoy what your child(ren) have created. There were Play-Doh animals created by the children which where brought home. The children were very creative. Also rings, fish, octopus made out of pipe cleaners were fun to make. I know that the children are enjoying the activities because they are very proud of their work. It is so enjoyable to see their creative side. They can't wait to see what is

in store for the month of March.

This month we will be having our Yogurt Bar with pineapple and mandarins, granola and other toppings. We are focusing on helping the children make healthy food choices. For a special treat we will have a special waffle snack topped with fresh fruit. It is something new, so we will see how the children will respond to it. I hope they will like it and en-joy it. If you would like to make any sugges-

tions to further our making healthy food choices, please do not hesitate to let us know

your thoughts.

We would like to say thank you to Joshua and Jacob for donating their stuffed animals which they no longer use. We are so happy for new things. If you have any toys, Bar-bies, stuffed animals or anything that you would like to donate to the Children's Center, it would be greatly appreci-ated. Spring cleaning is fast approaching, so just think of the Center if you would like

to clean house.

Thank you Natalie for the kind donations of Barbie Dolls! We will surely give them a good

home at LCC.

February was a very short month and flew by. We had an active month with all the crafts, 2 contests, and

Jewelry, Zumba, Self Defense. I hope that whoever received the beautiful bracelets from their child or children really enjoyed them. The children en-joyed making them for you. We had two winners for the Eatable Arrangements that were made with fresh fruit and some pieces dipped in chocolate. Congratula-tions to Kailee and Jayson. We also had winners whoevermade the best floating device. Congratulations to Joshua,

afforded us the opportunities to

participate in an activity that com-

bined healthful exercise, a learning

experience and just plain fun! Snow-

shoeing has a history of usefulness

and gave us an opportunity to enjoy

this winter in spite of its draw-

backs! Parents who did not actually

see their children participating can

access photos at our slide show ta-

ble by the stage.

One of our staff members, Sue

Carr, donated two wonderful items

to our children. One was a brand new

and exciting Harry Potter Lego set!

The other was a metal detector that

we are looking forward to using out-

Mad Scientist Nancy instructed two

times last month. The properties of

dry ice were studied and was met

with great enthusiasm by every

grade level. Sublimination, a concept

many did not know about was under-

stood completely when the children

saw it happen with their own eyes!

We kept physically fit during Febru-

ary with classes in yoga and Zumba.

We kept hands busy with Valentine

crafts including painting and deco-

rating wooden Valentine boxes and

assembling beautiful Valentine brace-

lets.

Our visits to various zoos such as the

San Diego Zoo attract children and

parents alike. We keep tabs on pandas

and penguins and everything in be-

tween. Parents love watching too!

Another thing parents enjoy almost

as much as their children is our be-

loved Chef Stanley. Last month’s culi-

nary delight was a cinna-banana que-

sadilla with strawberry salsa. He

could have made thousands and they

would all have been devoured by the

children, parents and staff alike.

Many copies of the recipe went home

and the treat was enjoyed again and

again.

Picassos painted won-derful works of art, from the Tour Eif-fel to a beach lighthouse scene as well as an under the seascape. Bricks 4 Kidz also kept us working hard with our motorized Lego builders, crafting a motorized solar system that rivals some of the models at NASA. Looks like some of our kids might become astronauts after

all!

Chef Stanley visited and made his very popular, very delicious, potato pancakes. Chef is always engaging and fun, teaching us about the history of the potato and the best way to eat healthy. Who knew there are over a thousand varieties of potatoes? Even the staff is getting crafty, Ms. Caitlin has been teaching the children how to knit scarves with a loom. Every child gets a

Even though February is the shortest month, it felt like the longest part of the winter! And now winter has extended into this month. Let’s hope March goes out like a lamb. We are all ready to spring for-ward here at TJ! I would like to extend a warm welcome our two new employees, Ms. Maureen and Ms. Maria to the TJ Family. Both Ms. Maureen and Ms. Maria have hit the ground running and we are

lucky to have them on our team.

Thanks to all the snow days and holiday break, we have had a relatively quiet month here at TJ, but despite the below normal temperatures and copious amounts of snow, we did manage to have one day that was warm enough to let the kids play outside. Needless to say it was twenty minutes of pure bliss! To keep our kids entertained throughout the winter chill, we still managed to incorporate some special programming. KidzArt has visited us every Friday. Our young

ball of yarn to complete his or her pint-sized scarves. Two children completed their scarves already, and we look forward to seeing them

worn around the playground.

Ms. Anne also has been improving our kids’ craftsmanship and sewing skills, letting the kids create magical and creative artworks out of felt. Many have kept with the season by making a collection of snowmen. Poetry with Ms. Charlotte has finished, but the children keep practicing their poems for our reading.

Please note, however, due to snow days, the Poetry Reading has been changed to Wednesday, March 18th, 2015 at 4:30 in the

March arrives and of course we are

hoping for nicer weather. We can’t wait

for the opportunity to enjoy the outside

again. It seems to have been a long win-

ter and we are experiencing “Cabin Fe-

ver”.

Our country exploration continues with

Ireland of course. We will celebrate St.

Patrick’s Day as well, learning all about

Ireland. People, places and food. We

will also learn about the origin of St.

Patrick and the meaning of the holiday.

Our special snack will be our annual

green bagels with toppings and Irish

soda bread.

February was a fun

month! We enjoyed

Valentine’s Day and

finished our exploration of France. The

buttery croissants were delicious.

Elaine, our sewing instructor visited us.

The children made very pretty stuffed,

red felt heart pillows. We are becoming

very good at sewing due to Miss Elaine.

Michelle, our Jeweler, also visited us.

Pink and purple beaded bracelets were

so pretty and easy to make...great Val-

entine’s gifts for anyone to receive!

Nancy, our ‘Mad Scientist”, instructed

us on gravity, thrust, lift and drag. The

children put together a ‘Dipperdoo’

plane that demonstrated these science

principles with loops and circles. Also,

our tennis instructors were really good.

Bill and Gail taught us lots about rac-

quet positions and other tennis

skills...very enjoyable and we learn a

little more each time they come in to

Once again, Miss Elaine was back and we

were glad. The children sewed beautiful

stuffed felt houses. They came out great.

Miss Elaine always has wonderful ideas. In

addition, Fuse beads and puzzles were a

big hit February through March. Puzzles

are great because many children can be

involved. An additional treat; Frank

Troiano, one of our parents is a profes-

sional chef. He visited us preparing pasta

and sauce. The children joined in to help

and enjoyed a delicious snack. Other

March visitors will be sewing, Elite Self

Defense, Zumba, Chef Stanley, Jewelry

and KidzArt.
