April 21, 1836Texas became Texas on April 21, 1836 , after the battle of San Jacinto. In the battle of San Jacinto. The Texans took Santa Anna and made him sign a document. Another thing that happened this year was that Sam Houston was elected as the first president of the republic of Texas. Houston became the capital of Texas that year to.

1838

In 1838 Mirabeau Lamar was elected as president. The constitution of 1836 claimed that the president couldn’t serve consecutive terms, so Houston was not able to be reelected . Texans elected Mirabeau B. Lamar who had served vice president under Houston. Lamar who had great hopes for Texas didn’t want annexation. He wanted Texas to be an independent nation and to expand all the way to the pacific ocean. Lamar wanted education in Texas very badly. Texas got a better education it just cost a lot of money. Then when oil was found in Texas the endowment fund multiplied. Lamar did a good job and he was sometimes called “ Father of Education” because of his efforts.

1839In 1839 Austin became the new capital of Texas. It was agrees that Houston would be the capital only until another place was chosen . In 1839 a congress and commission approved a place on the Colorado River near the village of Waterloo . Lamar wanted to expand the settlement westward. The government got Edward Waller to make plans for the street and construct a capitol on this site. In October 1839 president Lamar and his cabinet arrived in the new capital. The capital was named Austin in honor of Stephen F Austin.

1841Sam Houston came back to the presidency in 1841. He had been president before , but his term ended and the people said he could not be elected until two years after his first years of being a president.

While Sam Houston was not president Mirabeau B. Lamar served as president and made some changes. When Sam Houston became president again he undid those changes because Texas was in very bad debt.

1845

Congressional leaders who wanted annexation proposed that Texas be annexed with a join resolution. Approving a treaty required two thirds of the majority of votes in each house. Congress passed a joint resolution for annexation on February 28,1845.As soon as its people approved annexation Texas could enter the nation .

1846

A lot of people were immigrating in to Texas from Europe. The German Immigration that started in the period of the republic continued. The Germans expanded Fredericksburg.Political and economic difficulties led more and more Germans into America for a brand new start. The Germans contributed to the intellectual life of the young state.

1847

The German Immigration brought in 7,000 German immigrants. The German settelers built lots of towns . The largest towns were Fredericksberg , New Braunsfel near San Antonio . Citizens in Boerne , Comfort, Sisterdale, and similar towns got clubs together to study German writings. They also had musical groups to play their favorite German tunes.

1850In 1850 the constitution was changed to provide for the election of all judges.This got some power from political leaders to voters. This new consitution barred women from voting and protected the system of slavery. Originally the governor pointed out the judges of the state courts.

1954

In 1854 Texas set aside two million dollars for public education . The United States forces were better equipped and they were better led than their opponents. Now the United States was prepared to pay all of its debts owed to its citizens and give thirty million to mexico.

1861

In 1861 Texas was voted to join the conferderate states of America.In 1861 Texas joined ten other southern states in forming the Confederate States of America . This action followed years of long standing differences.

determine whether to convict.

A two thirds vote is necessary to remove the

person from office.

a president.
