The call came in the middle of a hot, humidday. A distressed man said the surface ofhis pool had developed mysterious dark-colored spots, and he needed a PI to figureout why. I put thoughts of a cold one awayand hurried off. When I reached the pool, the owner opined it was metal staining. But I took one look at those spots andknew the nemesis we were facing. Youdon’t soon forget the look ofblack algae! The diagnosis was simple, but how hadalgae established itself in a seeminglywell-maintained pool? I got out my TaylorsureTRACK ™ test strips and performed asanitizer check; the free chlorine levelwas drastically low. “Sir, do you have anautomatic chlorinator?” I asked. He did,and I asked him to show it to me. Sureenough, the chlorinator had been switched

off accidentally. Unfortunately, thepool owner hadn’t tested his

chlorine level every day likehe should. Inadequate

disinfection and scorchingtemperatures had combined to

create the perfect conditions forthis tenacious invader. He rushedto his chemical supplier foralgaecide and a stainless steelpool brush, and I went back tomy office to wait for the nextcall. Case closed.

When the market asked, “Where areTaylor’s test strips?” we said, “They’llhave to be pretty special before we’ll putour name on the bottle. The company’sreputation as the most trusted name inwater testing is our greatest asset.” Whenwe released our sureTRACK™- 4 test stripslast year, after trials by consumers andexperts alike, our dry chemistry formula-tions proved themselves worthy. From thedispenser to the color standards to thereagent pads, our strips delivered conven-ience without compromise. We’re pleasedto announce that in 2004 the same can besaid of our new sureTRACK™ - 6 test strips!

Each bottle of these six-way tests contains50 strips to simultaneously determine freechlorine or bromine, pH, total alkalinity, total hardness, and cyanuric acid stabilizer.(The four-way tests include the sameparameters, minus hardness and stabilizer.)The target ranges for each of these valuescorrespond to the updated recommenda-tions of the American National StandardsInstitute (ANSI) and the National Spa &Pool Institute (NSPI). Note: the chemicalindicator in our free chlorine test will notgive a false-positive result in the presenceof monopersulfate shock or a high level ofcombined chlorine.

Product ships in plain cartons and ispeggable. A free counter display for 25bottles may be requested by calling800-TEST KIT or by [email protected].

The “do-it-yourself” type is not afraid tolearn new skills. These are the consumerswho will appreciate our new i-CARE™ kit(K-1005), a comprehensive set of pool andspa water-quality tests for homes connectedto the Internet. Modeled after theComplete™ kit in our 2000 Series™ forprofessionals—a longtime favorite ofservice technicians—it contains all the testsneeded to assure sanitary, balanced water, including chlorine stabilizer (cyanuricacid) and calcium hardness.

In most areas of the country, if owners keeptheir water chemistry within the “ideal”ranges noted in the user’s manual, this willbe sufficient to keep the vessel and itsequipment protected from corrosion andscaling. When testing reveals parameter(s)outside the ideal range, consumers candetermine what treatment is necessary tobalance the water by accessing Taylor’swebsite, selecting POOL/SPA, clickingon ANALYE YOUR WATER, and thenplugging in their test results.

Note: DIYers without Internet accessshould purchase the Complete™ kit(K-2005) on page 9, which contains aWatergram ™ for balance calculations.

The K-1005 employs the high-range comparator (9782) like other kits in theResidential Series™. The DPD method isused exclusively for determining chlorineand bromine levels. A 25 mL sample tube(4034) is included for performing the totalalkalinity and hardness tests, as is aspecially marked test tube for determiningthe level of stabilizer in outdoor pools thatare protected from chlorine degradationby cyanuric acid. The molded plastic case, which will stack or hang, secures .75 oz.bottles of reagent.

Fridays are always a busy day for mebecause of all the weekend pool partiesparents throw for their kids. My mostrecent call went like this. “Mr. Investigotter,we’re having a pool party for our daughter’sbirthday on Sunday, but there’s somethingwrong with our water. The pH reading isjumping around, and we don’t know why.”Being a PI, I knew immediately I waslooking at a case of dreaded “pH bounce.”I hurried to the pool with my Taylor K-2015and performed a total alkalinity test. Sureenough, the alkalinity was very low, thus

making the pH difficult to stabilize.I reminded the owners to test

total alkalinity weekly toprevent damage to their pool

and its equipment, unnecessaryexpenditures on chlorine, and

skin and eye irritation. Sinceadjusting total alkalinity can alsoaffect pH, I suggested thecouple always correct theirtotal alkalinity first. Then I putthe wraps on yet another waterchemistry puzzle.

Nothing stops a refreshing soak fasterthan snagging your suit (birthday orotherwise) on rough surface deposits. Butthat’s exactly what my last client wasconfronted with. At the crime scene, I foundcloudy water, scaling, a partially cloggedfilter, and inefficient heating marring anotherwise beautiful spa. I suspected thecause right away, and a water testwith my Taylor K-2005 confirmedit. The spa was afflicted withhigh calcium hardness.Unfortunately, removing thesedeposits was no simple matter. It was clear the owner had tohire professionals to give theplaster an acid wash. I wishedhim good luck, and remindedhim to test for calcium hardnessat least once per month. For hisspa’s sake—and his derrière’s—I hope he’ll remember.

The latest trend in chlorine testing atcommercial aquatics facilities has been to arefinement of the DPD color-comparisonmethod—the FAS-DPD titration. With anFAS-DPD titration you can read free andcombined chlorine directly, withoutsubtraction; measure these levels as low as0.2 ppm and as high as 20 ppm; andeliminate color matching.

Calculations of treatment dosages aremore accurate—no under- or overdosing.ery high levels of chlorine that would beoff-scale on a color comparator are easy todetermine by counting drops. And, thedistinct change in the treated water samplefrom vibrant pink to no color is easy foreveryone to see.

Taylor offers an FAS-DPD version ofseveral 2000 Series™ kits, listed at right. In addition, FAS-DPD tests can bepurchased separately in both .75 oz. and2 oz. sizes (chlorine is K-1515, bromine isK-1517, chlorine/monopersulfate combo isK-1518;see Specialty Tests on page 14).

I stopped by a local pool supply store onemorning to replenish my reagents. Waitingin line to check out I heard two guys talkingin hushed tones behind me. I immediatelygrew suspicious and began to eavesdrop.“No, that’s not it,” one said, “I’m followingthe directions exactly, I just can’t read thesanitizer level. Three ppm, five ppm, whocan tell the difference?” I spun around andasked the troubled tester if he used a colorcomparator for sanitizer checks. Turns outhe did. I pulled a Taylor kit off theshelf and handed it to him. “You’d bettertake one of these with you,” I told him,“Sounds to me like you have red-greencolorblindness.” He looked at me incredu-lously, so I explained that about 6% ofmen have difficulty differentiating betweenthe pink colors on a standardcomparator, which is just oneof the reasons Taylor offersFAS-DPD sanitizer tests.Instead of comparing colors, you just titrate until the pinksample turns colorless. There’sno guesswork involved, and theFAS-DPD method allows you todetermine both free andcombined chlorine directly, nosubtraction required. (A bennieI myself appreciate.)

I was sitting in my office one day, checkingthe expiration date on my test strips, whenthe phone rang. “What’s that?” I said tothe frantic lady on the other end, “You andyour son went swimming, and now you’veboth got green hair? I’ll be right there.”When I got to the scene, I found the boy’smother in a panic. She was sure theirgreen hair was due to too much chlorine, but she had tested the sanitizer level, andit was within the ideal range. “Ma’am,” Isaid, “that chlorine myth is the oldest onein the book.” As all PIs know, copper turnshair green, not chlorine. I unpacked myTaylor K-1738, took a water sample, addedsome reagents, and sure enough thesample developed a blue color, which Imatched to my printed-color standards—2.0 ppm! Her eyes beseeched me forreassurance. “Copper gets into poolsand spas through fill water, treatment, or from plumbingcorroded by unbalancedwater, so more investigationwill be necessary to determinethe exact source of the metal,”I said. I pointed the formerblonde in the direction of someswimmer’s shampoo to preventany more unintentional hair-coloring episodes. The Case ofthe Green-Haired Swimmerswas resolved by that afternoon.

Many of our reagents are specificallyformulated to work with a test cell ofcertain volume. Therefore, when orderingreplacement reagents it is helpful to knowthe part number of the kit the reagentcame from (K-XXXX) or the reagentnumber itself (R-XXXX). Because allchemicals have a shelf life, you shouldgauge your usage rates carefully beforeordering in quantity and be sure to rotateyour stock.

Reagents are available singly for all fieldsizes shown in this catalog, and most inboxed multi-packs. Many reagents are alsooffered in bulk (pints, quarts, gallons, pounds, tablet multi-packs, etc.). Allavailable reagents, including DPD tablets, are listed in the Pool & Spa Water TestingProducts Price List. The tables below showreplacement reagents for our most popularproducts.

One of the strangest cases I’ve workedinvolved a hot tub with a terrible odorproblem. When I arrived at the scene, Iquestioned the owners and learned theirwater was sanitized with chlorine and thetub was drained and refilled at properintervals. Nevertheless, the situationsmelled fishy. Well, to be more accurate, itsmelled like chloramines. So I asked if theytested for both free and combined chlorine. They said they did and found the levelsacceptable. I asked to inspect their test kit,and the minute I saw it I knew this caperwas an inside job! Turns out the ownersstored their kit spaside with the lid rippedoff, exposing the contents to sunlight andhigh temperatures. When I asked if theytook the kit inside over the winter; theycracked like a couple of icicles and toldme they didn’t. More inspection revealedinterchanged bottle caps andreagents clearly overdue forreplacement. No wonder theirspa smelled; their reagentswere useless. These jokerswere clearly guilty of gross testkit neglect, so I threw the bookat them—Taylor’s Pool and SpaWater Chemistry book, that is.The 2004B clearly explains theproper care of reagents andmuch more. If your copy hasgone missing, replacementsare available.

Proper Care of ReagentsExtreme temperature fluctuations can cause reagents to deteriorate quickly. To maintain their shelf life, store reagents at a consistent temperature of36°–85°F (2°–29°C). If liquid reagents should freeze, they may remainuseful if allowed to thaw completely at room temperature. However, if thebottle cracks, if you see a crusty buildup around the dropper tip, or ifthere are floating particles that do not dissolve when the bottle is shaken, the reagent should be replaced. For more detailed information, call800-TEST KIT (837-8548) and request our technical bulletin on reagentshelf life. And, when placing an order, don’t forget to request heated or“protect from freezing” service with motor freight if necessary.
