The Man in the MaskNed Kelly was born in Victoria in 1855, the son of Irish parents. He had five sisters and three brothers. When his father died, he left school to become the family’s breadwinner. He was eleven years old.
The family moved to a hut in northern Victoria. During his teenage years, Ned and his brother, Dan, were often in trouble with the law. At 17, Ned was sentenced to three years gaol. After his release, he took up cattle rustling and horse stealing.
In 1878, Mrs Kelly was arrested and sentenced to three years gaol. Ned and Dan, together with friends, Joe Byrne and Steve Hart, went bush to avoid the police. In the manhunt that followed, three policemen were shot. The Kelly Gang were now outlaws with large rewards offered for their capture, dead or alive.
After months on the run, there was a final showdown at the Glenrowan Inn. Police surrounded the hotel trapping the gang inside. A long gun battle followed. Finally, Ned Kelly, wearing home-made, plate-metal armour and helmet, came out shooting. He was shot in the legs and captured. The rest of his gang were all dead.
Ned Kelly was tried and sentenced to death. He was hanged in the Old Melbourne gaol on November 11, 1880. He was 25 years old.
Ned Kelly has become an Australian folk hero representing courage, daring and determination. This larger-than-life character dressed in his famous armour has inspired many imaginative tales, songs, movies and artwork.

Hard TimesJack Adams was playing skittles in the backyard when Wall Street collapsed! He had just scored three perfect knockdowns when he heard his mother cry out from the kitchen. He rushed inside to find her sitting at the table—white-faced, her hands folded in her lap—staring at the wireless on the shelf above the old wood stove. Without turning her head she whispered, “Wall Street has collapsed, Jack.” Jack didn’t know what to say. He didn’t even know what she meant; he had never heard of a Wall Street. He put a hand awkwardly on her shoulder and shuffled his bare feet. Minutes later his dad appeared at the kitchen door. Tearfully his mum told him the news. Dad said the blokes at work had already told him and offered to make her a nice hot cup of tea. (It’s funny how adults think a hot cup of tea will solve everything.)
Jack’s life was never to be the same again. His teacher informed the class that Wall Street was a place in New York which housed the American stock market. Almost overnight in October 1929, shares had fallen to rock bottom prices. Fortunes were lost; the rich became poor and many workers were left jobless and homeless. The teacher looked at the children grimly and told them that they would all have to tighten their belts. Jack looked down at his and wondered how he would do that — he didn’t have any more holes!

(Non-Digital Copy) The Last Tree
A group of families and friends travelled from a hot land to a land that was lush and green and filled
with trees. When winter arrived they chopped trees and built houses. When spring came the winds
whipped through and they decided to chop trees to build a wall to protect them from the gusts. As a
result there was no play or happy times, only the wall. The families that were friends became distant
and unhappy. The children would sneak out beyond the wall and play and watch over the last tree.
They gathered its seeds and planted more trees. Slowly the children began to break down the wall.
One Tree
One tall tree on the mountain once marked Grandfather’s farm. Now there is a busy city and Grandfather lives with us in our apartment.
Once he told stories but now he stays silent. Until one day, in the city market, I find something precious . . . something that brings Grandfather’s memories alive again.
A touching and uplifting story about love, change and the importance of the natural environment in all our lives.

WHY TRIANGLES ARE A STRONG SHAPE
When engineers build structures, they want to make sure that the structure can bear weight. In other words, they do not want the structure to fall when a force is applied to it. For example, bridges must be able to hold up the materials that make the bridge, as well as all the traffic travelling across it. One of the shapes that can bear weight very well is the triangle. But what makes triangles so good at this?
Let’s look at how a triangle transfers a force.
When a force (the load) is applied to one of the corners of a triangle, it is distributed down each side. The two sides of the triangle are squeezed. Another word for this squeezing is compression. The third side of the triangle is pulled or stretched sideways. Another word
Let’s Talk Science). for this stretching is tension.
When a downward load is applied to the top corner of a triangle, the sides of triangle experience compression and the base of the triangle experiences tension
HOW TRIANGLES ARE USED IN BRIDGES
You often see triangles used to create bridges. Bridges combine multiple triangles. They apply compression and tension in different places.
DEVELOP AND MAKE Week 3 Worksheet 2
Name:__________________ Class:_______
Using a deck of cards, sticks, wood or cardboard, test the strength of differently shaped triangles.
Resources: Paper , straws, masking tape, cardboard toilet rolls, playing cards, device to access links (not Mandatory)
1.Build a triangle and place a heavy item like a book on top. Draw a picture or upload a photo of your creation.
2. Try different materials and connect more than 1 triangle together to see if a larger item can be supported. Draw or upload a photo here.
Was the book supported? Why was it more supported with two or more triangles?

Test your triangles a few times, then begin to consider how you could build a bridge using your triangles. Draw or upload photos of the steps you followed in your design process. Refer to Week 2 Research below to determine how you could build a bridge strong enough to support a book.
WHAT MAKES BRIDGES STRONG? Resource 1
Sydney Harbour Bridge The Sydney Harbour Bridge is strong because it has triangles. Triangles make for a strong structure because they work off compression and tension. Triangles on the Harbour Bridge are in the arch because the arch needs to be strong to keep the bridge up and carry the load. An arch is useful because it transfers the load instead of focusing the load on one spot. By encompassing these two features, it makes the harbour bridge a though arch steel bridge which is
designed to last long and hold a lot of weight.
Anzac Bridge
The Anzac Bridge is situated in Sydney. It is a cable-stayed bridge. It has cables attached to the roads to keep them up. The bridge has eight lanes. It carries bikes, cars and pedestrians. It is made up of steel and concrete. Its span is 805m and the highest point is 120m. It is a strong bridge because of the materials used and the cords situated throughout the bridge disperses weight effectively.
Once you have tested your bridge and using the above research about bridges and how triangles
are a strong shape, answer the following:
What materials did I use?
