ASPIRE and SOAR

TERM 4 ISSUE 18

We have again farewelled John Clarke as he travels to Hong Kong for two weeks. John will be returning just in time to take over the organisation of Kidman Celebrates in week 8. While away, Pauline McCarthy has taken on the initial preparation for the end of year celebrations. (She thought she was going to have a quiet term before her retirement!!).

It is an extremely busy time here at KPPS as we complete reports, class placement, organise Year 7 graduation and continue to rehearse for Kidman Celebrates. We have even started preparation for swimming and other events in 2014! We still have a few weeks to go and I know all staff members are working extremely hard to ensure we will again be finishing the year on an extremely positive note. It is wonderful to see that even with the change of routines, our students are also continuing to live up to our school values.

On Thursday we will be having the last ever end of year transition to our school. We have almost 27 new students who will be making history at KPPS by being the first group to enter our school in 2014 under “the same day first start policy”. As a result our transition program will look different to previous years. There will be two visits, with the first one this Thursday morning until just after recess. The second transition in week 7, will be the first afternoon transition visit ever at KPPS. Students will go to their class and then after the bell will join their parents for an afternoon tea and play session being hosted by our Governing Council. Thank you to our Governing Council members who will be volunteering their time to ensure a successful transition to school for our new students and families.

It is exciting times in the Early Years as we move towards same day, first start previously mentioned. Already our Early Years teachers in collaboration with teachers from our local kindergartens have had talks on the changes that are imminent. Discussion topics have included how the pathway from the preschool curriculum Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and the Australian Curriculum (AC) will look. While there are differences in the two curriculums both emphasize fostering successful, confident and creative learners and active and informed citizens. Importantly the Foundation year (defined as the year prior to Year One) in the AC, builds on the learning experienced in the preschool setting. The AC also recognises that EYLF establishes the foundations for effective learning in schools. A student’s first year of learning is assessed again the Foundation Standard in the AC. With all this in mind, and acknowledging that it can take up to 12 to 18 months for an early years student to fully transition into the school setting, it seems fitting that we should rename our reception year to FOUNDATION.

A reminder that our school is not supervised after 3:25pm each day. By 3:30pm many teachers are involved in meetings or training and development. After this time students become the sole responsibility of their parents therefore any student who is in the yard unsupervised is taken to the office so we can make contact with their parents. When parents are unavailable students will be taken to OSHC and the appropriate fees will be charged to the parent.

Students going home and returning back onto the school site

will also have their parents called.

Thinking about electronic devices for Christmas?

Are you aware that a child must be at least 13 years of age

to be eligible to sign up for Facebook.

If your child has access to other forms of social media it is

important to set clear guidelines and rules for them to follow.

Appropriate guidelines could include:

1. Making sure you know their password and that it cannot be changed without your permission. 2. Monitoring and approving what information they put in their profile ensuring that it is not too personal. This also includes photos. 3. Remind your child that anything they put onto social mediums won’t go away just by deleting it. 4. If your child receives inappropriate messages, remind them to talk to you and then advise them to block the sender from their page /contact list.

ACMA (Australian Communications and Media Authority) have many resources available to parents to help you establish a safe and responsible environment at home.

Kidman Celebrates

2013 Our massive end of year celebration will be held at the Family Centre on Frederick Rd, Seaton, at 7pm on Wednesday December 11th.

Details about tickets have been sent home. Put the date in your diary now and support our students as they display their special talents and performing arts skills. All classes will perform on the night. Kidman Celebrates is a fun night for our community to celebrate the end of the school year and for students to; show what they have learnt as a part of our arts program, develop their confidence all in front of a supportive and appreciative audience.

Once again, tickets will be $6 with a limited amount available. Four tickets per family will be available at the front office until Friday 22nd November.

All remaining tickets will be available to purchase from Monday 25th November. We will sell out and we cannot add extra seats due to fire regulations. It is important that families do not leave purchasing tickets until the last minute. Downstairs is almost sold out!

All KPPS students performing on the night do not require a ticket. We expect all KPPS students to be a part of the performance and then stay with their class in the back of the hall after performing.

Bon Jovi will be performing at Football Park on the same night traffic might be a little more congested on the night.

OSHC NEWS

OSHC FUNDRAISING Thanks to all the Kidman Park Primary School Community for its support during the sausage sizzle last Friday. More especially we would like to thank our volunteers who did a terrific job and made a great effort donating their time and energy. As a result we raised funds that will allow us to have enough money for new tables and chairs for our children at OSHC.

KIDSMATTER CONFERENCE As part of our investment in professional development our Assistant Director (Preeti) attended the KidsMatter Conference SA last week. The aim of the conference was to stimulate new ideas and strategies to improve our participant’s mental health and wellbeing.

VACCARE We attached our Vaccare Program to the last newsletter and since then we have received quite a few bookings. If for any reason you did not get a copy please contact OSHC at your earliest convenience.

OSHC GARDENERS Lee and an enthusiastic group of OHSC little gardeners started our OSHC spring fresh garden this term. Good for the participants who have been patiently taking litres of water every day for the plants to drink. Our After School cooks are all looking forward to being able to use the green produce in one of our recipes.

Freddy Santos OSHC Director

The Canteen Committee would like to send a big thankyou to Manager Grant Twigden, of Drakes Foodland Findon on Grange Road, one of our suppliers. He has arranged a generous donation of shiny new baskets for the canteen. These are now in daily use, replacing our previous broken, dilapidated, too heavy or too small baskets. We love them. Thanks Grant!

Please support the local businesses that support our school.

ST LUKE’S MISSION

Dear Parents/Caregivers, This term some classes in our school are again continuing to support St. Luke’s Mission. In the last few years families have donated shoe boxes filled with gifts, but this year we are hoping to donate one significant gift to each child. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to assist families in need. This activity supports our school values of respect and care towards others. If you would like to be involved in the process please see the list below for some gift ideas. Your support is greatly appreciated as the gifts will be collected and distributed on Christmas Day by St. Luke’s volunteers to children who would otherwise not receive a Christmas gift. You can help by donating any of the following (we will wrap the gifts for you):

New toys/games for children birth to age 14 years

New clothes

Money donations and staff will buy fillers for the shoe boxes

Stationary items

New soft toys

Let us all join in the spirit of caring and giving to others. Please send all donations to room 8 by Friday 29th November. Many thanks, Desy Pantelos (Class teacher)

DENTAL CARE FOR YOUR CHILDREN

The Challenge is to do at least 60 minutes of physical

activity on at least 5 days of the week for at least 4

weeks. Congratulations to all students and families who

took part. Medals will be distributed and worn at next

week’s assembly.

It is important for children to have strong, healthy teeth and gums. All children (0 – 17 years) are welcome to attend School Dental Service clinics. Dental treatment is free at School Dental Service clinics if:

Family Tax Benefit Part A is paid for your child, or Your child is covered by a School Card, Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card. The School Dental Service will bulk-bill under

the new Medicare Child Dental Benefits Schedule that starts in 2014. Under this scheme, most children aged between 2-17 years will be eligible to claim up to $1000 of Dental services over 2 years. If your child already attends a SA Dental Service clinic, contact us when their next appointment is due. If your child does not already attend one of our clinics, please phone us to make an appointment in 2014. For more information contact your local clinic. Clinic list found at www.sadental.sa.gov.au

volunteering while Campbell, Julia and Mackenzie played

KPPS sport.

also leaving us as Jordan moves to high school. Also to

こんにちはKonnichiwa,

Did you know that last Friday 8 of our Year 4/5 students represented KPPS at the inaugural Japanese Language Teacher’s Association of SA Obento Masterchef Competition? 28 teams from around Adelaide competed in a contest of creativity, presentation, nutrition, hygiene, teamwork and Japanese culture. There were some interesting and amazing final products and our students are very keen to have another go next year. I was extremely proud of the way all 8 students demonstrated our school values – well done Colleen, Wendy, Portia, Ellie, Erin, Emillya, Anna and Victoria.
