Upcoming Dates Head of School Dear St John’s School Community, Wow. How quickly we have reached the middle of Term 3! Where has the time gone? It’s been fantastic to see the students and teachers eagerly practising their items in order to prepare for our annual School Concert. As you can imagine, a lot of effort is put into class performances and students certainly enjoy the opportunity to showcase their talents! Thank you to those parents and grandparents who have eased the traffic congestion during pick up and drop off times at School. It’s wonderful to see that parents and grandparents are staggering their times or have opted to park a little further away. Please be advised that there have been parking inspectors monitoring the situation. We ask that you cooperate with our School Staff who are on duty on Pakington and Aberdeen Streets should they point out to you that you may be causing congestion or a safety hazard. Student safety is paramount! Robin Mann entertained the students on Monday afternoon, with everyone joining in to sing along to an array of familiar songs. It’s always great opportunity for the students to meet a songwriter face to face. It not only familiarises them with the person who creates songs which they sing at School, but it allows the students to identify another way that the Lord works through individuals and their talents! Next week, students and teachers will be celebrating Book Week and Science Week. It will begin with S1 (Mr T’s class) presenting the play ‘Joseph and his Coat of many Colours’ to the Red Kinder Group on Tuesday morning. On Wednesday morning during Chapel, S2 will be presenting a film of them acting out “Joseph and his Coat of many Colours’ to the whole School, followed by both of the Senior classes singing the song of the same name, as well as the Prep students performing ‘The Rainbow Song’. On Thursday afternoon, all students will be involved in a whole School Science afternoon where they will complete a range of rotations with a Science focus. I would like to extend a big thank you to Mrs Lytzki, Mrs Looker, Mrs West, Mrs Foott, Mrs Gibbons and Miss Grieger for their wonderful contributions and preparation. I remind you all that tomorrow and Friday are curriculum days where staff will be involved in professional development. As of next week, Mrs Jeanette Pelchen will take over the role of ‘Acting Head of School’ until the end of Term 3 whilst I go back to teaching S1. Farewell

This week we farewell Lily (S1) and her family from St John’s School Community. We wish Lily and her family all the best as they move overseas.

Book Week

This year, we will be celebrating Book Week starting with our senior students presenting a drama performance of “Joseph and his coat of many colours” on Tuesday 18th August for our St John’s Kindergarten Red Group. Parents are invited to come along and watch.

The Library Captains will be presenting the Chapel Service on the 19th of August, continuing with a Science afternoon on the 20th of August and finishing with our Open Library Day.

This year’s Open Library Day will be held on Wednesday 26th August featuring this year’s Book Week theme “Books Light Up Our World”.

The Library will be open for parents and friends to visit and share the children’s displays and books created by each class. Refreshments will be available throughout the day. A small book shop is on offer for you to purchase a book and donate it to the Library. Purchases can be cash or credit card. Your donation will be recognised inside the book. Books for purchase will be available for viewing in the Library from Monday 24th August (before and after school).

If parents would also like a copy of any book for their child, they can order and pay on the day and the book will be delivered to the School for collection through the week. Library classes will still be operating on the day. Parents and friends are warmly invited to come in to the Library, view the children’s work and participate in Library sessions. QUIP Planning Day All Kinder Staff will be attending the QUIP planning day on Tuesday 8th September. The Kinder will run as normal with relief staff. We thought we would give advance notice so if your child may be uncomfortable with new staff, you can organise alternative arrangements. Two of the relief staff have helped out last term when Sue was on leave, so they are familiar with our routines. Current staff will return for pickup to ensure things run smoothly. If you have any queries please speak to Rae.

Policy Review We are currently reviewing our policies. It is mandatory that the Kinder gives parents the opportunity to review the changes we make to these policies and to provide feedback. We have changed how these policies are available to review. We now have them available on the website. Please see Rae to gain the link and password if you are interested in providing feedback on the policies.

Vacancies 2016 The Kinder still has vacancies for 2016. If you know of any families that need a 4 Year Old Kinder program for 2016, please contact the School Office.

Student Wellbeing News

WELLBEING PASSPORTS Last week a wellbeing initiative was launched for all students. Everyone should have brought home a wellbeing passport with lots of activities to complete during August. The passports were put together by Mr Hedt and encourage the children to explore areas such as friendships, social awareness, feelings, self-management and support networks. Everyone student who enters the competition receives a novelty stress ball as well as going into a draw from some other great prizes. The challenge requires parent support at home, but will be lots of fun and a great opportunity to see your child learn and grow. The passports need to be completed and handed in before Friday August 28. Angela McLean, Wellbeing Coordinator

Netball News

SEEKING EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST: Hello to all those keen Netballers out there,

We'd like to open up an Expression of Interest to any students (Years 3&4 in 2016) of St Johns, who might like to play netball for the upcoming Summer season.

The "Summer Season" commences at the beginning of Term 4 2015 (first week back) and runs through until the end of Term 1 2016. The preference is to commit to a weekly game for the entire season.

As some of our current Lollipops are now progressing to the Years 5&6 competition which will see them in a new team, we particularly need some new players to support the Years 3&4 team (this is for students who will be in Years 3 or 4 in 2016).

The 2016 Years 5&6 (currently the 2015 Lollipops) team will continue playing on a Wednesday afternoon throughout the Summer Season. All of this does depend on available Coaches and Parent Helpers.

For the Years 3&4 interest, please make contact with (mother of Leah) on For the Years 5&6 interest please make contact (after school hours) with Alicia (mother of Savannah) on or Rachel (mother of Lucille) on

Kind Regards, Rachel

Geelong Lutheran College

It was my pleasure to speak to our Primary School students during this week about “surprises.” There are good surprises and some not so good surprises. As much as we can try to control our circumstances, there are some things that are beyond us. However, knowing that God has knowledge over all things, that God cares for us and helps us (Mt. 10:29-30) is a great reassurance - we don’t have to be a “victim” of our circumstances.

Congratulations to our Middle and Senior School students who competed against other schools from the Western Christian Schools Sporting Association. Although the final scores from yesterday are not yet collated, the anecdotal reports speak volumes about our students’ participation and sportsmanship. Well done to our students, and thank you to Mr Baker for his organisation of this day.

On campus, it was similarly busy with Year 6 students from St John’s joining our Year 6 students for a day of transitioning into Middle Schooling. I was particularly impressed with the way students from each school worked together with the positive, working atmosphere in the classes. Thank you to Mrs Quirk and our Middle School teachers for their involvement in these activities.

As a reminder, no classes are scheduled for Thursday and Friday this week while our teachers are involved in staff development days. This time will also give a chance for those students suffering from the winter colds and sniffles to rest and be ready for next week. Looking ahead to our calendar, our last Open Morning for the year will be held on Friday, August 28 (9:30am to 12:00 Noon). This morning provides prospective parents and students with an excellent opportunity to see the College in action. Please share this date with families you know who may be interested in what GLC has to offer for their children.

Clothing Donation Request

My name is Rachel and I am the mother of Lucille who is currently in Year 4 at St John’s. I am part of the Gateways Support Services Respite Team, where we assist children and adults with various forms of disabilities and their families.

I would like to focus this special request to our St Johns families as we are in need of some clothing assistance, for a young female client of Gateways Support Services. This particular client is aged 10, but is quite tall and is developing into a young lady. The client would welcome donations of clothing suitable for now being winter and heading into the season of spring. Preferably Size 14 (children’s / girls sizing). If you do have any suitable & clean second hand girls’ clothing, could you place into a clean shopping bag and either hand to the School Office over the next week (till 20th August), where I can collect from, otherwise if it’s easier, please feel welcome to drop into Gateways Support Services located at 10 – 12 Albert Street, Geelong West (opposite the old Geelong West Town Hall).

Thanking you in advance.
