TEX MURPHY (YEAR 7)

The tension that can occur between our personal rights and freedoms and the needs of the community was brought into focus in Melbourne during Stage 4 restrictions, following the exponential rate of increase of COVID infections occurring early in Term 3.

The health needs of the community required us to wear a mask and restrict our discretionary outdoors time to one hour per day. There was an overnight curfew. All restrictions that most would not have expected in their lifetime!

At times the needs and rights of the community will outweigh our own personal preferences and rights. This is an important learning which we emphasise at Emmanuel. Whether it is wearing the uniform correctly, respecting others at all times, or following the timetable and expectations that may not suit everyone all the time. These are all for the greater good of the Emmanuel community but can be constricting for some.

At the same time, it is important to not constrain individual freedom and opportunities any more than needed for the good of our Emmanuel community. Keeping that balance right is tricky but essential for the young men of the College to achieve their personal best.

ReflectionPRINCIPAL’S

On Saturday 12 September the College held its first Virtual Information Morning. Prospective families heard from student leaders, parents and the College Principal. They also had the opportunity to speak to our students in breakout sessions.

Please note that the closing date for applications for enrolment in Year 7, 2022 has been extended by Catholic Education Melbourne until 9 October, 2020. It is essential, even if you already have a child or children at the College, that you submit an application if you have another child due to start Year 7 in 2022.

Year 12Hoodies

Year 7, 2022Enrolment Closure

Each year the Year 12s work together to decide on an article of clothing or other commemorative piece: this item is normally given to the cohort at the beginning of Term 4. In early Term 3, the Leadership Team decided that the students be provided with their hoodies before they re-entered remote learning. The Year 12s have shown siginificant resilience in supporting each other in a year that continues to throw challenges at them. Receiving their hoodies brought many smiles to their faces.

On Thursday 3 September we welcomed fathers, grandfathers, and other special men to our extended Homeroom.

In the session we shared a prayer, our gratitude to our dads and talked about what we intended to do on Father’s Day.

We also shared this video which showcases why we love our fathers/ father figures and their importance to us. This video features some of our Student Leaders and was created by Luke Dimitriou (Year 12).

Father’s DayHomeroom Session

Between Monday 17 to Friday 21 August, we celebrated Science Week. Our Science Department gave out daily jokes and fun facts. The Science teachers created a virtual escape room for our students to participate in. The room, called Deep Blue, placed students in a submarine, hunting for a colossal squid that has never before been seen by humans. The submarine loses power and the students need to solve the clues to restart the generator before they run out of air. We had a winner from each year level. The overall winner was Seth Colquhoun (NDC – Year 8).

Year 7 HPECooking Healthy

As part of the Year 7 HPE Nutrition Unit, our students were set the task of cooking a healthy breakfast, lunch or dinner at home. Some of our students created an original recipe while others decided to use the cookbook. A range of foods were submitted by our students. Congratulations to the Year 7s on their choices and the Masterchef quality food they produced.

RUOK?DayOn Thursday 10 September the College marked RUOK? Day which is recognised across Australia and very much supported at the College. Students changed their ZOOM background colour to yellow and also wore a splash of the colour. Who will you be checking in with? At Emmanuel College RUOK? Day is every day: if you have any issues you wish to discuss, seek a trusted friend, adult or a staff member at the College.

Virtual LibraryActivitiesEvery year in Term 3 both campuses come together to participate in the LEGO Masters Competition. This year the competition was run remotely. We had many creative submissions and it was difficult for our judges (Ms Derrig, Ms Lever, Mr Gray and Mr Martin) to choose a winner each week. Every week there was a different theme including robots, rooms, bring a book to life and science. It was wonderful to

We were thrilled to have Will Kostakis join us for an author visit via Zoom on Wednesday 2 September. Will is an Australian award-winning author and journalist who regaled us with his stories of how he received a cease and desist letter from Arnold Schwarzenegger, embarrassed himself on national television during his first interview, and had his first novel published whilst still in high school.

Will very kindly offered amazing advice for our budding writers and shared some wonderful tips on his writing process and recommended some great novels for our students to enjoy. We hope to have Will visit us in person next year.

ACC ReportIt’s not just about sport

Even though Term 3 looked different this year the ACC – Associated Catholic Colleges – ran multiple events for our students to participate in.

On Wednesday 19 August our Year 10 students Patrick Ambrose, Taj Adhial, Samuel Kennedy and Jake Cutajar represented the College at the ACC Debating Competition. Congratulations to the boys in finishing second place by an extremely narrow two points in the Intermediate Division. Jake as team captain showed excellent leadership and was named ‘Best Speaker’ in the final deciding round.

On Thursday 20 August, seventeen of our Year 8 – 12 students participated in the online ACC Open Chess Tournament. Congratulations to our students in winning the Division Two ACC Open Chess Competition. Chess itself requires problem solving, strategic thinking and patience, this was even more challenging as the game was conducted online. The top players of the College were Lachlan Brearley (Year 10) and Martin La (Year 12) winning six out of seven games.

ACC organised a running challenge during the term. Students had to log the kilometers they ran each week. Connor Brown (Year 12) was

the overall individual leader for Week 1 of the challenge. During the term Connor ran 152.79km.

In the last few weeks of term our students participated in the ACC Sport Knowledge Challenge. This challenge tested participants in predicting the winner for upcoming sports and events from around the world. Some of our students who were in the top 5 weekly entrants include Logan Cheung (Year 8), Zach Collyer (Year 8), Coby Smith (Year 9), Jake Cutajar (Year 10), Adnan Taleb (Year 10), Benjamin Denninson (Year 11), Joshua Jedretich (Year 11), James Callaway (Year 12) and Eli Stefos (Year 12). Congratulations to Kristian Mihos (Year 12) who came in the top 10 on the overall leaderboard.

It was great to see many of our students actively participate in these extra-curricular activities.

postponed until 2021.

While the opportunity to catch up with old friends and reminisce, as well as see the changes that have occured at the school is inviting, ensuring people are safe is more important in these uncertain times.

We look forward to inviting these groups to a combined reunion in 2021.
