Term 2 Week 6 2020 NEWSLETTER Principal’s Report - 5 June 2020 Return to School We are very pleased to see our students back at school after the long absence with most working from home. Students have settled in well and have enjoyed seeing each other and learning together again. Staff are looking at ways to make the most of the new skills we have all developed in online learning and technologies and incorporating them into regular classroom practice. While things are not completely back to normal at school, with no excursions and limitations in the sports and activities we can run, school feels very close to what it was like prior to this situation. We have ample supplies of hygiene products and frequent cleaning of high traffic areas to support a safe learning environment at school. Laptop devices and BYOD Part of our response to the COVID-19 situation was to loan out school laptops to a number of students to support their learning online from home. We wanted to maintain the loaned devices with students for the first few weeks of returning to full time school to ensure a smooth transition. We now request that loaned laptops are returned to the school over the next week so we can refill our laptop trolleys for full use in classes. The only exception will be students in Years 11 and 12 – they may hold on to their loaned devices for a little longer, to support the impending HSC and Preliminary deadlines. One of the positive aspects of the last few months is the increased number of students with access to their own devices. While the school maintains a number of laptops and desktop computers for use in lessons, we also have the desire to move to more BYOD. This allows students to use their own technology in all classes, as well as when they are at home. One way that we have supported this is through the provision of more lockers at school. These allow students to have a safe place to store their laptops (and other equipment) when they are not needed. We have had a great uptake in hiring lockers, and still have a number available for hire. HSC timetable The Department of Education and NESA have made the decision to put back the final day at school to Monday 19th of October, with examinations starting on Tuesday 20th October. This will change the usual process for the end of the Year 12 year including dates for the Year 12 farewell assembly (if restrictions ease to allow assemblies to run) and a possible shift in the dates for Trial HSC examinations. We will keep you informed when we have more information. Year 7-11 reports Year 7 – 11 reports will have an altered format for this first half of the year, following recommendations by the Department of Education on responses to the changed learning situation over the last few months. The main changes and considerations are: no student will be disadvantaged for learning undertaken from home each student will be assessed in at least one learning outcome, depending on the data staff have that supports that outcome – some students may be assessed using different outcomes to others continued next page 1 Crown Street, Crookwell 2583 T: (02) 4832 1421 F: (02) 4832 1966 E: [email protected] W: www.crookwell-h.schools.nsw.edu.au Keep informed with our app! Deputy Principal’s ReportSchools are central, stabilising forces across communities that provide safe spaces for children and young adults to be in times of crisis, need and change. The effects of COVID-19 may be felt by Australian children and young adults over the coming days and months. Parents, carers and teachers have an important role to play in creating a sense of calm, and reassuring children and young adults, but sometimes it can be difficult to know where to start. Making your own mental health a priority as well as familiarising yourself with the support and services available are good first steps. Please talk to our school about the resources available to you and your family. You may not need help now but you may need it later in the year. A list of support services and resources follows.Lifeline Australia is a crisis support service that provides short-term support at any time for people who are having difficulty coping or staying safe. 13 11 14 | www.lifeline.org.auKids Helpline is a free, private and confidential phone and online counselling service for young people aged 5 to 25 years. 1800 55 1800 | www.kidshelpline.com.auBeyond Blue is available by phone or online via chat or email, to provide support on a range of mental health issues. 1300 22 4636 | www.beyondblue.org.au

Principal’s Report continued

• no overall grade (A-E) will be published as students will not all have the same outcomes• comments will focus on work done and ways to move forward since returning to school• there will be no position/rank information on the reports or available for parents to request, again due to different outcomes making such comparisons impossible• the timeline for the publication of reports will be delayed by approximately two weeks to allow staff time to gather quality data to inform reports.

Please do not hesitate to contact the school with any questions about the revised structures and timelines.
