Glenquarry Public School Newsletter - Issue 9—Thursday 20 June 2019 ________________________________________________________________________________________________ Valuing The FuturePrincipals Message Dear Parents & Carers, The term has flown by with the end of Week 8 already upon us. Preparations are already underway for the End of Term Assembly and World Food Day on the last day of term – Friday July 5. The last fortnight has been quite busy with the Athletics Carnival last Thursday and a trip to Colo Vale PS yesterday for a number of 3-6 students to attend the Festival of Instrumental Music recorder cluster rehearsal. A reminder that tickets for the Mimosa Concert go on sale next Thursday (June 27) at 9:00am. Parent/Teacher Interviews have commenced with a number of parents taking the opportunity to discuss the progress of their children with class teachers. If you havent been able to make a time as yet but wish to make an appointment, please see your childs teacher or call by the office. This week, Mr Southwell was excited to recommence teaching the 3-6 class. He will continue to take the class from Monday to Wednesday until the end of the term. I will also lend a hand from time to time. Have a great fortnight everyone! Gray Athletics Carnival Our students participated in the Bong Bong PSSA Athletics Carnival last Thursday at Eridge Park. All children were enthusiastic participants and did Glenquarry PS proud with their efforts and achievements. Well done to all students who attended and thanks to the many parents and family members who came along to lend their support. Thanks also to Mrs OConnor, Ms Leighton-Daly, Mrs Willis, Mrs Pertout and Mr Southwell for their hard work on the day to ensure the carnival ran smoothly. Congratulations to the Glenquarry students who placed 1 st , 2 nd or 3 rd in their events. Many of these students will be representing Bong Bong PSSA at the District Athletics Carnival which will be held in Week 3 of next term (Friday 9 August). Art Exhibition I had the pleasure of attending the opening of the Refugee Week Art Exhibition last Friday evening at the Wingecarribee Council Chambers in Moss Vale. The exhibition is being held to raise awareness of the plight of refugees around the world. Our K-2 students contributed artworks to the exhibition which are display until Friday 28 June. Thanks to Mrs OConnor for organising our participation in the exhibition. To show their appreciation of our participation in the exhibition, the organisers have donated these two books to Glenquarry PS which will be shared with each class then placed in the school library. 3-6 Class 3-6 have continued their research on PNG culture and have been using craft skills to create some representations of PNG wildlife. In Mathematics the students have spent time working on length with Mr Southwell. The class has continued to enjoy learning a number of AFL skills during Friday sport. Preparations are under way for World Food Day with the students forming groups, choosing countries that they will focus on and designing posters that will be used on the day. Regards, Mr Ryan 3-6 Class

K-2 News What a busy two weeks we have had! I am delighted to report that our K-2 class party was a resounding success last Monday. In line with our recent work on the learning pit and deep learning, we had to work together to solve some challenges before finding the treasure.

Travis: Our class had a class party and we went on a rocky road and across the crocodiles and the lava pit and quicksand and then we went through a maze in the classroom to get to our treasure. Our treasure was morning tea and lunch and recess.

Oscar: I had two favourite parts, the lava volcano and the rocky road.

Hugh: When we went down to the classroom we had to go through a maze to get to the rainbow mat. Bede was first and he said "Wow! Look at this!"

Emery: I liked the food. My favourite was the strawberries dipped in chocolate.

The Athletics carnival was also a resounding success, how lovely to see so many proud Glenquarry faces standing up with their ribbons at the end of the day! Even more lovely to see was everyone trying their hardest, whether they came first, second, third or last. Well done on your enthusiastic participation Glenquarry.

In literacy we are moving ahead in leaps and bounds in all areas. It's around this time that you can really see things starting to click in for the children and see them applying what they have learnt to move forward whether it be reading, writing or speaking and listening. Well done kids, keep up the great work! In numeracy we have started applying our understanding of multiplication and division to look at fractions, and in turn how we can apply our knowledge of fractions to help us tell the time. We have made our own clocks and are working towards telling the time on the hour, the half hour and the quarter hour. For theme, we have been working hard to complete our PNG presentations, learning a lot of new skills along the way (such as organising information, searching for images, copying and pasting, teamwork, just to name a few!) We are also starting to plan our menu offering for World Food Day - we're very excited!

If you have a spare minute over the next week, pop in to the Council Chambers. The small schools of Glenquarry, Kangaloon, Avoca and Burrawang have provided artworks based on books they have read about refugees which have been put together as an exhibition for Refugee Week by RARSH (Rural Australians for Refugees Southern Highlands). What a wonderful way to start our children thinking about the plight of others not so fortunate as ourselves. Nicole O'Connor
