Term 2 Week 4 Thursday 24 May 2018 Training of Staff Last week on Tuesday and Wednesday, we had 10 staff attend what I believe to be very important training in AVID. AVID stands for Advancement via Individual Determination. This basically means equipping students to be responsible for their own learning. Not just expecting them to be responsible but teaching them skills they can use now and in the future to maximise their learning. This includes things like good organisation, notetaking and revising notes and many things I know I was never taught at school but instead had to learn for myself as I went on to high school and university. It also includes many other things we are passionate about at Gwandalan such as goal setting, growth mindset, reading, writing, collaboration and creativity. Staff will continue training in this area and you will hear more about it in the future. Library Refurbishment If you have been around the school you will have seen that we have had the old OOSH building and some classrooms painted and the library has been painted, recarpeted and had the partition pulled out. We are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our new furniture which should arrive today. We will be creating a new modern and innovative learning space in the library that should be very attractive and inspiring for our students. Preschool Update We have received enough surveys to move forward with the idea of establishing a preschool in the old OOSH building. At this stage we are exploring the idea of either the OOSH committee and/or the P&C running the preschool. It is early days in our plans and money will be required so there is no firm decision at this time. If OOSH and/or P&C do not decide to manage it, it will go to tender for a private person to run it. Reports and Interviews Reports will come home for all students in the last week before the holidays (week beginning 1st July). Information will be sent out for Parent/Teacher interviews early next term. All interviews will be held during week 4 next term (week beginning 12 th August). Education Week Education Week is in week 3 next term (Tuesday 6 th August). We are planning a special award ceremony and open classrooms. Visit from Roosters!

On Tuesday 11th June the Sydney Roosters visited our School and spoke to our students about bullying. We know from experience that students listen when NRL players visit the classroom and if our players can help provide them with some tools to combat bullying then hopefully we can make a positive difference to their lives. If students are equipped with the skills to deal with bullying from a young age, as well as being taught the harmful effects that bullying can have, hopefully one day every student will feel safe at school and online. The most important lesson in dealing with bullying is to speak out against it and that is exactly what the NRL is encouraging students to do.

It is amazing what people can achieve through positive affirmation and having our NRL players deliver that message is also a powerful tool.

Bullying can occur in so many forms and at so many levels. There is no place for bullies, on or off the football field.

GRIP LEADERSHIP

GRIP Leadership was a fun and interactive day off learning the qualities of a leader (confidence with humility, others focused, reliability and empathy.) There were lots of activities and we learned socialize with other schools. We learnt how we can make our schools better and include other people's ideas. We learnt that being a leader isn’t about position or power it’s about people. It taught us to be more confident when we are talking. We focused on using our strengths and building our weaknesses. We learned to contribute to the less enjoyable activities and to influence the culture of our school. Overall it was a fun day learning how to develop our leadership skills and to use them at school.
