Term 2, Week 3 www.northstar-p.schools.nsw.edu.au 16th May 2018 Learning To Live Kindness, Respect and Responsibility teachers to discuss the report throughout Week 9 if required. Mr Newton will be on leave during Week 10. Warm regards, Kelly Jesser. What’s On in K/1/2 In K/1/2 we have been learning about diversity in our friendships and have recognised that we can form friendships with others even if we have different interests or personalities. We have been studying the text Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley and relating the text to our own friendship experiences. Students were asked to reflect on their own personalities and came up with some very interesting adjectives to describe themselves including dreamy, funny, happy, caring, kind, thoughtful, respectful, crazy and friendly. It is so rewarding to see students developing their love of reading through exploring rich texts in class. Keep up the fabulous work K/1/2. Ms Kelly Jesser What’s happening in 3/4/5/6 Term 2 is off to a flying start in the 3/4/5/6 classroom. All students have settled back in our routine very well and have shown lots of enthusiasm towards their learning. Last week our 5/6 kids were off to the GRIP Leadership Conference in Moree. The students involved all learnt lots about transforming themselves into leaders and being the stimulus for change back at school. Back in class, Year 3 and 4 students have been hard at work staring our new units of work for Term 2, 2018. Thank you to all Parents/Carers that attended Ms Jesser and my informational meeting last week and I hope after that and the term overview letter that went home, everyone is up to date with our Term 2 program. This week Year 3 and 5 students will be sitting the annual NAPLAN tests from Tuesday to Thursday. We have been busy reviewing past papers and practicing how to sit for a formal assessment over the past two weeks. Our whole class will be attending a wonderful interactive VC conference on Friday to learn about the Parliament of NSW. Mr Zac Newton. Principal Report Thank you to the many parents who were able to attend our recent Parent Information sessions last week. If you were unable to attend and would like to make an alternative time to meet with either myself, Mr Newton or Mrs Nixon, please do not hesitate to email or phone the front office to make an appointment time. We look forward to continuing to build a strong continuity between home and school through regular communication. Whilst the days are still nice and warm, the cooler mornings are certainly upon us. Please ensure that students are either wearing their jumpers or jackets on arrival at school, or have these in their bags if needed. A reminder that as part of our Sun safety guidelines, students will not be permitted to play in the sun if they are not wearing a hat during break times. It is pleasing to see so many students at NSPS actively displaying our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Kindness and Safety. The teachers are currently working on ways to revitalise the ways in which these are celebrated across the school, to ensure that our values remain a part of our day to day, core business at school. In the interest of student safety, staff have collectively made the decision that changes to playing arrangements in the playground will now mean that Years K/1/2 are to play together, Years 4-6 are to play together, and Year 3 will have the option to choose either group. This decision has been made to ensure that younger students are not playing more robust games with the older students in an effort to reduce the risk of injury. A parent satisfaction survey was provided recently at both the P&C meeting and Parent Information sessions. Please return completed surveys to class teachers or the front office by Friday 25th May. Please be advised that Mid-year academic reports will be sent home on Monday of Week 9, to allow the opportunity for parents and carers to meet with North Star Public School Kindness, Respect and Responsibility

North Star Public School Kindness, Respect and Responsibility

North Star School Cross Country 2018 Wednesday 2 May, the students from North Star School walked over to the North Star club, the site of the school cross country. There was excitement in the air as the children readied themselves to take on the challenge of the cross country course. Prior to running the course students and parents walked the course, some enjoying the freedom of a leisurely stroll while others took serious note of any pitfalls on the track to increase their success when running the course. All students put in a fantastic effort in their races, their morning runs at school paying off. Congratulations to all students, I was especially impressed to see everyone having a real “go”. For the first time ever, every North Star student competed in the Cross Country event. We had no sickness or students on leave. Well done! The results: Minor Girl Champion: Sophie McMaster Minor Boy Champion: Enzo Van Heerden Junior Girl Champion: Annabel McMaster Junior Boy Champion: Sam Doolin Senior Boy Champion: Dante Van Heerden

Macintyre Cross Country 2018 Breaking News! At this very moment North Star School students are in possession of every trophy available to them as a whole school in the Moree Zone. The students have won both the aggregate and handicap Macintyre Swimming trophies, the Mckechnie Shield, and on Friday the students brought home the Macintyre Cluster Cross Country “Alex Woodbridge Shield” (for the Aggregate winners) and the Handicap Shield. We are also still in possession of the Heferen Shield for Athletics 2017. This is an awesome effort especially with our decreased numbers. Well done everyone!

Friday was cold and windy but that did not deter our contingent of cross country runners or the generous parents who transport children and who help out at these special events, without you these events would not be possible. The Tulloona School Community was our generous host for the event. The Community should be very proud of their little school, it was looking fantastic and it was a very pleasant environment to visit even with the cold and the wind. As always our students put in a very good performance and had a very successful day. The Results: Minor Boys Champion: Enzo Van Heerden Minor Girls Champion: Sophie McMaster Junior Boys Champion: Sam Doolin Junior Girls Champion: Emere Lazarus, 2nd Annabel McMaster Senior Boys Champion: Dante Van Heerden, 2nd Sam Durkin, 3rd Tom Durkin Congratulations to all 20 student who attended the Macintyre Cross Country you are all responsible for bringing home both the Handicap and the aggregate trophies.

Northern North West Cricket Trials. Dante Van Heerden and Sam Durkin participated in these trails for selection in the North West team. North West Cricket Trials Dante Van Heerden competed at the North West cricket trials on Monday and while not selected he played very well. Congratulations Dante!

The Moree Zone Cross Country A reminder to all students who are 8 years of age or older you have at least one more cross country to run. This year the Moree Zone Cross Country will be held here in North Star at the North Star Sporting Club on Monday 28th May 2018. Our School is allowed to enter 6 students in each event and it is on a school day so all of our eligible students will be running. This is a big event for our community so we will need all hands on deck. Kindergarten, Year 1 and any 7 year olds from Year 2 will attend school as usual on that day and have their normal school routine. There will be no classes at school for Years 3 to 6 as they will be at the Cross Country. We will need as many helpers as possible on the day as we have a track to supervise, finish lines to staff and a canteen to operate. Please contact the school or myself (Mrs Sue Nixon) if you are able to help on the day your assistance will be greatly appreciated. The event would be finished around 1:30pm so it would only be a few hours of your day. Premier Sporting Challenge The children have completed their PSC activity! This year we decided to “run” to Jervis Bay (Mr Newton’s home town) a distance of approximately 950 Km. The students run laps around the school each morning a distance of 410m, every lap the students run is recorded and are totalled up. The children have completed 1150km enough to run to Jervis Bay and go for a short run to the beach and back while there! Well done everyone your running has raised good funds for us to purchase some new sporting equipment. The PSC is a government funded program to encourage children to become fitter and more active. Our “run” to Jervis Bay has definitely improved our children’s fitness especially combining it with all of the sport and physical play our students are involved in out of school, the Cross Country event is a testimony to this.

2018 Grip Leadership Conference Last week all of our Year 5 and 6 students attended the fantastic annual GRIP Leadership Conference in Moree. Each year North Star Public School senior students attend this interactive, fun-filled conference to learn how they can be the source of change in their school. The students involved enjoyed lots of fun activities, writing, listening to speakers and interacting with students from surrounding schools. A big thank you to Mrs Pilar Pertuze for transporting the Year 6 boys to this conference.

P&C News

There will be no finger buns at canteen tomorrow Thursday 17 May.
