We present the 2014 issue of Terberg Special

Vehicles Magazine with pride, especially as it

covers a major milestone and some significant

developments.

25,000 vehicles

We expect to build the 25,000th Terberg

vehicle towards the end of 2014. We built

our first truck in 1966 and the first dedicated

Terberg terminal tractor entered service in the

Port of Rotterdam in 1973. We have travelled

a long road to become a leading international

manufacturer of special vehicles, with

vehicles operating in over 90 countries.

This development is the result of hard work,

the right vision and the support of our

employees, distributors and customers and we

would like to thank everyone who contributed

to it. Our company now has subsidiaries in

the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, Belgium,

Dubai and, most recently, the USA. We also

have a joint venture operation in Malaysia.

Our total workforce in the division Special

Vehicles currently numbers around 600.

New developments

This issue focusses on two new tractor designs.

The DT183LE distribution tractor has a cab

mounted ahead of the front axle, giving a cab

floor height of only 500 mm. The lower entry

will greatly benefit drivers who frequently have

to enter and leave their vehicle and will reduce

the physical stress on them. This development

ties in with our aim of improving ergonomics.

It will also make it easier for older drivers to

keep working. The DT183LE will be presented

to our dealers later this year.

Our new RT model, the RT403 4x4,

was introduced earlier this year and is our

most powerful tractor. It can handle gross

combination weights up to 375 tonnes and has

a fifth-wheel lifting capacity of 45 tonnes.

It is equipped with a Mercedes engine with

an output of 300 kW (402 HP) which complies

with the US EPA Tier 4 Final requirements.

This unit is intended for heavy duty

applications in ports and industry.

The steel industry is a key market where

its power and reliability will be valued.

New companies

To further improve our service to customers

in Belgium we have set up Terberg Tractors

Belgium. The company’s offices and

workshops are based at a 2,700 m² site in

Oostakker, close to Gent. This location is

conveniently close to both the Port of Antwerp

and other North Sea ports.

To serve the North, Central and South

American markets better we have recently set

up Terberg Tractors Americas Inc. Based in

Miami, personnel from this office benefit from

good connections to the whole region.

We hope that you will enjoy this issue of

Terberg Magazine.

LOOKING FORWARD TO VEHICLE NO. 25,000By the end of the year we expect to reach a major milestone in our company’s history: building the 25,000th Terberg vehicle.

It all started after the Second World War

when a blacksmith’s work changed and our

family started converting trucks obtained from

the American army. This was the first step

towards our future as a manufacturer of special

vehicles. We built the first Terberg 6x6 dump

truck in 1966 and in 1973 we delivered our first

terminal tractor to a customer in the Port of

Rotterdam.

From the 1960s through to the early 1990s we

produced around 200 vehicles per year. In the

1990s greater containerization in international

shipping meant that the demand for our

terminal tractors increased and our production

volume grew correspondingly.

In 2000 we set up a joint venture with Sime

Darby in Malaysia to produce Terberg

tractors for the Asian market and the Pacific

region. This local production site enabled

us to reduce transport and labour costs and

our tractors are not subject to import duty.

Production in the region also brought us much

closer to the customers and helped us to build

our market share.

Starting in 2000 we also increased our

international presence by establishing

subsidiaries in the UK, Germany, Belgium,

Dubai and the USA. These subsidiaries and

our network of international distributors have

now supplied Terberg vehicles to over ninety

countries.

We would like to thank our personnel for

their continuing commitment and hard work,

and our distributors for their professional

support. And we would specially like to thank

our customers for the trust they place in our

vehicles and our company

Superior ergonomics: less effort, more efficiency

I N N O V A T I O N A N D D E V E L O P M E N TINTERVIEW - RONALD VAN ZOELEN

YT LOW ENTRY CABOne of the reasons behind the success of our vehicles in the market is that we aim to improve the working environment of the drivers. For example by providing them with a comfortable cab and seat, a good view of the area they are operating in, and many options for customisation. To identify further opportunities for improvement we listen carefully to our customers and study the way they use our vehicles in their operations.

The YT tractors were originally designed for

port applications, but are now also widely used

in other settings such as distribution centres.

In ports, drivers rarely have to leave their cab.

However, at distribution centres drivers have

to leave the cabs frequently: to open the trailer

doors before positioning the trailer at a loading

dock or to operate controls on the trailer. Some

drivers have to climb in and out of their cab a

hundred times in a single working day.

Aware of the growing use of our tractors at

distribution centres, Alisdair Couper, MD of

Terberg DTS, our UK subsidiary, looked for

an opportunity to offer these drivers better

ergonomics. He proposed developing a

distribution tractor with a low-entry cab.

This proposal was welcomed by the designers

at the head office. Their solution was to move

the cab forward, and place it ahead of the

front axle. This made it possible to reduce

the floor level from 1.3 metres to just 0.5

metres above the ground. The new cab has

a flat floor and the driver can exit it on the

left or the right. There is also easy access

to a platform between the tractor’s front

wheels and the trailer. This enables the driver

to connect and disconnect trailer hoses and

SOME DRIVERS HAVE TO CLIMB

cables without climbing onto the higher level

of the chassis. Hence the low-entry cab has

significant health and safety benefits.

Our design engineers set up a team of

specialists for the design and manufacturing

of the cab. They designed new exterior cab

components and adopted some components

originally designed for our latest RoRo

tractors. The team spent around a year on the

design and development of the new vehicle.

To accommodate the low-entry cab they had

to design a completely new air duct to the

the drivers’ work environment as well as

operational efficiency.

radiator and made several other changes to the

standard YT design. The prototype of the new

vehicle, the DT183LE (Distribution Tractor 183

Low-Entry), is now largely completed.

Obviously the DT183LE is longer and has

less ground clearance than an equivalent YT

tractor. However, this is not a disadvantage at

most distribution centres, its target market.

The DT183LE is currently being presented

to our distributors and deliveries will start

in the first half of 2015. Initial customer

reactions have been very favourable and

RT403 industrial tractor

I N D U S T R I A L A P P L I C A T I O N S

Terberg YT, TT and RT tractors are used in many industries for transporting up to 375 tonnes Gross Combined Weight. Here the robustness and reliability of our products are highly valued. The ease of manoeuvring and the swivelling seats on some models are particularly useful when working in crowded yards. These are also valuable when operating inside buildings, where Euro 5 engines are required in some countries. Our standard tractors are supplemented by the RT403 industrial tractor, whose fifth wheel lifting capacity of 45 tonnes is particularly useful in the steel industry. This unit is also used for towing multitrailer trains. Our optional SafeNeck improves the weight distribution between the trailer and the tractor and can increase the load capacity up to 250% when operating on ramps and slopes.

SSABSWEDEN

SSAB is a leading manufacturer of value-

added, high-strength steel, with production

plants in Sweden and the USA and a presence

in 45 countries. SSAB’s products enable their

customers to manufacture lighter and more

energy-efficient products. The company

recently invested in two RT403 units, our

most powerful tractors. They also purchased

a second-hand RT282 industrial tractor. These

vehicles are used for transporting steel slabs

and coils weighing up to 150 tonnes. After

carefully assessing the tractors on the market

SSAB decided that the Terberg units were

the best solution for their application given

the build quality and customer support. Emil

Haglund of SSAB commented: “It’s obvious

that Terberg takes quality and customer support

very seriously. As do SSAB. Our drivers are very

satisfied with the tractors so far.”

P O R T A P P L I C A T I O N S

Terberg RT RoRo tractors (4x4 drive) and YT yard tractors (4x2) are widely used by major port operators worldwide. Their key reasons for choosing Terberg tractors are always the reliability and the low cost of ownership resulting from the high fuel efficiency and reduced maintenance costs. Port operators with heavy RoRo cargo also appreciate the SafeNeck, which considerably increases safety when hauling heavy loads on steep ship’s ramps. We trust that these case studies give you a good idea of the port applications of our tractors.

APMT ALGECIRASSPAIN

APM Terminals operates a Global Terminal

Network with 20,300 employees in 67

countries and has interests in 72 port and

terminal facilities. The company handles over

36 million TEU per year.

APMT Algeciras is a major container

terminal in the south of Spain and one

of APMT’s largest facilities in Europe.

It is perfectly located for transshipment

operations due to its location on the

Mediterranean, close to Atlantic Ocean.

The 67 hectare facility handles around

3.3 million TEU per year, has 19 quay cranes

and can handle container vessels up to

18,000 TEU. Javier Lancha, APMT

Algeciras Managing Director: “Safety,

efficiency, reliability and global synergies

are our commitment. APM Terminals

Algeciras takes great pride in our focus on

customers’ needs.”

Terberg has supplied tractors to other APMT

sites for over 15 years and has a framework

agreement with the company’s head office.

So when the terminal at Algeciras needed

new terminal tractors and invited bids from

a number of manufacturers we were keen to

develop a proposal tailored to their needs.

APMT Algeciras had a number of special

requirements which we could meet by

customising our YT design. One of our

engineers visited the terminal to discuss

the specifications of the new tractors. For

example, the terminal’s stevedores requested

12

13

larger side doors in the cab and we could

meet this requirement by working with our

cab supplier. Another requirement was for an

additional front bumper. This bumper

protects the cab against minor collisions

when a trailer is positioned in front of

a tractor, under a crane. Our engineers

developed a bumper design which met all

requirements. The safety and ergonomics

features of our YTs were a perfect match

for APMT’s strict safety requirements.

All in all, APMT was convinced by our bid

and we concluded a contract for the supply

of 102 YT222 terminal tractors. The delivery

of these units was completed last winter.

As the tractors in the APMT Algeciras fleet

operate around 4000 hours per year, fuel

consumption was an essential component of

the business case. These tractors are fitted

with the latest Cummins Euro 5 engines

which have much lower particulate and NOx

emissions than earlier engine generations

and their fuel consumption is reduced

by approximately 5%. Together with the

fuel savings of approximately 15% due to

Terberg’s standard Fuel Reduction Package

this results in very economical operation

and helps the customer to meet their carbon

reduction objectives.

We are very pleased that we now have

another APMT terminal as one of our

customers.

FLINDERS PORTS AUSTRALIA

Flinders Ports operates seven ports in South Australia and handles a wide range of cargos.

When the company decided to double the bulk material handling capacity at Port Adelaide they

started looking for suitable tractors. The operations require hauling iron ore containers in B-double

configurations (also known as B-train) with a GCW up to 110 tonnes, between the harbour crane,

ship and container stack. The company decided to invest in two YT220 tractors with a maximum

GCW of 150 tonnes, giving them a generous power reserve. This also gives the option of adopting

a super B-double configuration in future for an even higher throughput of iron ore. Flinders Ports

also appreciates the high level of safety and operator comfort provided by the Terberg units.

STENA LINE EUROPE

Stena Line is one of the world’s leading

freight and passenger ferry operators

with a workforce of 6000, and serves

23 destinations in Europe. These include

ports in Scandinavia, Great Britain, Ireland,

Germany, the Netherlands and the Baltic

States. The company is focussing on growth

in freight transport, specifically containers

and unaccompanied trailers. To expand its

route portfolio Stena Line recently acquired

five Baltic Sea freight routes from another

operator. These developments are expected

to significantly increase volume and revenues.

This focus has inspired a new, centralised,

approach to managing their fleet of terminal

tractors, and standardising on one type

to increase efficiency and reduce the

management effort. After a thorough study

to determine the requirements of all their

terminals, Stena Line issued a tender for the

supply of up to 110 tractors. The Total Cost

of Ownership was a key selection criterion.

Following a thorough assessment of the

bids and discussion of numerous details the

company selected Terberg RT223 4x4 RoRo

tractors. These will be supplied to the

14 terminals in Northern Europe under

a framework agreement and there is also

a catalogue of accessories tailored to Stena

Line’s operations. The framework agreement

provides clear information to all the terminals

about the cost of the equipment, to help them

optimise their investment decisions.

Delivery of the first tractors to terminals in

Denmark, Norway and Sweden has already

started. These units are leased from N.C.

Nielsen/Terberg Scandinavia who are

also responsible for servicing them. This

arrangement gives Stena Line complete

certainty about the operating costs.

After that, more RTs will be delivered to the

terminals in the Baltic region, the Netherlands,

the UK and Ireland.

Per Søholt, Operational Group Coordinator,

Stena Line: “We are pleased to enter the new

cooperation with Terberg, who offered the best

platform. Terbergs excellence on tugmasters

will allow us to focus and develop further on

operational excellence in our Port Terminals.”

P&O FERRIES EUROPE

P&O Ferries is one of Europe’s leading ferry

operators. The P&O Ferries North Sea routes

account for hundreds of sailings every week.

The company also operates three busy routes

on the Irish Sea. The RoRo terminals are

combined passengers and freight terminals

and a quick turnaround of the ferries is

essential to keep to the timetable. P&O carries

both accompanied and unaccompanied freight.

P&O operates over 100 Terberg tractors,

including 67 RT282 and RT283 units at the

busy North Sea terminals. These are used

for loading and unloading RoRo ferries at

ports on the North Sea, the Irish Sea and the

Channel. René Lok, Port Technical Manager,

P&O Ferries, is responsible for the

technical facilities at three RoRo terminals

(Europoort, Zeebrugge and Hull),

workshops and equipment such as terminal

tractors, container handling equipment,

stackers, etc. He explained that the P&O

Ferries had chosen Terberg tractors because

of the quality and ergonomics of the units.

operations which involve heavy ramp work.

The tractors are fitted with 240 kW Mercedes

engines and are supported by Terberg’s

distributor in Australia, Clark Equipment.

FJORD LINE NORWAY

Fjord Line operates ferries between Denmark,

Norway and Sweden. The company’s fleet

includes two new LNG-powered superferries.

In view of the expected increase in freight

volumes, especially unaccompanied trailers,

Fjord Line purchased nine 9 Terberg RT223

4x4 RoRo tractors. Each of the new ferries

carries two tractors and the rest are based

at the ports. The units are customised with

special hydraulics for the trailers as well as an

alcohol-lock system. Gert Balling, Managing

Director, Fjord Line: “We have worked with

[distributor] N.C. Nielsen and Terberg for 10

years, and we know what they stand for.”

The company also considered the low noise

level and spacious cabs as important features.

BOLLORÉ AFRICA LOGISTICSAFRICA

Bolloré Africa Logistics, a subsidiary of

the Bolloré group operates in 16 container

terminals, mostly in West and Central Africa.

The company’s roots in Africa go back nearly

a century and with its unrivalled integrated

logistics network it has played its part in the

economic and social development of the

continent. In the past decade Bolloré Africa

Logistics has invested hundreds of millions of

euros in developing these container terminals

and its public/private partnerships. Other

activities include a wide range of logistics

services, including door-to-door services.

Bolloré Africa Logistics has a presence in 55

countries, 47 of them in Africa.

In the past the company used agricultural

tractors for container handling. Around

10 years ago Francetruck, our distributor

in France and French-speaking countries

in West Africa, loaned them a YT tractor

in Abidjan for extensive tests. Mr Lionel

Labarre, Regional Manager for West Africa,

says that the tests were very successful,

and as a result Bolloré Africa Logistics

decided to invest in Terberg tractors for

all of the terminals in which they operate.

He continues and says; “Higher initial cost

was easily offset by the increased reliability,

easier manoeuvring and greater safety.”

Bolloré Africa Logistics now use YT tractors

at all their container terminals and RoRo

terminal and have a fleet of around 300

units operating in Africa.

TME, our subsidiary in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, opened its doors in 2009. Five years on and with over 1000 units delivered and also a healthy spare parts turnover, we asked recently appointed General Manager Andrew Partridge about this success.

“From our office in Dubai, we are responsible

for sales and support in the Middle East region

and also most of Africa. Dubai has excellent

flight connections and makes it easy to visit key

customers in the region.

The number of units delivered in the previous

five years has exceeded our expectations.

The primary goal when we started up was to

be closer to our customers, distributors and

prospects.

We recently added Sharjah Port Authority

to our customer base, they were looking

for a reputable RoRo tractor supplier who

could deliver local after sales support. They

purchased two RT223 tractors. Our excellent

reputation at Gulftainer, also at Sharjah port,

26

and the fact that Terberg is the only terminal

tractor supplier with a spare parts warehouse in

the Middle East region convinced the customer

that this was the best choice. This year we have

seen an increase in orders for 4x4 RT tractors,

in a market where the YTs are generally more

popular. Our order intake for 4x2 YT units has

also been very healthy. For example, Terberg

received large orders from Steinweg in Sohar

(Oman), Borouge (Abu Dhabi) and from DP

World (Jebel Ali) for their new Terminal 3.

With the increased fleet of tractors in the

region, it is also very important to make sure

all the units and customers get the right

attention, especially in the aftermarket.

In recent months we have increased the number

of staff and have also appointed an after sales

manager to ensure our customers receive the

best possible service. Furthermore we have

increased our service support capacity.

Much of our success in the region can be

credited to a high quality product, excellent

aftermarket support and a dedicated,

hard-working team of staff, and building

relationships with our customers. This has

enabled us to improve our service levels

by adjusting to customers’ individual

requirements. Furthermore, our warehouse

can supply most spare parts from stock.

Our network of excellent dealers is also

essential to the sales volume and is based on

honest and open relationships. Essentially,

we view distributors as part of our team.

Local representation is becoming more and

more important in our region, in fact some

customers insist on it. Therefore we will

continue to work with our valued distributors

to ensure the best possible outcome for

all parties.”

Reducing environmental impact and costs

For the foreseeable future most vehicles used in our industry will be powered by diesel engines. However, we are actively investigating the other options and already delivering vehicles for them. In general, the alternative fuels result in lower emissions than diesel and in some markets they can also reduce operating costs.

28

The main alternatives to diesel are:

• Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)

• Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)

• Electricity

LNG

Natural gas can be liquefied by cooling it to

-160°C which greatly increases its density.

Even so, its energy content per litre is lower

than that of diesel, so a larger, highly-insulated

tank is required. In some markets, LNG is

already an economical alternative to diesel fuel

and also burns much more cleanly, with much

lower particulate and NOx emissions. We first

supplied an LNG tractor for the Green Cranes

project in 2013, which proved the concept.

In our experience so far, the maintenance needs

of LNG engines are similar to those of diesel

engines, though they also have spark plugs

which occasionally need changing. When an

LNG vehicle is not in use for a few days the tank

will slowly warm up and vent gas. This requires

appropriate measures in workshops, etc. and

we can advise on these. Obviously, the local

requirements for dealing with this fuel will also

have to be considered. We are currently using

320 litre LNG tanks which require a minimum

tractor wheelbase of 3.5 metres.

CNG

In some markets, CNG is more easily available

than LNG. However, the compressed gas

requires a larger tank than liquefied gas. Hence

this option is normally only used with longer

vehicles where the tank can be accommodated

between the chassis beams. The YT/CC222-

4x2 container carrier supplied to Omrin for

a waste processing plant in the North of the

Netherlands is a good example.

ELECTRIC VEHICLES

We introduced the all-electric YT202-EV in

2013. This design is now thoroughly tested

and has an optimised driveline with the same

performance as an equivalent diesel vehicle.

It can operate for a full shift and recharges

relatively quickly and can also receive a top-up

charge during drivers’ breaks. This makes it

particularly suitable for distribution centres,

where the zero emissions are also an attractive

feature when operating inside buildings.

The expected battery life is five to seven years,

which corresponds to the normal replacement

cycle of these vehicles in case they are used

24/7. Our EV tractors are now in use with a

number of customers, such as Ikea distribution

centres in the Netherlands and Germany.

The initial costs of these tractors are relatively

high, but the electricity they consume is

cheaper than diesel and they also have lower

maintenance requirements.

At Terberg we always listen to our customers

to identify their needs. This has enabled us to

develop experience with alternatives to diesel

fuel. Alternatives which can benefit both the

environment and our customers’ bottom line.

S H I F T I N G PA R C E L S B Y T H E T H O U S A N D STerberg YT yard tractors (4x2) are used as shunters (tugs) at many distribution centres where they have proven themselves to be more appropriate for trailer shunting than conventional road tractors. For example, they have an optimised driveline and gearbox, while their lifting fifth wheel saves time as trailers can be shunted without raising the landing legs. The high reliability and fuel efficiency of Terberg units come to the fore in these applications where they often have to work around the clock. Where permitted by local regulations, some operators also use these tractors for short trips on public roads. Operators using swap bodies appreciate the Terberg BC body carrier; it not only handles swap bodies very efficiently but can also tow semitrailers and drawbar trailers.

KLOK CONTAINERS ROTTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS

Klok Containers has more than forty years’

experience in waste disposal and recycling

and is part of the Shanks Group which handles

over five million tonnes of waste annually.

The company uses a Terberg YT/CC222

container carrier for handling containers at its

site. The unit is fitted with a VDL hooklift.

Edwin Kolk, Manager Operations, Containers:

“We use the container carrier for onsite

operations and positioning 40 m³ bins with

a length of 7 metres. We opted for Terberg

because of our good experience with

two other units they supplied to us.

The ergonomic cab and other features

simply make this container carrier the best

choice for our operations. It is also fitted

with a system to fix a net over the bins.”

BEHALAGERMANY

The company provides container and bulk

handling services in ports as well as local

delivery. Behala tested a YT202-EV last year

and recently purchased one of these units.

Our tractor is used for delivering ISO containers

and bulk goods in Berlin, within a radius of

10 km from Behala’s intermodal terminal.

It is fitted with a hydraulic powerpack to

operate tipping semitrailers used for delivering

bulk coffee to a roaster. They appreciate the

reliability of our tractors and consider Terberg

to be a professional partner.

Behala made this investment as the company

wanted to use an electric vehicle for the last

part of the supply chain. The Terberg YT202-

EV proves that heavy loads can be handled in

urban traffic by emission-free vehicles. This

project is supported by the Berlin Agency for

Electromobility (eMO) and Wildau Technical

University. The objective is to convert the

entire supply chain, from the shipper to the

end customer, to electro-mobility (Electric

Chain Concept). In future, eMO will install

a solar charging system at Behala’s terminal

for true zero-emissions mobility.

FOWLER WELCHUK

Fowler Welch is a leading provider of supply

chain services for ambient and temperature-

controlled products, with nine depots across

the UK. Like Terberg, they place people at

the centre of the organisation. We recently

supplied 12 YT182 tractors to Fowler Welch

under a five-year hire contract. The YTs

are customised with features such as night

heating, extra 5th wheel controls, a training

seat and a Haldex soft docking system which

operates the trailer brakes automatically.

We delivered the trailers to each depot where

we also provided training.

Paul Allera, Head of Fleet, Fowler Welch:

“Our national distribution centre for chilled

products in Spalding is home to over 200 trailers

that generally require in excess of 5000 lifts per

week from the on-site shunters. The overall

package put together by Terberg was superb,

their approach to our business was really

flexible and understanding, and they showed

a real willingness to support us, not just from

day one but through a proven after sales service

for the full contract duration.”

LINFOX AUSTRALIA

Linfox is one of Australia’s largest logistics

and transport companies and operates a fleet

of over 25 Terberg tractors. Their most recent

purchase was two YT220 tractors fitted with

Cummins Euro5 engines. These vehicles are

road-legal and comply with the Australian

Design Rules (ADR). One of the units is a

4x2 model used at the company’s distribution

centre outside Sydney. The other one is a 6x4

model used with B-doubles (B-trains) at a

large bakery which produces over 200 tons

of biscuits every day. With a GCW of 70 tons

this unit is the most powerful ADR-compliant

yard tractor available in Australia and has a top

speed of 80 km/h.

Linfox has used Terberg tractors since 2007

and these now account for most of their yard

tractor fleet. Recently the company also

invested in a TT223 terminal tractor.

The company’s 30 drivers handle over 1000

load transfers per day at 650 loading docks,

working in three shifts.

LDI has six BC182 swap body carriers and

six YT182-DT tractors with SCR and AdBlue

systems. Two second-hand body carriers are

available for peak periods. The vehicles are

used for handling containers, semitrailers

and swap bodies. LDI: “We selected

these vehicles because of their power and

efficiency, reliability, quality and service.”

The company’s drivers are very happy

with the vehicles because of their good

ergonomics, while the company’s accountants

value the low fuel consumption. LDI also

mentioned the effective cooperation

between them, their client IKEA and Terberg-

Nordlift. Terberg also trained all drivers and

the local service partner.

The vehicles have wireless data terminals

which present optimised routing instructions

to the drivers. LDI place great emphasis on

safety and the trucks of external transport

ZEPPELIN POWER SYSTEMS GERMANY

Zeppelin produces advanced generator

sets with ratings from 10 kW to 17 MW and

is a market leader in the marine generator

industry. These units weigh up to 65 tonnes,

with dimensions up to 12 x 3 x 4 metres. Until

recently Zeppelin assembled units up to 25

tonnes on roller pallets which were moved

around the factory with fork lift trucks.

Larger units were assembled on road trailers.

This approach had some disadvantages in terms

of capacity and manoeuvrability. Zeppelin

carefully considered the options and decided

to invest in a RT223 4x4 industrial tractor and

TTS Liftec cassette lifter (Translifter).

This combination makes it much easier to

move generator sets weighing up to 85 tonnes

around the plant and offers both a high weight

capacity and good manoeuvrability. The tractor

can also handle goosenecks. Using the tractor

and Translifter, which can also weigh the loads,

with a number of cassettes greatly simplifies

the logistics within the plant. The drivers

received a one-day training course to introduce

them to their new handling equipment.

As they were unfamiliar with this technology,

Zeppelin studied this investment in detail

and visited reference customers to see

Terberg tractors in operation. As a top-level

engineering company they appreciated

the high quality of our tractors. They also

discussed their application in depth with

Terberg-Nordlift, our local subsidiary,

and valued the knowledgeable advice they

received. Zeppelin chose the RT223 because

of its reliability, quality and performance.

HANGARTNER TERMINAL S.R.L.ITALY

The company, acquired by DB Schenker

Logistics & Mobility AG in 2002, has over 120

years’ experience in intermodal transport and

is also a specialist in road transport along the

European North-South axis. Hangartner has its

own railway terminal with 17,500 pallet spaces

Terberg-Nordlift also supplied the Translifter

and will service it in future, giving Zeppelin

a single point of contact.

Zeppelin managers and operational personnel

were pleasantly surprised by the improved

transport speed, ease of use, manoeuvrability

and reliability. They also mentioned the

effective cooperation between themselves,

Terberg-Nordlift and TTS Liftec, the suppliers

of the Translifter system.

price, fuel consumption and reliability. This

unit was supplied by Manuport, Terberg’s

distributor in Italy.

34

T E R B E R G D T S U K SPECIAL

Terberg’s UK subsidiary was originally set up as Distribution Tractor Services in 1998 by Alisdair Couper (currently Managing Director) and Duncan Stewart. The company’s portfolio included Terberg tractors as well as aircraft ground support equipment. Two years later, DTS became a Terberg subsidiary and is now UK leader in specialist vehicles for several market sectors. Terberg DTS also supplies specialist Seacom trailers, firefighting vehicles and Terberg Kinglifter truck-mounted fork lift trucks, and operates a busy service and repair depot. The company operates one of the largest specialist vehicle hire fleets in the UK supporting the logistics, industrial, aviation and military sectors.

Alisdair is convinced that the company’s

success is due to its team and their flexibility

in looking after their customers: “Let’s ensure

that the product is maintained properly, highly

reliable and when there is a problem get it

back to work as quickly as possible. To meet

the changing needs of our customers we must

always be prepared to ask questions, push

boundaries and challenge historical methods

and processes. Without doing this we would

stop growing, developing and innovating.”

TERBERG TRACTORS

In a relatively short time, Terberg DTS has

managed to make Terberg tractors a familiar

sight in ports and distribution centres

throughout the UK and Ireland. For example,

the Port of Felixstowe, the largest container

handling port in the UK, operates close to 200

YT and RT terminal tractors. Some of these

units have been in service for over 14 years,

clocking up over 50,000 operating hours with

the original drive trains, and will be replaced

by new Terberg tractors later this year.

Richard Ambler of the Terberg DTS parts

department: “Reliability is key to the

success of the Felixstowe operation.

Terberg DTS service and parts supply has

played a significant role in ensuring that the

company has now become one of the top-

listed ‘approved suppliers’ to The Port of

Felixstowe.”

Terberg tractors are also widely used at

distribution centres such as those operated

by Tesco, Sainsbury, Ford and Fowler Welch.

MIAMI

Ron van Arkel, TTA’s Vice-President, has

extensive export experience. In the past he was

area sales manager for the Americas, amongst

other regions, based at our head office in the

Netherlands. More recently, he set up and

managed Terberg Middle East, our successful

subsidiary in Dubai. TTA is located in Miami,

which has excellent connections to many Latin

American countries, the Carribean as well

as Canada and the rest of the US. The new

subsidiary will work with Terberg’s existing

distributor network in these countries.

PRODUCT RANGE

TTA will offer our full range of tractors, with

a special focus on heavy RoRo tractors and

tractors for demanding industrial applications.

Of course, they will also be able to advise on

Terberg’s most recent developments such

as LNG-powered tractors and vehicles with

low-entry cabs. We trust that the extensive

customisation options will be as popular in the

Americas as they are elsewhere in the world,

and distinguish us from the competition.

CUSTOMISED

TTA also supplies customised trailers for heavy

industrial applications. For example, we have

supplied special 200-tonne scrap bucket trailers

for use with our RT382 heavy industrial tractors

operating at a steelworks in Alabama, US.

Currently, some 75 Terberg YT terminal

tractors are used in ports in Brazil. Robert

Transport in Canada has a number of YT

distribution centre tractors with two and

three axles which are fully customised for

their application and local requirements.

We recently supplied RT heavy industrial

tractors operate to a steelworks in Peru to

replace Terberg units which were originally

purchased in 1984.

Ron van Arkel:

“We want to make our broad range of

tractors for use in ports, industry and

distribution centres more visible in the

Americas. The innovative features of

our products and extensive options for

optimisation can help our customers to run

their operations more efficiently.“
