over the past three years we have completely

updated our factory at Benschop. The layout has

been optimised and we have introduced new

production methods. Consequently, we have

increased our output, without increasing the

footprint of our plant. Furthermore, our personnel

now benefit from a much better working

environment. Innovation is one of the core values

behind our family-owned company. By investing

continuously in engineering and development we

can offer our customers the best combination of

quality and performance. This is supported by a

professional distributor network throughout the

world. Together, these strengths provide a solid

basis for customer satisfaction and the continuity

of our company. our design engineers are always

improving existing designs and developing new

ones. Last year we introduced the new generation

of rT tractors. This year will see the introduction

of a fully-electric YT tractor and our new Swap

Body Carrier. These models are our response

to new challenges in a rapidly changing world.

A world in which Terberg aims for continuous

improvement and customer satisfaction.

Gerard Verdam and Henri Jacobs:

The driving force behind The no.1 in TracTors

i n n o V a t i o n a n d d e V e l o P m e n tinterView - gerard Verdam and Henri Jacobs

Becoming the world leader in quality and innovation in the tractor market takes some doing. The development department is behind this success. There is always something new to see during a visit to Terberg’s think-tank where Gerard Verdam, engineering & Production Manager, and Henri Jacobs, Technical Manager Terminals, work hard on maintaining Terberg’s leading position in the market.

As Gerard Verdam puts it: “without innovation

this business would not have a future.” As Head

of development he has been operating at the

interface between creativity, commerce and

engineering for decades. In his 35 years with the

company, Gerard has been closely involved in

practically the entire development cycle of our

tractors. Gerard is still ultimately responsible

for product development. However, as he is

now also Production Manager, the day-to-day

development efforts are managed by Henri

Jacobs.

Since the launch of the first Terberg tractor

in 1973 this product line has seen huge

growth. It is now Terberg’s major product

line and the company is one of the top-three

manufacturers in terms of volume. Continuous

product development has ensured that the

shunting tractors from Benschop are the

preferred choice in ports, distribution centres,

heavy industry and waste processing plants.

The original tractor has now evolved into a

sophisticated modular kit, with new versions

being developed all the time. each version

is tailored towards a specific application and

offers user real benefits. Terberg develops and

manufactures the tractors largely in-house,

with the exception of the driveline where a

range of types and brands is offered.

FIrST FuLLY-eLeCTrIC TrACTor

These kits provide the basis for several

successful product lines, such as the yard

tractors (YT series), terminal tractors (TT),

roro tractors (rT), rail/road vehicles (rr)

and swap body carriers (BC). These products

are continuously updated to stay ahead of

the market. The fully electric tractor to be

introduced by Terberg at the distributors’

meeting in September is a real breakthrough.

“For years, large customers have been asking us

to develop a hybrid drive tractor. However, the

high first cost would lead to an unacceptably

high total cost of ownership.” Gerard explained

that this is why Terberg went for a fully electric

model: “In recent years, there has been

such progress in battery technology that we

decided to develop a fully electric tractor. The

key advantages: the system is uncomplicated

and therefore the cost is relatively low and

it requires little maintenance, it is extremely

environment-friendly as there are zero

emissions, the noise level is low, and the new

battery technology means that the tractor can

operate for a full shift, 8 to 16 hours. After that

it needs to be recharged, which takes 1 to 1.5

hours. The battery has a life of around 3500 to

5000 charge cycles, or about 5 to 7 years, which

is rather longer than the usual write-off period

for tractors.”

uNrIVALLed deSIGN

Terberg has also revolutionised the roro

tractor market. A completely new design was

introduced in 2009, featuring a state of the art

driver’s cab with the 180° swivelling ergoturn®

seat designed in-house, and an even better

view in all directions. This model is unrivalled

in terms of performance, ease of operation and

ergonomics. Henri Jacobs commented: “we

have also introduced a range of new engines

which meet the latest emission requirements.

They also deliver a high torque at low rPM and

have already proven themselves in practice.”

By now, most tractor models have been

upgraded to the new design. The rT383,

the heaviest model, will follow at the end of

2012. A mid-range model, the rT323 has been

introduced and an economy version of the 180°

swivelling seat is available.

Finally, Henri mentioned the updated version

of the swap body carrier, the BC182 which will

also be launched in September. “Again, we

have made a real effort to deliver the lowest

total cost of ownership. we have extended the

service interval, reduced the fuel consumption

by 5 - 10%, and used lighter and highly reliable

components. The vehicle now features a

new CAN bus system. This means that it is

very straightforward to change the settings

if the customer wants to use it for different

operations for a while. There is no need to

change any components for that. The BC182 is

also equipped with the latest euro 5 engine and

the cab has been upgraded. Finally, the user

interface is greatly improved, the driver now

has just one joystick to control all operations.

This is how Gerard Verdam and Henri Jacobs

ensure that Terberg is always in the lead.

Gerard commented: “But it’s not just about

one product. It’s about everything. Your

sales department, documentation, after-sales

support and everything else have to be equally

good. It all has to be done well to be successful.

And I think we really manage to do that.”

Terberg rT roro tractors (4x4 drive) and YT yard tractors (4x2) are widely used by major port operators worldwide. Their key reasons for choosing Terberg tractors are always the reliability and the low cost of ownership resulting from the high fuel efficiency and reduced maintenance costs. port operators with heavy roro cargo also appreciate the safeneck, which considerably increases safety when hauling heavy loads on steep ship’s ramps. We trust that these case studies give you a good idea of the port applications of our tractors.

Santos Brasil is the leading port operator in

South America. Their terminal at Tecon de

Santos is the continent’s largest container

terminal, handling approximately 1.5 million

Teu annually. The company recently

purchased 30 Terberg YT182 tractors through

our Brazilian distributor, rimac. These units

replaced conventional road tractors and were

selected because of their high reliability. The

tractors supplied to Santos Brasil are used to

haul heavy duty trailers, either singly or in

trains of two. rimac recently set up an on-site

CuYPerS VorKLIFTeN is one of Belgium’s

leading port-equipment hire companies with

a fleet of over 900 units. They operate 92

Terberg YT, TT and rT tractors and have

recently ordered 6 more units. Their clients

mostly use the tractors in ports, though some

YTs are also used at distribution centres.

CuYPerS VorKLIFTeN primarily chose

Terberg as their terminal tractor supplier

because of the quality and reliability of the

units, the long service life and the excellent

technical support. Furthermore, when the

tractors are eventually sold on the second-

hand market they receive relatively high prices

in return. Finally, CuYPerS VorKLIFTeN

appreciates the fact that Terberg is also a

family business which shares their approach

dP world is one of the world’s largest

container terminal operators, with more

than 60 terminals across six continents. The

company’s flagship Jebel Ali Port in dubai

is the leading hub for the region, serving

over 170 shipping lines and handling over

13 million Teu in 2011. dP world, uAe

region bought their first Terberg tractors

in 2009, and recently Terberg Middle east

(Me) supplied 44 YT222 tractors to Jebel Ali

container terminals. In the past three years we

have supplied over 100 tractors to dP world.

despite the hot climate in the uAe, there was

no need to upgrade the cooling systems of

the tractors as our standard design has ample

capacity. The cooling systems are also easy to

clean, an important factor in this area where

dust is often a challenge.

The 44 new YT222 units are fitted with

Cummins QSB engines and Allison

transmissions. They also feature a special

package to reduce fuel consumption by

between 6% and 15%. This reduces both the

Total Cost of ownership (TCo) and the carbon

footprint of the operations. In fact, we have

retrofitted all dP world’s existing tractors with

this package, which is now a standard feature

of Terberg tractors with Allison transmissions.

Terberg Me is located in Jebel Ali Free Zone in

dubai, adjoining the port. This branch serves

customers in neighbouring countries, such as

oman, Qatar and egypt, and African countries,

such as Kenya, Mozambique and South Africa.

about dp World

dP world operates more than 60 terminals

across six continents, with container handling

generating around 80% of its revenue. In

addition, the company currently has 11 new

developments and major expansions underway

in 10 countries. dP world aims to enhance

customers’ supply chain efficiency by

effectively managing container, bulk and other

terminal cargo. Its dedicated, experienced and

professional team of more than 30,000 people

serves customers in some of the most dynamic

economies in the world.

The company constantly invests in terminal

infrastructure, facilities and people, working

closely with customers and business partners

to provide quality services today and

tomorrow, when and where customers need

them.

In taking this customer-centric approach,

dP world is building on the established

relationships and superior level of service

demonstrated at its flagship Jebel Ali facility in

dubai, which has been voted “Best Seaport in

the Middle east” for 18 consecutive years.

In 2011, dP world handled nearly 55 million

Teu (twenty-foot equivalent container units)

across its portfolio from the Americas to Asia.

with a pipeline of expansion and development

projects in key growth markets, including

India, China and the Middle east, capacity is

expected to rise to around 103 million Teu by

2020, in line with market demand.

Together we can achieve more

In recent years, one of Terberg’s objectives has

been to develop the company’s market share

in Africa. This depends on finding the right

distributors, as they are the eyes and ears in the

market. one of these distributors is eqstra in

South Africa.

exclusivity

eqstra was appointed in 2011 as the exclusive

distributor for South Africa, Mozambique and

Namibia. ronald erasmus, general manager

of eqstra’s Heavy Lift division, says that it

was important for the company to team up

with a leading manufacturer in the terminal

tractor segment. He commented: “Terberg

fits perfectly into our product strategy and

complements our business.” eqstra is a good

example of what Terberg is looking for in a

distributor: a solid organization, with dedicated

people, a pro-active approach and customer-

focused. of course, the after-sales capabilities

are also key to the success of the business.

TrANSNeTSouTH AFrICA

The combination of Terberg equipment

and eqstra’s market approach with its good

after-sales support, has proven to be very

fruitful. Transnet, South Africa’s national

port operator, first used Terberg tractors in

2011 at their largest terminal, durban. Based

on this experience, combined with eqstra’s

service, Terberg has been awarded a contract

for 14 Terberg YT222 4x2 terminal tractors

for Transnet’s latest development, the Port of

Ngqura near Port elizabeth.

durban Harbour, South Africa

10 11

Page 11: Terberg Special Vehicles Magazine 2012

Mr. erasmus continued: “Transnet is a

great reference to have when discussing

opportunities with new prospects. The

Terberg tractors at Ngqura have been in

operation since the beginning of 2012 and

we have had very positive feedback from

Transnet. The tractor is a well-engineered

quality product, which can easily withstand the

tough circumstances of a port environment.”

There are also great opportunities in other

sectors, such as industry and logistics. A

good example is the special tractor (6x2)

recently delivered to an industrial plant in

Mozambique. This loyal Terberg customer

has awarded Terberg with several contracts

since the late 90s. A leading supermarket chain

recently took delivery of a Terberg YT222 4x2

for their distribution centre. with the growing

markets in Africa and with the cooperation of

loyal and well established distributors, Terberg

has a good basis for future growth.

Finnish company Metsä Board Corporation has a large papermill 500 km north of Stockholm. The plant recently acquired five Terberg rT323 tractors to transport heavy loads such as timber for pulp production and reels of paper.

eight of the thirteen tractors at the terminal

were supplied by Terberg. They shuttle

between the papermill and the dedicated port

on the Gulf of Bothnia. Metsä purchased the

first three rT282 tractors in 2009. In the spring

of 2012 they purchased five powerful rT323

tractors. Both purchases were for the scheduled

replacement of older tractors which have

worked hard at the plant.

Logistic & Port Manager Carl-einar Åstrøm of

Metsä Board Corporation in Husum: “we used

to use tractors of other makes, but we heard

a lot of good things about Terberg units. For

example, they are used at the paper terminal

in Lübeck, an important transhipment port

for our products. our colleagues there really

recommended these terminal tractors. So we

went to Lübeck to take a look. what we saw

was a powerful and stable terminal tractor

which was also easy to use. A tractor with a

generously sized cab, a clear view of all the

instruments and a good working environment

for the operator.”

More PowerFuL

After further assessments and tests of the

Terberg tractors, working with Terberg

Scandinavia, the Metsä Board papermill initially

purchased three four-wheel drive rT282

units with 275 HP Mercedes engines. ”our

experience with the first three Terberg tractors

was very good. However, the rT282 doesn’t

have quite enough power for the loads our

terminal tractors have to deal with every day.

we could do with more power when we have

to pull loads of paper reels and pulp up the

steep ramps to the ships.

It’s 800 to 900 metres from the mill to the

quayside and that demands a lot of power

from the tractors. That’s because unlike most

industrial sites ours is quite hilly and the tractors

have to go up several slopes.” For that reason

the papermill decided to go a step further and

invest in five of the more powerful Terberg

rT323 4x4 326 HP tractors.

heavy loads. For example, they have to haul

Translifters with cassettes weighing around

large volumes of timber, using goosenecks and

large trailers which are continuously delivered

by ship. The timber is transported to the mill’s

woodyard and the loads are easily up to 70

tonnes. on average, each tractor makes around

20 trips a day between the dock and the mill,

hauling heavy loads.

dachser is an internationally operating

logistics company with 21,000 employees,

operating from 315 locations worldwide.

The company is family-owned and focussed

on long-term strategies – just like Terberg.

Their portfolio includes europe-wide road

transports, food logistics as well as worldwide

air and sea logistics. A range of specialist

services, such as dIY Logistics with daily

deliveries to 18,000 do-It-Yourself shops

throughout europe, completes dachser’s

service portfolio.

Although ISo shipping containers are now

an essential part of international logistics,

they need costly handling equipment.

Furthermore, because of their dimensions

there are inefficiencies if they are loaded with

europallets. “Hence, in the 1970s, dachser

was instrumental in the development of

swap bodies.” explained André Bilz, from

the technical department of dachser’s

headquarters. Typically these units are parked

on their folding legs at a loading bay. once

loaded, a truck or body carrier drives under

them and picks the swap body up by raising

the air suspension or operating a lift; the legs

are then folded up, the body is secured to

the carrier, and the units are finally delivered

to the destination where the process is

reversed. Swap bodies are particularly popular

in Germany where there are hundreds of

thousands of units in operation.

At their depots, dachser use Terberg BC

swap body carriers. These are also fitted with

drawbar couplings for drawbar trailers and

with fifth wheels to haul and lift semitrailers.

Additionally, dachser use a number of YT

shunters.

duvenbeck, with its headquarters in Germany,

has long been in the top-five of european

automotive logistics specialists. The company

is at the forefront of integrated logistics

in this sector and specialises in providing

comprehensive logistics solutions.

At the new daimler factory in Kescemét,

Hungary, duvenbeck delivers components to

site, undertakes some pre-assembly, and then

supplies them just-in-time to the assembly line.

The company uses a Mobiler tractor to transfer

swap bodies delivered by rail to the yard or

directly to the plant or warehouse.

The Mobiler is a system of two arms fitted

to a truck body which can extend sideways.

It is used to transfer containers and swap

bodies between rail and road vehicles

without the need for cranes or other handling

equipment. This makes it much easier to

integrate rail and road logistics as intermodal

transfers are no longer restricted to dedicated

terminals. Mobiler was originally developed

in Switzerland and has been perfected by

Palfinger. The containers and swap bodies have

channels to accommodate the Mobiler arms,

or standard ISo shipping containers can be

fitted with Mobiler adapter blocks. Mobiler

systems are usually fitted to conventional trucks

which transport the containers or swap bodies

over longer distances. However, terminal and

distribution centre applications make special

demands. For example, getting on and off

cooperated to produce a Mobiler tractor. This

combines the innovation of the Mobiler system

with the typical robustness and fuel efficiency

of Terberg tractors.

The Mobiler tractor is suitable for three shift

cope with. Furthermore, its fully hydraulic

TerBerG TruCKS:

cusTom vehicles for on and off-road applicaTions In the construction and civil engineering sectors Terberg is synonymous with powerful custom-designed trucks of the highest quality for transport and earthmoving applications. The company’s Truck division has built up a unique reputation since it started 60 years ago by converting American ex-army vehicles.

Bert Terberg is now a fourth-generation director and

closely monitors the developments in the market,

ready to respond to them. “we have been given a

great start, but we have to keep moving forward.

Innovation and market focus are essential to success

and our survival as a truck manufacturer.” Hence

Mr Terberg’s comment about the great start. “The

foundations were laid by the earlier generations. we,

the fourth generation of the family, have to continue

to build on them. That means working hard. every day

we have to decide if there are new developments we

can respond to. we have been doing that for years and

still continue that tradition.”

entrepreneurial spirit is clearly one of the strengths

of the family. After starting in 1947 by converting ex-

army vehicles, Terberg introduced a three-axle truck

of their own design. when a client requested a four-

axle model, to increase the payload by 10 tonnes the

company built that, followed by a five-axle truck and

many other versions. All these vehicles were custom

designed and produced in-house to meet special

customer requirements.

SPeCIAL VeHICLeS

Terberg’s greatest strength is responding to niches

and needs which are not covered by standard

products. As Bert Terberg puts it: “we operate as

an extension of the large truck manufacturers. we

do that both by modifying standards trucks and by

building completely new vehicles.” Terberg has

established an impressive reputation by building

complete trucks under the company’s own

name. These special vehicles are mostly used for

construction and earth moving applications where

a high payload capacity and multi-axle drive are

essential for on and off-road applications. “our

plant in Benschop is responsible for these heavy

designs, which require extensive modifications of

the chassis, suspension and driveline. This is where

complete custom vehicles are built, on the basis of

our modular system. Terberg Benschop builds trucks

with three, four and five axles and GVws from 20 to

80 tonnes. The chassis and suspension are all built

in-house. These units are fitted with high quality

components from renowned manufacturers, such as

Volvo cabs and engines, Meritor axles and automatic

or manual transmissions. The modular system means

our customers can have a truck built to their exact

requirements.”

The range of components covered by the system

is continuously extended and reviewed to respond

to current developments and our customers’

requirements. Mr Terberg gave an example: “A key

development is the introduction of Volvo’s euro 6

engine in 2012. This engine is exceptionally clean and

quiet, and meets the new emission standards which

will be introduced in 2014.” These state of the art

applications ensure that all Terberg trucks offer the

highest functionality, quality and durability.

TerBerG HooGeVeeN

Terberg also means the best in commercial vehicle

servicing. In the 1970s Terberg Benschop opened

a service workshop in Hoogeveen which has now

developed into an all-round service centre for

trucks, trailers and vans. Terberg Hoogeveen is an

official service workshop for Terberg and renault

trucks and also provides maintenance, repair and

inspection services for trucks and vans of all other

makes. Additionally, Terberg Hoogeveen undertakes

specialist operations such as truck modifications,

chassis straightening and repairing all types of

driveshafts. Trucks are also modified by fitting cranes,

refrigeration units, container systems and positive

pressure systems. Mr Terberg: “our workshop in

Terberg is well-known as a manufacturer of

trucks carrying the company’s name. Another

service provided by the company, modification

of standard trucks of all makes, is less visible as

these vehicles do not carry the Terberg name.

This is done by Terberg Techniek in IJsselstein

and Baarlo. These modifications include installing

additional axles, extending and shortening chassis

and driveshafts and fitting special bodies. Terberg

Techniek Baarlo is also a dealer and installer of

Atlas truck loading cranes and VdL hook and

cable lift systems for containers. Additionally, this

branch offers a full service package for trucks and

vans. “The interaction between our operating

companies results in intensive cross-fertilization.

Because they offer similar scopes we can reallocate

work between the branches. That allows us to

respond quickly and provide a better service to

our customers.” so explained Mr Terberg. Terberg

Techniek IJsselstein offers an even wider scope.

This branch is not only an officially approved

modification specialist for Volvo and renault

trucks, but also supplies a range of custom vehicles.

The director of the Truck division concludes:

“Any modification is possible, as long as there is

a market for it.” He can see good prospects for

Terberg’s vehicle modification operations which

are rapidly expanding. For example: international

cooperation with renault France on a range of axle

configurations, and with Volvo equipment on the

introduction of a special 8 x 6 version of the Volvo

articulated dumper truck.

This will allow Terberg to continue operating as a

supplier of unique vehicles, which have had a loyal

circle of customers for many years.

it to operate on the existing loads. As a result, there

was no need to improve the roads, saving significant

botas, turkey

Botas operates oil and gas pipelines in Turkey. In the

past, when a natural gas pipeline section was shut

down for maintenance, the gas in the section was

flared off. To reduce this waste of a precious resource,

Botas decided to invest in a gas compression truck to

pump the gas from the shut-down section into the

adjacent live section of the pipeline. This required

a robust truck capable of operating on remote sites.

Given local legislation the weight was limited to 32

tonnes. enerflex (Canada), the supplier of the gas

compression unit, selected a Terberg FM2000 8x8

truck as a base. This model is usually supplied as a

tipper truck for use on rough terrain and has proven

to be highly reliable. For this application, the truck

was fitted with a 90 bar gas compressor driven by a

gas engine powered by gas from the pipeline. The

vehicle has four props to provide a stable and level

work platform. The Terberg engineering department

provided all the calculations and documentation

required for approval in Turkey and ensured that the

appropriate sidelights, bumpers, etc. were fitted.

well serVicing truck

schlumberger, russia

oil wells need to be regularly maintained to keep

production at the required level. The thick-walled

pipe (1” to 2 3/8”) used for this purpose is stored on

a reel, unwound, and pushed down the oil well. well

treatment fluids can then be introduced. Because

of their large diameter, the reels usually have to be

transported on special trailers instead of trucks.

However, these trailers cannot reach remote sites on

rough terrain, which is common in russia. To solve

these problems, we built two well service trucks,

based on our FM2000 8x8 design. To accommodate

the large pipe reel, we had to develop a box frame

chassis for the truck instead of using the normal beam

chassis. This also ensures that the truck stays within

the 4 metre size restriction and can therefore pass

through most tunnels and there is no need to apply for

outsize load permits.

A further advantage of this design is its relatively

low centre of gravity which improves the stability

of a vehicle. The driveline also required extensive

modification. To power the reel and the cleaning unit

installed on the well, the trucks were fitted with a

power take-off capable of providing up to 188 kw.

The trucks were also fitted with elevating control

rooms to give the operator a good view of the coil

reel and the well. Fitting all the equipment within

the limited space available was quite a challenge. To

cope with the climate conditions the trucks have an

operating range of -40°C to +50°C. our customer

now has two relatively compact well servicing

trucks that can reach even the most remote well

sites, enabling them to maintain the oil wells more

efficiently.

steel mat trucks

Terberg supplies dedicated trucks to contractors who

lay out steel mats or panels to make soft ground sites

accessible to heavy vehicles. when laying the mats

the operator normally sits on the crane at the rear of

the vehicle. From this position they can control not

only the crane but also the steering and low forward/

reverse gears of the truck.

This enables the operator to reposition the truck

without having to go back to the cab. As an

alternative, we can supply a radio remote control

system for both the crane and the truck. This has the

advantage of the operator being able to work from a

position with a good view of the work site.

on-site training courses. Normally, I give a five-day course to service technicians and show them

how to maintain the engine, electrical systems, hydraulics and pneumatics. Fortunately, all the parts

are readily accessible, which makes both training and maintenance much easier. I also give half-day

courses to drivers to show them how to get the best out of their Terberg tractor.” our customers

appreciate the training as it helps them to keep their fleet in excellent operating condition, and at

Marti Tunnelbau AG, a Swiss tunnelling contractor, has been

using Terberg rT tractors for well over ten years for

on-site transport at the sites of two major construction

projects. They chose the rTs as they have lower fuel and

maintenance costs than road transport tractors and also last

several times longer under arduous site conditions. The resulting lower Total Cost of

ownership (TCo) is essential to them since a site may

operate for more than a decade.

At Marti’s request, Terberg developed the

rT382, a compact dumper for use in tunnels and

on construction sites. The vehicle is only 2.55

metres wide which allows for two-way traffic

in tunnels under construction, and it can also

turn round in most tunnels. It is currently fitted

with a 15 cubic metre tipper body, though larger

ones can be used. The payload is 40 tonnes and,

fully laden, the rT382 can negotiate inclines of

up to 12%. where appropriate, the tipper body

To deal with long steep downward slopes,

the rT382 is fitted with a Jacobs engine brake

to prevent overheating of the retarder and

conventional brakes. At one of the project

sites, this engine brake allows the vehicle to

descend 12% slopes with a length of more than

c o n s t r u c t i o n a P P l i c a t i o n s

Six Terberg vehicles are at work high in the

mountains in Switzerland. The contractor is

building three tunnels for the expansion of

a hydroelectric power plant at a remote site

that can only be reached by two dedicated

cableways. Four of our rT222 tractors haul

trailers through the tunnels. due to their small

turning circle, our tractors can turn around in

the tunnel, but the trailers cannot. The trailers

are therefore fitted with couplings on each side.

The site also operates two custom-designed

CC-rT222 container carriers for transporting

concrete and other materials. The four-wheel

drive and robust design have proven their

worth in this difficult environment and the

contractor is planning to use these tractors

for similar future projects. Although normally

operating at sea level, it is evident that Terberg

tractors are equally suitable for working at

2,500 metres above it.

one of our customers asked for a better solution for hauling loads over 80 tonnes up and down roro ramps. Although there are several options for this, such as using heavier tractors or fitting the tractors with ballast, none addresses the underlying issue: the poor distribution of the trailer weight between the front and rear axles of the tractor. This is because normally the load is applied to the fifth wheel towards the rear of the tractor and also because the fifth wheel has to be lifted to raise the rolltrailer off the ground.

t e c H n i c a l F o c u ssaFeneck®

®

32 33

Page 33: Terberg Special Vehicles Magazine 2012

After pursuing several design options Terberg

developed the patented SafeNeck® system.

This provides a special coupling on the fifth

wheel frame, forward of the fifth wheel.

This coupling receives the SafeNeck® which

is equipped with a hydraulic cylinder to lift

the trailer off the ground. As the trailer load

is applied to the tractor in a more favourable

location and as there is no need to raise the fifth

wheel the load distribution between the tractor

axles is greatly improved. Consequently, the

loads which can be handled on roro ramps

may be up to 2.5 times heavier than when

operating with a conventional gooseneck.

Furthermore the increased stability greatly

improves operational safety.

The SafeNeck® coupling on the tractor is made

of a special composite which is maintenance-

free. The coupling provides two degrees

of freedom: rotation and tilt. This ensures

excellent stability and improved handling of the

tractor and trailer. when the SafeNeck® is not

connected to a trailer, it rests on the fifth wheel

and a pin restricts its sideways movement for

safety. This pin is engaged automatically.

Another advantage is that rolltrailers can be

lifted up higher and the increased ground

clearance makes it possible to negotiate

steeper ramps. Furthermore, the SafeNeck®

makes it easier to pick a trailer up because

of the improved view compared with a

conventional gooseneck. Tractors fitted with

a SafeNeck® coupling retain the fifth wheel

and can therefore also be used with road

semitrailers and conventional goosenecks for

greater operational flexibility. It only takes a

few minutes to couple a SafeNeck® to a tractor

and when not in use it is stored on a dedicated

stand. The hydraulic lift cylinder is operated

from the driver’s seat.

The SafeNeck® system is the perfect solution

for handling loads over 80 tonnes (reels of

paper, heavy machinery, etc.) on ramps. Hence

the system is mostly used in ports with roro

operations.

load transfer to the front axle and

therefore the safe permissible payload.

The safe working capacity of a standard

Surprisingly, the economic downturn of a few years ago brought some benefits for Terberg Benschop. The temporary drop-off in orders provided us with breathing space to overhaul our production lines and prepare for future growth. The re-engineering of the production lines has been an impressive feat, and implemented fully in-house. Project Manager Theo rosendal saw it as a great opportunity to apply all aspects of his automotive engineering and management expertise.

After years of growth, Terberg Benschop had

outgrown the production plant. Theo rosendal

explains: “It took a lot of improvisation to build

all the vehicles our customers ordered. we

were planning to relocate part of the operations

to a new building in IJsselstein, a nearby town. ”

Nevertheless, the economic downturn of 2008

provided us with new opportunities. “when

the production volume dropped we considered

the options for expanding the capacity of the

Benschop site. The temporary downturn gave

us the breathing space to re-engineer the plant.

That would have been impossible if we had

been running at full capacity. In other words,

you can use lean times to increase capacity for

when the economy improves again.” Theo’s

plan was welcomed by the management and

he was asked to work with Gerard Verdam,

engineering & Production Manager, and a

small team to develop the project in detail.

CoNSISTeNT QuALITY

This was just the sort of challenge Theo

enjoys. As an engineer in the development

department, he was fully familiar with both

our products and the production process. “In

this company you simply can’t separate those.

As all our products are extensively customised

there is a great interaction between the two.”

Increasing the capacity was only one of the

objectives. “The quality of the end-product is

even more important. our earlier expansion

had resulted in parallel processes and parallel

teams to increase the volume. However, that

made it more difficult to ensure consistent

quality - just what we wanted to avoid.”

SoLVING Two ProBLeMS AT oNCe

during the preparation of the project, all

aspects of the process were considered in

detail and new developments in production

operations were assessed. After that, detailed

plans were developed for each building. “By

dividing the operations into smaller units

we solve two problems at once: production

is increased to obtain a higher output and,

because everyone works on the same line, the

quality is consistent. Improved control of the

process, cycle times and schedules is a further

advantage. This allows us to improve the

quality and reliability of the deliveries to our

environment, they will enjoy their work more

and do a better job. ultimately, this improves

quality and reduces absenteeism.” Theo

praised the commitment and flexibility of our

personnel during the refurbishment of the

plant and the internal relocations. “Because of

the limited time available we could not consult

everyone at the plant. Still, we did get a lot of

internal input by involving internal specialists.

we had shown everyone a model of the new

plant and now that it is operating we are

listening to them and using their suggestions to

further optimise it.”

The new YT tractor production line has now

been operating for a year and the new lines for

the other vehicles will be completed soon. The

project has fulfilled all expectations. “we are

already benefiting greatly from the decisions

we took at the time. The business is doing

well and this might turn out to be one of our

best years yet. we can now meet the demand

without having to improvise all the time.” The

project was done completely in-house. Theo

rosendal enjoyed having the opportunity to

implement it and was recently appointed as

Manager of Production and Quality.

rr222 rail/road vehicle finds a home

Page 37: Terberg Special Vehicles Magazine 2012

The rr222 was developed by Terberg in

cooperation with Zagro, a Germany company

specialising in rail/road vehicles. It is equally

effective on paved surfaces and on railway

track. The two driver’s seats ensure that the

driver always faces in the driving direction. on

track the unit can handle a Gross Combination

weight of up to 2000 tons. The small turning

radius, 6.88 metres, is ideal for operations on

busy sites and the vehicle can be supplied for all

track gauges from 1.0 to 1.668 metres.

The first rr222 to come off the assembly line is

now hard at work at the JSC Klaipėda Container

Terminal in Lithuania. This is the second

largest container terminal in the Baltic States.

The rr222 is used for shunting wagons with

fertiliser and agricultural products which are

loaded, unloaded and weighed at the terminal.

JSC chose this unit because it was the perfect

fit for their requirements and also because they

are very satisfied with their 11 Terberg YT and

rr tractors.

at Terberg we have always felt that we not only have responsibilities towards our customers and our employees, but also to society in general.

QualiTY and corporaTe social responsibiliTY go hand in hand

environmental protection, well beyond statutory requirements, is an

important element of our corporate social responsibility. Currently, the

key issue in this context is resource use, especially energy use. Hence

our refurbished production plant has many energy-saving features.

However, the greatest energy savings are associated with use of our

tractors by customers. our constant focus on optimising the driveline

and fuel efficiency of our tractors significantly reduces their carbon

footprint. The robust design and ease of maintenance help extend

the life of our products. excellent manoeuvrability means that our

customers can get the work done with fewer tractors, operating fewer

hours, saving even more fuel. Furthermore, after being retired from

intensive use at a port or distribution centre our tractors are still sought-

after on the second-hand market as they still have years of productive

life in them. Finally, when our products are scrapped they can largely

be recycled. It is also Terberg’s policy to offer new engine models with

lower emissions well before they become mandatory. our new electric

tractor takes this development to its ultimate conclusion as it has zero

emissions at the point of use as well as a reduced noise level. Terberg

also aims to be a good neighbour. our upgraded production plant has

improved acoustic insulation to reduce our impact on the surroundings.

we also support local sports clubs and other societies. To us this is

an essential part of running a business. In essence, the quality of our

products and our commitment to corporate social responsibility are all

based on the same principle: do the job right, the first time, every time!
