Ebden out but Tennis Hopes Soar! Last week Wembley Downs Matthew Ebden stormed into the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open, known as the prestigious Indian Wells tournament or the 5th Grand Slam on the tennis tour. The 24 year old qualifier took out Igor Kunitsyn and No. 32 seed Julien Benneteau in the first 2 rounds before facing America’s number one seed (No. 8 in the world) Mardy Fish. Ebden managed to knock the heavy hitting American out of contention on home soil, cruising into the fourth round in straight sets 6-3 6-4. A very excited Ebden had this to say about his win over America’s number one. “Especially in America, to beat the top player here is an incredible feeling,” “Very big win. I’m pleased with my progress, and got another big American next round. I’m just loving what I’m doing out here. I really love competing hard and tackling the opportunity. I’ll do that again. I will look forward to the next one.” Ebden’s dream run was however cut short in the fourth round as larger than life American, John Isner scraped past him in 2 competitive sets 6-4, 7-5. Very gallant in defeat, Ebden had nothing but praise for his 6ft 9 inch opponent. “John is playing some great tennis at the moment. It came down to a few points and it didn’t quite fall my way.” “All credit to John and I wish him all the best for the rest of the tournament.” Ebden stated online. Isner went on to make the final but fell to Roger Federer in straight sets 7-6, 6-3. Ebden has had a stellar season thus far, with his current ranking climbing to 78 in the world.

Make me a Tennis Hot Shots TV Star Comp Nine-year-old Tim Kustka of Perth enjoyed one of the coolest prizes ever this weekend. As the winner of the Nickeodeon “Make me a MLC Tennis Hot Shots TV Star” competition, Tim and 30 of his friends hit the courts at Kingsley Tennis Club to feature in a Nickelodeon TV commercial and play MLC Tennis Hot Shots with Nickelodeon’s Luke & Wyatt, SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick. “The best part of the day was playing Hot Shots with my favourite Nickelodeon characters,” Tim said. “Hot Shots is great way to have fun with your friends,” he added. As part of his prize Tim also took home a MLC Tennis Hot Shots kit (which includes a net, four racquets, balls and a hat) plus a $500 Rebel Sports Voucher. The highlight of the day was without a doubt the green sliming of Tim … Luke and Wyatt poured the slim all over Tim as his friends cheered him on. To coincide with the Nickelodeon festivities, Kingley Tennis Club held an open day. Troy Hargreaves, the club coach, was on hand with his assistants to run a fun array of Tennis Hot Shots activities for the kids. “Everyone has had a really, really good time, and this festival of tennis has been a great opportunity for our club,” Bryan Saunders, President of Kingsley Tennis Club, said.

“Tennis Hot Shots is a popular program at Kingsley Tennis Club, and we’re currently working with local schools to get more kids playing tennis, which has been successful so far – and this Nickelodeon event will only help that success,” Saunders said. Article continued next page..
