TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 5 The Herbert & Eileen Bernard Museum at Temple Emanu-El in New York will open its Spring 2019 exhibition, The Guiding Hand, Torah Pointers Past and Present. To mark the opening of this exhibition, Temple Emanu-El’s Bernard Museum, in partnership with the Memorial Scrolls Trust (MST) of London, will be hosting a gathering of Czech scrolls that survived the Holocaust. This will be the first gathering of this type in New York City. Ira Simon will bring the Temple Sholom MST scroll along with a group of interested congregants to participate in a procession of the scrolls. There will be a discussion of the

exhibition and a visit to the museum. It will be a truly powerful and memorable experience to be surrounded by dozens of Czech survivor scrolls held by their proud custodians. For more

From: the Rabbi... The Role of Women in

the Book of Esther

On Friday, March 22, we will be celebrating the holiday of Purim during Shabbat services (see page 1 for more information). On Purim we tell the story of Esther, which is one of the Megilot from the book of Writings in the Hebrew Bible. Two of the main characters in the story of Esther are women, Esther herself and Vashti. Both women are wise and powerful in their own way during a time in which kings and men dominated society. They teach us important lessons.

We meet Vashti first. She is the queen, and the king summons her to show herself off before a drunken party of his friends and peers. Instead of doing as the king requested, she had enough self-confidence to refuse his humiliating request. By doing so, the king felt she was setting an example for other women in the kingdom that would jeopardize the status of all the men. He banishes her and passes a rule that “every man should bear rule in his own house.” (Esther 1:22) Fast forward to today, we now have many strong-minded independent women in the “House.”

Esther is chosen to take Vashti’s place as the new queen. She begins by being very deferential to both her cousin Mordecai, who tells her to “apply for the job,” and to the King who picks her to be his wife, until……. The evil Haman gets mad at Mordecai because he won’t bow down to Haman, and tells the king he wants to kill all the Jews. Mordecai tells Esther to go before the King and tell him she is also Jewish. She says that she cannot go without being summoned. His answer is one of the most important messages in this Bible story. “Do not imagine that you, of all the Jews, will escape with your life by being in the king’s palace… And who knows, perhaps you have attained to royal position for just such a crisis.” (Esther 4:13-14) Using her wisdom, Esther came up with a plan to tell the King her story and gain his support. Because of her actions, the Jewish community was saved.

From this we learn that all Jews are responsible for each other, even if we ourselves feel safe. We also realize that sometimes because we feel safe perhaps we are in a better position to help others. We should not take our status or position for granted but look for ways in which what we have can be used to make a difference in other people’s lives.

Silent Auction March - June 2019Temple Sholom is having a silent auction as a major fundraiser. For this event to succeed, temple members will need to solicit or donate items or services/experiences that can be auctioned. Each member unit will need to contribute to the auction and/or commit to working the event.

The fundraiser will feature both an online and an in-house component. The online component will function similarly to ebay. Bidding on these items will start three months prior to our in-house event with some items available for a shorter period of time, and some available through the end of the in-house event.

We are hoping for high quality items. Keep in mind that most items will be displayed using photos and a written description.

Please mark your calendars for June 23, 2019, at 3 PM, which is the date of the culminating in-house event. Please start to think of ways that you can contribute.

The Story of Passover: The Greatest EscapeFor reading to, or with, younger childrenPassover is one of the most popular Jewish holidays. One way we celebrate is by going to a very special dinner party called a Seder. We read a script from a book called a Haggadah which urges us to try foods we don’t usually eat, encourages us to ask questions, play with our food and even slouch in our chairs! Why? Why indeed! Long, long ago, there was not enough food to share in the land of Canaan, which today is called Israel. The Israelites of Canaan traveled for many days to live in Egypt where there was plenty of food. Welcomed as honored guests by the Egyptian king, the Pharaoh, they ended up living in Egypt for many, many years where they became excellent farmers and shepherds. How many years? Over 400 years!

After all those years, a new Pharaoh was unhappy that the Pharaoh from long ago let the Israelites stay in Egypt. The new Pharaoh was afraid there were so many Israelites that they would become the rulers over the Egyptians, when all they wanted was to raise their flocks. When Pharaoh needed buildings and statues to be built for his cities, he decided the Israelites should do all the work. They became his slaves! Making bricks and pulling heavy loads, they worked for hours and hours under the hot sun with very little food and water. By adding more and more cruel burdens, Pharaoh made life extremely hard for the Israelites. The Torah teaches us that God realized it was time to get them out of Egypt. Knowing that the Israelites would be more likely to listen to one of their own, God picked a young man named Moses by speaking to him from a burning bush! Amazed that the bush burned without turning to ash, Moses knew God was strong, but he did not feel strong enough to be a hero. God told Moses that his brother Aaron would help him. Moses and Aaron appeared before Pharaoh to deliver God’s message: “Let my people go!” Pharaoh answered, “No!” God caused Moses’ walking stick to become a snake but Pharaoh just made the slaves work harder. Since God wanted to change Pharaoh’s mind by showing him what it felt like to be treated badly, God created plagues like frogs and darkness. During each plague, Moses and Aaron said, “Let my people go!” Terrified, Pharaoh said, “Yes!” but he changed his mind and said, “No!” when each plague stopped. Finally, the last plague was so terrible that when Moses and Aaron said “Let my people go!” Pharaoh answered “Yes!” and meant it this time. Or he thought he meant it until after the Israelites left. Pharaoh asked, “Who will build my cities for free?” He and his army chased after the Israelites to bring them back. Thinking that it would be easy to catch them at the shore of the sea, the Egyptians were astonished to see the Israelites crossing through on dry land! God had caused the water to separate - the biggest miracle yet! Moses, Aaron, their sister Miriam and all the Israelites sang and danced to celebrate their escape from slavery. Today, we gather around our Seder tables to celebrate that great escape by retelling the story and imagining that we lived through the miracles!

Winter Shabbat Schedule - Services start 6:00 PMPreceded by Snack & Schmooze at 5:30

RABBI MEDWIN’S SCHEDULE TUESDAYS: Rabbi is generally at the temple teaching classes from 12:00 noon – 3:00 PM, arriving at 11:30 am and staying through 4:00 PM in the summer and 6:00 PM when there is religious school. FRIDAYS: Rabbi usually arrives at temple 1½ hours before services. OTHER DAYS: Rabbi Medwin works from home at least one day a week and Friday mornings preparing for classes, services, and working on other temple business. Please note: Contact the rabbi directly if you would like to talk or set a time to meet.

Weather Cancellations During the winter months (which can be as late as April) please check your e-mail or www.weather.com (the Weather Channel) before coming to services on Friday nights. If there is a weather statement, advisory, or warning, there is a good possibility we will cancel services. We like to err on the side of caution. Even if your road is fine, others in the area could be icy. An e-mail will be sent out to the congregation if we decide to cancel services, but not everyone has or checks their e-mail regularly. If you want to be sure, you can e-mail [email protected] or call or text her at 607-765-2895.

Rabbi Medwin will Zoom services from her home on such days with information on how to connect to Zoom on the e-mail that goes out.
