ראש השנה לאילנותThe Rosh Hashanah for Trees
The Jewish people have had a traditional appreciation for trees since the time of the Temples in Jerusalem. There are laws regarding the fruits of the trees which entail giving the fruit as a tithe to the Priests and Levites in the fourth year and not eating the fruits until the fifth year of their growth. There is also a prohibition against cutting down the fruit trees of a city upon besieging it. There used to be a custom to plant a cedar tree when a boy was born and a cypress tree when a girl was born. The children would care for the trees as they grew up and on their wedding days would use the wood as poles for the chuppah. This carried the tradition of loving trees from one generation to the next. Tu B’Shvat focuses on trees rather than people. It also focuses on the ‘seven species’ for which Israel is known.
January 21, 2019 15 Shevat 5779
The following are descriptions of the Seven Species, Shivat HaMinim, of fruits and grains from Israel that are traditionally eaten
in celebration of Tu B’Shvat:
1. WHEAT—חטה Wheat's essential role puts it first among the Seven Species. Since ancient times, it has been considered one of man's most basic crops.
2. BARLEY—שערה Barley was, and still is, an important grain In Israel. Because it requires less water than wheat, it grows even in the arid fields of the Negev. Bread prepared from barley was considered to be "poor man's” bread, possibly because it was not considered as tasty as bread made from wheat.
3. GRAPES—גפן Humans have been cultivating grapes from the earliest times. The first vineyard mentioned in the Bible was planted by Noah after the Food. The cluster of grapes, brought to the Children of Israel in the wilderness by the Spies, symbolized the bounty of the Land of Israel.
4. FIG —תאנה The broad fig tree gives a lot of shade, hence the prophet Micha (4:4) proclaims in his vision of peace in the Land: “Each man will sit beneath his grapevine and his fig tree, and no one will fear...” (Continued on page 6)
6
Tu B’Shvat - (continued from page 5)
5. POMEGRANATE—רימן The pomegranate tree has aromas that flow "Out from the Dead Sea and on to Jericho…” as the old Hebrew song goes. The pomegranate also has rich red flowers and dark red fruit, and its abundant seeds serve as a powerful symbol of fertility.
6. OLIVE— זית The olive tree is one of the oldest and most common trees in the Land of Israel. There are olive trees in the Galilee that we estimated to be thousands of years old. Its leaves are green all year round, its roots are strong, and the silvery underside of the leaves give off a sheen of light.
7. DATE—תמר (Honey)—דבש The date is both one of the Seven Species for which the Land of Israel is noted and one of the Four Species used during Sukkot. The sweet dates, which ripen at the end summer, are eaten fresh or dried - and also used to make honey.
