Lushna took on several leadership roles but that did not stop her from achieving stellar results

Lushna Khialani (CG 04/15), who scored 7 Distinctions, was an MOE Pre-U Scholar, an A*STAR Science Award recipient, a Temasek Xcel Scholar, Chairperson of Infocomm Club and a facilitator for TJC’s Student Leadership Camp, Leadership Face-Off and DEFY Camp.

Lushna humbly admitted that due to her numerous leadership roles, she sometimes found the going tough, especially with the added responsibility of offering H3 History. She felt she did not do as well for her June Common Test in JC2, and that was when she refocused her efforts and ensured she had 6 hours of sleep daily.

Her hard work certainly paid off as she obtained 7 As and was recognised as one of TJC’s top students for her holistic achievements. She also received the MOE Edusave Scholarship, MOE EAGLES Awards for both Leadership and Service, and the MOE Edusave Character Award (ECHA).

Aston’s perseverance and hard work are certainly admirable!

Temasek Press also caught up with Aston Yap (CG 05/15). Aston related how he was retained for a year in JC1 when his poor results did not meet the promotional criteria. He remembered his sense of disappointment back then, but despite the setback, he never gave up.

“I went to seek my tutors for consultations more often and practised more,” Aston said. He remembered that Mrs Loo Lai Leng, his Civics Tutor, Project Work and Physics Tutor was very caring and supportive. She would make an extra effort to help him and held consultations with him regularly.

Armed proudly with 5 Distinctions today, Aston attributed his success to his dedicated tutors and his group of friends who stood by his side. Aston also received the MOE Edusave Character Award (ECHA).

Another star achiever Yang Jiashen (CG 03/15), who scored 8 Distinctions, said that he was even more determined to excel after the Prelims.

“During the weekends, I would study at the library with my friends and try my hand at new questions,” said Jiashen, who is also a Leo Club member, an organising team member of TOOP 2016 and a Mazarin volunteer.

On the College’s best set of results ever for General Paper, DyHead/Student Wellbeing Mr Francis Tong, who taught this cohort last year, said that he was proud of the students.

“The students were willing to put in the effort to read widely and expand their general knowledge,” he said. “When a cohort is teachable and goal-oriented, they can do well.”

Mr Jared Wong, subject tutor of Geography, added that he felt the 2016 cohort did well and they had performed to the best of their abilities. In the context of his Geography students, he said, “I felt blessed to be able to teach a group of students who had so much passion in Geography.”

Mr Russell Tan, DyHead/English Literature and Language Arts, commended the students’ drive and resilience, in achieving the College’s best results in H2 Literature in English.

“In the months leading up to the ‘A’ Levels, I vividly remember hordes of students taking the initiative to consult with their teachers and applying what they have learned,” he said.

Students were also affirmed for their achievements in non-academic areas

When asked about their secret to achieving success, Aston and Lushna both agreed that time management is key.

“Treat the 24 hours a day you have like 21 hours a day,” Lushna suggested. “Use your breaks to study and don’t waste the time.”

Any parting words for their juniors taking the ‘A’ Level this year?

“Start now and be consistent,” they responded in unison.
