President. Barney Mark,

"KEREN TELPED wil l continue to be one of the tundrais-

ing projects of Lodge Moledet." said newiy-elected Preal-dent of this Lodge, Barney Mark, at a banquet heldrecently to mark the 3rd Annual Installation of its officers.About 150 brethren and their wives attended, including alarge delegation from South Africa headed by the GrandPresident, Astor Freedman, and Stanley Distiller, a PastGrand President and grandson of the founder of the Order77 years ago, Joseph Distiller. They conducted the installation ceremony. Justice Felix Landau, of Jerusalem, wasalso present.

Tribute was paid to the outgoing President, SeymourFisher, who presented the Lodge with a candelabra whichhe had designed. 52 years of devoted care; 18,000 pre-school children, half of them prematures: 2,000 metaplot graduates of theschool : hundreds of vo lunteers: a dedicated staff : a l l th is ,and more, symbolises the most worthwhile WIZO project ofthe S.A. Women's Zionist Organisation.

When the WIZO Mothercraft Training Centre (the MTC)celebrated its Golden Jubilee two years ago, tribute was

paid to WIZO and to the MTC for their overwhelming contribution to the State. No-one realised that, within a fewmonths, a decision would be taken by the Social WelfareMinistry and WIZO to close the present MTC and replace itby a smaller project, presently under construction in theHerzlia area. The new project will stiii be under the aegis ofthe S.A. Women's Zionist Organisation. It wiil be run on themost modern lines — four complete separate family units.

A great deal of adjustment was required on the part of theS.A. Women's Zionist Organisation, the volunteers whowere so attached to the children, and the staff — many ofwhom had been with the MTC for over 35 years.

On March 31.1981, the MTC closed its doors for the lasttime. All the children had been placed; the remaining fewfor whom no ready solution could be found, were moved toa temporary home in the WIZO Hadassim children andyouth village where they are happily settled under the careof a warm and efficient couple — an abba who is a S.A.oleh and an Imma who Is a graduate of the mossed.

We take this opportunity of thanking all our friends hereand abroad, but in this instance particularly those who, through Teifed, supported us in our Summer Holidayscheme and hope that we wiil receive the same responsefrom them in the future for the children under our care.

"Basically, the nation's soul is healthy," said PresidentNavon In a recent Interview in the Jerusalem Pott. Proofthat he Is correct I have at least six times every day. However, an incident occurred In our street a few days agothat highlights this statement. We have here, living on herown, a woman who has a history of trouble with a foot. Toease her pain the doctors Immobilised the foot. Obviously afracture would create grave problems.

When she did have a fall In her house, we saw the "realIsrael" in action. One neighbour ran to the Kupat Hollm toget a doctor, another sat with her applying cold compressesto ease her pain, another went off to do her shopping so thatshe shouldn't worry about supplies. Everyone rushed in tosee what they could do lor her. The doctor came instantly.Baruch Hashem, there were no fractures and she recoveredvery quickly.

An anonymous (to me, at any rate) poet wrote ".. .twomen looked out of prison bars/the one saw mud, the otherstars...". That we have "mud" no one will deny but weshould remember that our people have encountered a gooddeal of stormy weather, which engenders mud and inevitably some of it sticks. Your column !• doing our poo-pie a great aervice by drawing the attention of thosewho only see the 'mud' to the finer side of our life tothe stars In our sky.

DISAPPEAflINQ BUREAUCRACY

For far too many years we've accepted the fact that ourbureaucratic ills will never be cured. Well, here's good news— the healing process has begun — by computerization!

Twelve years In Israel have given me confidence that theworst part of integration — bureaucracy — is over for me.anyway. Then, horror of horrors — I realised that March 31was on my doorstep and two "mas rihush" problems hadto be settled: I'd not received my latest account but worsestill, my previous account was a horrible baiagan thatneeded sorting out. This I'd neglected to do only because Iam a mora l coward when i t comes to bu reauc racy.

Two days to go! I gird on my Insult-prcof vest and, withrapidly sinking heart, go forth to do battle. Naturally, theMas Rihush office is crowded. Dragon Modi'in copes withthe masses by sheer weight of aggression. He dishes outbits of paper, points with his modi'in finger and snaps —number three. My turns comes. I cannlly say nothing aboutthe baiagan but simply ask for my undelivered latest account 901 can pay It. I get number four for my sagacity.

A crowded room, lopsided by the sheer weight of thenumber three's; me, in wonderful Isolation at my doormarked number four. 1 knock and enter. A young clerk, attending to a customer, politely asks me to wait. Someminutes later she listens to my tale of the missing account. No problem, she says; A matter of minutes. But, I addsomewhat nervously, I've also got an old account that's aterrible mess. She examines the old account, and againsays—no problem. With that, she pulls forward her deskcomputer and with incredible dexterity, taps out a series ofgentle tik-tik-tiks. In less than ten minutes a computer hassimplified my life with not a nerve-end In sight, by taking thebaiagan out of balagani Oh, frabjous dayl I go my wayjauntily because I know that bureaucracy has at last met its

Our friend Debbie, who lives on her own except for Nava,a girl student lodger whose home is in the north, tells usabout nice people. For many months she has beenfrustrated by the many small fixing jobs around the flat thatdon't get fixed. She herself never had "do-it-yourselfh a c h s h a r a h " ,

A few nights ago Nava's parents and her soldier brothercame to visit. During tea and talk the two men disappeared. There seemed to be a bit of quiet coming-and-going fromNava's room to the kitchen, but only when Debbie heard thesound of hammer on wood did she decide to investigate. The men shoo-ed her away. About an hour later what a surprise she hadi Two wall plugs changed and cementOd In;one light switch fixed; the wiring on a reading lampchanged; a wobbly table leg standing solidly; and the holein an outlet pipe hermetically epoxy-sealed.

Debbie was quite overcome with gratitude. Aliza andMoshe insisted that's what friends are for anyway. They alsosaid It was the most practical way they could show theirgratitude to Debbie for being like a second mother to Nava.Furthermore, they really did understand the problems ofpeople who live on their own but don't have the know-howto fix up little jobs. There really are nice people around!

■ECECHTTVE 1tET01lTSHLICHIM SEMINAR IN S.A.

The director of Telfed Office, Itz Stein, was recently inSouth Africa to attend a shiichim seminar, which was attended by both youth movement and aliyah departmentshiichim. The seminar discussed a wide range of importantsubjects and amongst other conclusions came out with firmsupport for the role and function of shiichim in SouthAf r i ca .

During his visit, Mr Stein addressed the Executive Council and had a number of meetings with the aliyah shiichim.

P R O J E C T A T A R S A P I R

Minister of Agriculture, Ariel Sharon, during a shortvisit to South Africa, responded favourably to Zionfed's ideaof a South African village project In Israel. Initial discussionswere pursued and shortly thereafter the Ministry confirmedan offer of 1,000 dunams of land outside Kfar Saba. MrJulius Welnstein, President of the SAZF visited the sitewith members of the Telfed executive and, after further discussion in Israel, returned to Johannesburg to report on theproject in detail.

The Executive in Johannesburg has now decided, inprinciple, to go ahead with the project and special committees have been established in Johannesburg and Tel Avivto carefully examine all aspects of the project.

H E e w N s i i t E Te m sHAIFA AND THE NORTH

"Look North young man" was the advice supposedlygiven by Cecil J. Rhodes. We would like to suggest to ourfellow ex South Africans who do not know Haifa and theNorth as well as they should, to look North and acquaintthemselves with this part of Israel, which has some of thefinest views and some of the nicest Jews.

We will endeavour to bring to every one's notice eventspast, present and future in our Haifa area. We will publishshort interviews with Vatikim whose remininscences oughtto be of interest as personal experiences of new Olim.

Too long has Haifa been the neglected quiet sister. Whilstnot declaring U.D.I., Haifa and the North is going to get. atleast in part, their Just due.

Thanks to the Federation, there is an office staffed fulltime by two efficient, charming ladies — Cheree Bloch assisted by Ghana Hochbaum. They can be contacted at 6Nordau Street. Hadar — Tel; 04-641058 — Sunday toThursdays for information and assistance.

Keep tfie evening of 16th July, 1961 open for a BeachBraal and Watermelon Feast to pay tribute to Louis'Shapiro on his 70th birthday. Louis is a coulourfuicharacter, who has spent most of his life, together with hisenergetic helpmate Hetta, helping other ex South Africans, particularly in Haifa. Louis is the Hon. Life President of theHaifa integration Committee. One of Louis' hobby horses isthe need for Federation-sponsored Housing in Haifa.Perhaps the powers-that-be would like to give Louis asurprise for his birthday and come up with somethingpositive in this direction.

In the pipe line there is a "Krugar'a Day" Happanlng atthe Goldbloom Centre (hopefully) on Oct. 10th at 8.30p.m. Those who know of the Haifa Committee's AnnualYom Ha'atmaut Picnic will realise that a "Happenihg" inHaifa is a must.

ANNUAL PICNIC — Once again , our Annual Picnic (onYom Ha'atzmaut) turned out to be a delightful and successful event which was much enjoyed by ail the more than450 people who attended. There was enthusiastic participation in the Raffle and in Bingo. The Coffee Stand was verywell patronized.

Israel CAZO Committee organised its third annualNDABA on Lag B'Omer. From ten o'clock on that sundrenched morning, streams of cars converged from alldirections on the picnic site at Beit Berl, To ensure the successful arrival of all participants, the last few kilometres weredecked out with arrowed road signs, "Ndaba lapa side".Participants carried their hampers and picnic paraphernaliathrough the gate, slopping momentarily to sign the registerand pay entrance money to Nick Alhadeff and CyntfilaMandefaofin and stepped on to the wide, green lawns bythe swimming pool.

Once again it was a great reunion day, for the fact is thatmany of those present do not see each other during theyear. They become involved with their own affairs in theirown localities, and friends could t>e' lost to each other, perhaps forever, were it not for the occasional organizedget-together.

The NDABA fairly bristled with CAZO ViPs. Amongst the225 picnickers were no less than five past presidents (HonLife President Dave Malmad, Hon. Life Vice-PresidentBoris Kaaa, Marvyn Laaovaky, Nick Alhadaff and EricBrod), two ex-general secretaries (Lalb Frank and GabyHalmowltz) .and a liberal sprinkling of the old Buiawayo

Tiyul to the north — Fifty S. The visitors' expectancy was well rewarded. They hadbeen particularly impressed by TUVAL's young settlersand those members of the tiyul who had been there beforeagreed that progress made over a short time has beenphenomenal.

Although the road ahead of the young people is a longand not an easy one, the spirit of these dedicated settlers intheir pioneering task is marvellous to see and their happiness infectious.

Dear Editor,

Our Ort Naut ica l Sct ioo l is one of the main sources ofskilled electronic, electrical and engine-room crew both forthe navy and subsequently the merchant navy.

Since a sound knowledge of English Is vital and a basicrequirement for the final examinations, we would like to increase the rather meagre supply of English textbooks andgeneral reading material available.

It goes without saying that in the current economicclimate, English books are rather low on the list of priorities.

A special effort to provide suitable English Languagereading matter, including a few subscriptions to technicaljournals/magazines and some better technical dictionarieswill be of tremendous benefit to the pupils, and is a valuablelong-term Investment!

The school library is situated in a well-organised roomwith reading tables, and the atmosphere is conducive tostudy. The librarian has spared no effort in making thepupils feel welcome In the library, Since this is a boardingschool, the library is of primary importance and in constantu s e .

Yours sincerely,Albert Edelson
