TEACHING & LEARNING TECHNOLOGY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR NEW BUILDINGS
INTRODUCTION
The following is a set of recommendations from IT Services on the types of technologies and
services that should to be considered in the design of a new building.
The recommendations are broken down under 4 headings –
Network Infrastructre
Teaching and Learning Spaces/Technologies/Services
Services supporting Research activities
Support Services
As it can be difficult to describe in detail some of the services that are outlined in this
document, we recommend that we run an IT Services eVent which will showcase some of
these spaces/technologies and services. The showcase will give the academic/user an
opportunity to see how the different spaces/technologies and services can be integrated
into their teaching and learning styles.
We have also produced a short video of how we have integrated some of these ideas in our
teaching, learning and research focused building, Daedalus.

NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURE
In conjunction with the Architects and Buildings and Services, we will recommend a network cabling plan which will meet the highest standards. This plan will include the provision for network plug in points for staff, students and a wireless service for the UCD Community and visitors.
2
A key input into this process is for the buidling plans to identify locations for –
Where staff require network plug in points
Where students require network plug in points
Network points to provide the Wireless service
Network points for the teachning stations (including the AV equipment)
Network points for collaborative/laboratory based activities As the university has over a 80% laptop ownership among students, the provision of power is a key component in supporting students mobile access to services.
TEACHNING AND LEARNING SPACES/TECHNOLOGIES/SERVICES
Teaching and Learning Spaces
Teaching and Learning naturally happens in numerous and disparate places, and it is
important that the new building as a whole is designed to support various types of formal
and informal learning. The following describes a number of teaching and learning spaces
and the type of learning inherent to their design. Some are designed for traditional formal
scheduled instruction, others for collaboration or group work and some for active learning.
3
Lecture Theatre
Description
Lecture theatres are large rooms that are primarily used for presentation-style teaching
where seating is on a tiered or sloped floor so that visual contact can be maintained
between every student and the instructor. The primary instructional wall should include
whiteboards and a projection screen generally motorized. All lecture rooms should be
designed with infrastructure to support multi-media equipment, which adheres to the
university standard.
Where a collaborative learning style is desirable in a lecture, it could be accomplished in
tiered rooms by having two rows of seats on one tier, fixing the back row of seats, and
allowing the front row to swivel thus allowing those seats to face the back row.
Purpose
Presentation style teaching.
Capacity
60 to 500 seats.
4
Facilities
Teaching station with desk mounted touch screen control panel, laptop input
capability, and desktop PC with DVD and USB.
Sympodium touch screen LCD monitor
Single or dual ceiling-mounted data projector (with ability to show separate images
on each screen).
Motorized screen
DVD/VHS
Document Camera/Reader
Sound capability with desktop and wireless mics
Whiteboard/s for instructor
Wireless network
Implementing the standard station will enable a proactive monitoring service of the AV
equipment e.g. turn on and off remotely, bulb management etc.
