El Padrino has become one of the early talking horseson the GI Kentucky Derby trail despite not having wona stakes. At 16-1, he was the fourth betting choice inPool 1 of the Derby future wager that closed Sunday,behind AAll Others@ (3-2), Union Rags (Dixie Union) (7-1)and Algorithms (Bernardini) (12-1). A big 12 3/4-lengthwinner in his second start in the mud at Belmont Oct.29, he then was beaten 3/4 lengths when third toO=Prado Again (El Prado {Ire}) in the GII Remsen S. Nov.26. In his first start of 2012, El Padrino unleashed astrong late run to beat Take Charge Indy (A.P. Indy) bytwo lengths in a 1 1/16-mile optional claimer in hislatest. That effort earned him a 100 Beyer (currently co-fourth best in the nation among sophomores), andplenty of respect from a betting public that seems to begauging El Padrino as a true two-turn horse. Kingmambo sired that tough and talented fillyVoodoo Dancer from a Danzig mare and Kinglet is outof a grand-daughter, by the GI Breeders= Cup Milewinner War Chant. War Chant=s record as a stallion has to be considereddisappointing in view of the opportunities he originallyreceived. He has only two winners at the highest levelon the flat to his credit in the major racing countries,one being last year=s GI Santa Anita Derby winnerMidnight Interlude, the other being the G1 National S.winner Kingsfort. However, Kinglet=s dam Karen=sCaper very nearly became a third Grade I winner for himin the years she carried the colors of Stonerside Stable. Coincidentally, both of these Godolphinperformers come from the same female line, each ofthem having the French filly Miss Satin as their fourthdam. I am glad to have the opportunity to write about thisfemale line, as Blue Bunting=s achievements of winninglast year=s G1 1,000 Guineas, G1 Irish Oaks and G1 Yorkshire Oaks marked her out as somethingspecial. At the time I opted to write about other horses,as I had already written about two other members ofDynaformer=s 2008 crop. Miss Skyscraper, the fifth dam of Kinglet and BlueBunting, was one of the foundation mares of the lateJean-Luc Lagardere=s highly successful racing andbreeding operation. Even though this tough filly hadwon the Kempton 1,000 Guineas Trial and earned aTimeform rating of 110, she was bought for as little as7,600gns. She rewarded her buyer with the Group 2winner Mister Ski and with Miss Satin, who producedthe G1 Prix Jacques le Marois winner Miss Satamixa toLinamix, who also sired Blue Bunting=s dam Miarixa.Miss Satin=s daughters also included Mrs Annie, whoproduced group winners to three different stallions, plusa Group 1 performer to a fourth. The Group 1performer, Mrs Arkada, is the second dam of BlueBunting. Miss Skyscraper=s family continues to flourish.Bonfire, the highly regarded English colt who featuredin a TDN >In Sharper Focus= piece Jan. 26 (click here), isout of a granddaughter of Miss Satin. Bonfire=s seconddam Miss d=Ouilly is the third dam of Kinglet. Kinglet=s family arrived in the U.S. with the purchaseof his second dam, Miss Caerleona. Only a listed-placedwinner in France, this daughter of Caerleon did well inher new home, notably winning the GIII Cardinal H.,and she was also runner-up in a Grade II over a mile and a half. Miss Caerleona continued the good work after shejoined the Stonerside broodmare band, producing theGrade II winner Miss Coronado in addition to Karen=sCaper. Kinglet has yet to tackle more than a mile, but there=sgood reason to think that he will stay a mile and aquarter. After all, Kingmambo=s Grade I/Group 1 scorersinclude winners of the Belmont S., St. Leger, JapaneseDerby, Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, Epsom Oaks, JapanCup, Pacific Classic and Caulfield Cup.

WONDER ACUTE AIMS FOR FEBRUARY UPSET The first Group 1 on the Japanese racing calendar isset for this Sunday, and while Transcend (Jpn) (WildRush) will be a short price to repeat in the G1 FebruaryS. at Tokyo, there are a few outsiders worthy of a look.They include Wonder Acute (Jpn) (Charismatic), a horsewith an American dirt pedigree top and bottom, being ason of the dual Classic winner Charismatic out of thePleasant Tap mare Wonder Heritage. As a 5-year-oldlast year, Wonder Acute hit his best stride, winning theG2 Tokai T. V. Tokai S. at Kyoto in May. After a six-month absence, he ran a non-threatening fourth in theG3 Miyako S. at Kyoto Nov. 6, then ran a strongsecond to Transcend in the G1 Japan Cup Dirt Dec. 4.He came back to nearly register the win in the 2000-meter Tokyo Daishoten Dec. 29--a local Group 1 thathe missed by a nose to Smart Falcon (Jpn) (SmartFalcon {Jpn}). Wonder Acute now scales back to 1600meters for the February, one of the most prestigiousdirt races in Japan and, with a purse of roughly $2.45million, worth nearly $1.18 million to the winner. ADVANCES AT ARQANA FEBRUARY MIXED Buoyed by its largest catalogue ever, Arqana=sFebruary Mixed Sale concluded its one-session run atDeauville yesterday, with 204 head grossingi1,627,500. It was the sale=s largest aggregate sincethe 2007 renewal, which was bolstered by a i2.2-million yield from the dispersal of Haras de Saint-Pair-du-Mont=s stock. The dispersal of the bloodstock ofMme Sylvia Wildenstein dominated this year=s auction,aiding in significant increases in both median andaverage figures. The dispersal also included six of theday=s top 10 lots. Opening the sale with a bang, all of the dispersal=s 11offerings were sold for a total i413,500, at an averageof i37,591 and a median of i34,000.
