Several members of trainer ToddPletcher’s seemingly endless roster ofTriple Crown hopefuls worked at PalmMeadows yesterday in preparation fortheir respective next races. Among thatgroup was Let’s Go Stable’s El Padrino(Pulpit), who breezed four furlongs in:48.28 as he nears a start in the GII RisenStar S. at Fair Grounds Feb. 25. “Ithought it was a very rhythmic work

with a super gallop-out,” Let’s Go’s Bryan Sullivan told the TDN.

El Padrino Breezes For Risen Star... Let=s Go Stable=s El Padrino (Pulpit) breezed fourfurlongs in :48.28 under jockey Javier Castellanoyesterday at Palm Meadows as he prepares for a returnto stakes company in the GII Risen Star S. at Fair

Grounds Feb. 25. TheTodd Pletcher-trained3-year-old is comingoff an impressiveallowance score overan off track atGulfstream Jan. 29(video). AI thought itwas a very rhythmicwork with a supergallop-out,@ said Bryan

Sullivan, who manages Let=s Go along with KevinScatuorchio, and was on hand for the work. ATodd andJavier were both pleased, so it seemed to go very well. He'll have one more work next week in preparation forthe Risen Star.@

El Padrino has become one of the early talking horseson the GI Kentucky Derby trail despite not having wona stakes. At 16-1, he was the fourth betting choice inPool 1 of the Derby future wager that closed Sunday, behind AAll Others@ (3-2), Union Rags (Dixie Union) (7-1)and Algorithms (Bernardini) (12-1). A big 12 3/4-lengthwinner in his second start in the mud at Belmont Oct.29, he then was beaten 3/4 lengths when third toO=Prado Again (El Prado {Ire}) in the GII Remsen S. Nov.26. In his first start of 2012, El Padrino unleashed astrong late run to beat Take Charge Indy (A.P. Indy) bytwo lengths in a 1 1/16-mile optional claimer in hislatest. That effort earned him a 100 Beyer (currently co-fourth best in the nation among sophomores), andplenty of respect from a betting public that seems to begauging El Padrino as a true two-turn horse. AAt the endof the day, we always thought the farther the betterwith this horse, so we=re all excited about his future,@added Sullivan. Castellano, who last weekend said hewould ride Algorithms over Union Rags in the GII Fountain of Youth S. at Gulfstream a day after theRisen Star, will make the trip to Louisiana to ride ElPadrino. -LM

Pletcher Pleased with Fountain Hopefuls... Trainer Todd Pletcher sent a pair of contenders forthe Feb. 26 GII Fountain of Youth S. to work yesterdayat Palm Meadows. Starlight Racing=s unbeatenAlgorithms (Bernardini), coming off a five-length victory

in the Jan. 29 GIII Holy Bull S.,went four furlongs in :49.20.Stablemate Discreet Dancer(Discreet Cat), a J “TDNRising Star” J, went fivefurlongs in company in1:00.90. AAlgorithms just had a nice, steady maintenance kind ofwork and galloped out strong,@Pletcher told Daily Racing

Form. AHe=s very fit, we don=t need to do much morewith him.@ Discreet Dancer, a perfect two-for-two in his career, has been off since a sparkling 5 1/2-length allowancevictory over one mile at Gulfstream Jan. 7 (video). TheRobsham homebred missed training time last week dueto an elevated temperature, but proved to his trainer hewas back on track yesterday. AI thought Discreet Dancer worked extra good thismorning,@ Pletcher said. AHe looked full of run andgalloped out strong. We made up some ground fromwhat we lost last week and I=m very happy where weare with him at the moment.@

It=s a measure of how much things have changed thatHabitat--a leading Irish stallion whose book wassometimes a little higher than the norm during the1970s--is credited with 695 foals during a career whichlasted until he was 20. Sadler=s Wells, on the otherhand, notched up 2,295 foals, while Storm Cat bowedout with 1,412, Mr. Prospector with 1,178 and Danzigwith 1,075. Plenty of today=s established stallions already havefour-figure totals to their credit. Using the Blood-Horse=sAEI table, Smart Strike has 1,024 named foals of racingage; Dynaformer 1,211; Unbridled=s Song 1,088,Giant=s Causeway 1,168; Tale of the Cat 1,178;Stormy Atlantic 1,088; Holy Bull 1,046; Grand Slam1,227; and Thunder Gulch 1,158. Of course several ofthese stallions also have Southern Hemisphere stock totheir credit. Sadly, one stallion whose total will never reach fourfigures is Kingmambo. Because health problemsreduced his ability to cover towards the end of hiscareer, Kingmambo has just under 900 named foals tohis credit, his final foal being a 2-year-old of 2012. Hewas retired after failing to impregnate his single mate in2010, at the age of 20. Kingmambo has only 11 3-year-olds in his 2009 cropbut one of them, Kinglet, added to his substantial totalof stakes winners when hefinished well to take lastweek=s G3 UAE 2,000Guineas. The question now iswhether this Godolphin coltcan progress to becomeKingmambo=s first Group 1winner since his excellent2005 crop, which featured Henrythenavigator,Thewayyouare, Campanologist and the AustralianGroup 1 winner (My) Kingdom of Fife (GB). Of course the Lane=s End stallion=s highly impressiveworldwide tally of Grade I/Group 1 winners featuressuch notable sons as Lemon Drop Kid, King=s Best,Alkaased, Student Council, El Condor Pasa and KingKamehameha, as well as such outstanding fillies asRussian Rhythm and Divine Proportions. KingKamehameha has been Japan=s champion sire for thelast two years, while King=s Best has sired Derbywinners in Britain and Japan, so Kinglet should have afuture as a stallion if he can build on his Meydan groupsuccess. Kingmambo sired that tough and talented fillyVoodoo Dancer from a Danzig mare and Kinglet is outof a grand-daughter, by the GI Breeders= Cup Milewinner War Chant. War Chant=s record as a stallion has to be considereddisappointing in view of the opportunities he originallyreceived. He has only two winners at the highest levelon the flat to his credit in the major racing countries, one being last year=s GI Santa Anita Derby winnerMidnight Interlude, the other being the G1 National S.winner Kingsfort. However, Kinglet=s dam Karen=sCaper very nearly became a third Grade I winner for himin the years she carried the colors of Stonerside Stable. Having won the G3 Nell Gwyn S., one of the main trialsfor the G1 1,000 Guineas, Karen=s Caper finished arespectable fourth of 20 in the Classic. She then lostthe G1 Coronation S. by the narrowest margin and latersuffered a similar fate on her American debut, whenshe just failed to catch Sweet Talker in the GI QueenElizabeth II S. Karen=s Caper went on to add a couple of Grade III successes as a 4-year-old, at up to 1 1/16 miles, and this consistent filly has to beconsidered unlucky not to have won something better.

Caulfield cont. Kinglet=s victory came a day after Godolphin hadannounced the retirement of that grand filly BlueBunting. Coincidentally, both of these Godolphinperformers come from the same female line, each ofthem having the French filly Miss Satin as their fourthdam. I am glad to have the opportunity to write about thisfemale line, as Blue Bunting=s achievements of winninglast year=s G1 1,000 Guineas, G1 Irish Oaks and G1 Yorkshire Oaks marked her out as somethingspecial. At the time I opted to write about other horses,as I had already written about two other members ofDynaformer=s 2008 crop. Miss Skyscraper, the fifth dam of Kinglet and BlueBunting, was one of the foundation mares of the lateJean-Luc Lagardere=s highly successful racing andbreeding operation. Even though this tough filly hadwon the Kempton 1,000 Guineas Trial and earned aTimeform rating of 110, she was bought for as little as7,600gns. She rewarded her buyer with the Group 2winner Mister Ski and with Miss Satin, who producedthe G1 Prix Jacques le Marois winner Miss Satamixa toLinamix, who also sired Blue Bunting=s dam Miarixa.Miss Satin=s daughters also included Mrs Annie, whoproduced group winners to three different stallions, plusa Group 1 performer to a fourth. The Group 1performer, Mrs Arkada, is the second dam of BlueBunting. Miss Skyscraper=s family continues to flourish.Bonfire, the highly regarded English colt who featuredin a TDN >In Sharper Focus= piece Jan. 26 (click here), isout of a granddaughter of Miss Satin. Bonfire=s seconddam Miss d=Ouilly is the third dam of Kinglet. Kinglet=s family arrived in the U.S. with the purchaseof his second dam, Miss Caerleona. Only a listed-placedwinner in France, this daughter of Caerleon did well inher new home, notably winning the GIII Cardinal H.,and she was also runner-up in a Grade II over a mile and a half. Miss Caerleona continued the good work after shejoined the Stonerside broodmare band, producing theGrade II winner Miss Coronado in addition to Karen=sCaper. Kinglet has yet to tackle more than a mile, but there=sgood reason to think that he will stay a mile and aquarter. After all, Kingmambo=s Grade I/Group 1 scorersinclude winners of the Belmont S., St. Leger, JapaneseDerby, Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, Epsom Oaks, JapanCup, Pacific Classic and Caulfield Cup.

WONDER ACUTE AIMS FOR FEBRUARY UPSET The first Group 1 on the Japanese racing calendar isset for this Sunday, and while Transcend (Jpn) (WildRush) will be a short price to repeat in the G1 FebruaryS. at Tokyo, there are a few outsiders worthy of a look. They include Wonder Acute (Jpn) (Charismatic), a horsewith an American dirt pedigree top and bottom, being ason of the dual Classic winner Charismatic out of thePleasant Tap mare Wonder Heritage. As a 5-year-oldlast year, Wonder Acute hit his best stride, winning theG2 Tokai T. V. Tokai S. at Kyoto in May. After a six-month absence, he ran a non-threatening fourth in theG3 Miyako S. at Kyoto Nov. 6, then ran a strongsecond to Transcend in the G1 Japan Cup Dirt Dec. 4.He came back to nearly register the win in the 2000-meter Tokyo Daishoten Dec. 29--a local Group 1 thathe missed by a nose to Smart Falcon (Jpn) (SmartFalcon {Jpn}). Wonder Acute now scales back to 1600meters for the February, one of the most prestigiousdirt races in Japan and, with a purse of roughly $2.45million, worth nearly $1.18 million to the winner. Amaximum field of 16 is expected; entries are takenThursday.

ADVANCES AT ARQANA FEBRUARY MIXED Buoyed by its largest catalogue ever, Arqana=sFebruary Mixed Sale concluded its one-session run atDeauville yesterday, with 204 head grossingi1,627,500. It was the sale=s largest aggregate sincethe 2007 renewal, which was bolstered by a i2.2-million yield from the dispersal of Haras de Saint-Pair-du-Mont=s stock. The dispersal of the bloodstock ofMme Sylvia Wildenstein dominated this year=s auction, aiding in significant increases in both median andaverage figures. The dispersal also included six of theday=s top 10 lots. Opening the sale with a bang, all of the dispersal=s 11offerings were sold for a total i413,500, at an averageof i37,591 and a median of i34,000. Top of the pile from the dispersal, and of the day=soverall trade, was hip 4s, the stakes winner and groupplaced Nickelle (Fr) (Sagamix {Fr}), who sold to the YESagency for i85,000. The 8-year-old mare, consignedby Haras de Victot, is a daughter of the Group I-winning hurdler N=Avoue Jamais (Fr) (Marignan), whogot proceedings under way as hip 1s when selling toEclipse Bloodstock for i48,000. Benefitting from an international presence--which

includedrepresentativesfrom Europe,North Africa andAsia--the much-improvedclearance rateforced theaverage up almost40% to i7,978,and the median upnearly 30% toi4,500. AThe goodNational Huntfamilies, such as

that of [Mme Sylvia Wildenstein=s] Neomenie, alwaysdraw the interest of breeders passionate about jumps,be they French, English or Irish,@ expressed a satisfiedArqana president Eric Hoyeau. AMme Wildenstein=sdispersal added momentum to the sale, for which thepercentage sold was 78.16, up almost 11% on 2011.These factors all point towards the February salemeeting its targets.@ The catalogue and full results can be viewed atwww.arqana.com.
