    Employment prospects

    The School of Architecture has an excellent employment recordfor its graduates who are well regarded by the profession. BA Architecture graduates have recently found year out placementsat well known UK practices such as Rogers Stirk Harbour andPartners, Grimshaw Architects and Make Architects as well as upand coming practices at home and abroad such as raumlaborberlin.

    In addition to following careers as practising architects and interiorarchitects, some of our graduates also choose to follow careers inrelated professions such as exhibition design, set design, threedimensional visualisation, academic research, project managementand architectural journalism.

    If you don't meet our formal entry requirements, or if you didn't do as well at A-level as you had expected, there is no need to give up hope. This Foundation programme could be just what you are looking for, as successful completion will guarantee you a place on one of the relateddegree courses in the Faculty.

    BUILT ENVIRONMENT FOUNDATION

    Equally, if you want to return tostudy after working for a while, but lack confidence, thisprogramme is designed to bring you up to speed. If you are anoverseas student, or if your firstlanguage is not English, you willalso find this programme ideallysuited to your needs as it willintroduce you to our way oflearning. In addition, you will findan excellent range of Englishlanguage courses on offer at Brookes.

    Whatever your background, the Foundation programme willgive you a good introduction touniversity life, widen yourhorizons and open up a host ofexciting career and lifeopportunities.

    Qualifications

    We are looking for students who show theyhave the potential to benefit from a universityeducation. Your personal statement is yourchance to convince us of your enthusiasmfor study. Showing us that you have apassion and commitment to embark ondegree-level study is taken in conjunctionwith your existing qualifications. You shouldalso indicate which degree you hope toprogress onto.

    You will need at least one (preferably two) A-level at D or above grade and in anysubject, or a BTEC qualification orvocational A-level, plus GCSE Maths andEnglish at grade C. If you are unsurewhether you have the qualifications to start,contact us for a chat.

    Progression to a BA or BSc

    Successful completion of the Foundationcourse can lead you on to one of the relateddegree courses in the Faculty.

    Architects are creative peoplewho use this skill to anticipateand meet the needs andaspirations of a world that ischanging technologically,culturally and physically. Theseneeds range from fundamentalissues such as shelter to theresolution of complex or large-scale projects that affect manydifferent interest groups.Whatever the challenge eachproject sets, an architecturaldesigner must provide theinspiration to generate a solutionand think in three-dimensionalspace to communicate theirproposal to others.

    Architecture is a creative and fulfillingprofession that is also challenging andrequires a broad range of skills andknowledge. It requires invention, practicalskill and technological expertise. Anarchitect must be able to think spatially andcommunicate their ideas to others verballyand visually. An architectural project involvesthe skilful management of people, time andresources.

    Architects work with clients, contractors,government bodies and specialists such asengineers, to design all aspects of our builtenvironment from very detailed fragments tolarge-scale urban interventions. They can beinvolved from the very beginning of a projectwhen it is just the germ of an idea and cansee it through both design and construction,even continuing to be involved after it isoccupied.

    The quality of the design of the builtenvironment affects everyone and thechallenge for architects is to respond in acreative and generous way to improve theplaces where people live and work.

    COURSE MODULES

    Year 1

    We encourage you to bring your ownindividual skills and knowledge to bear inyour design work. We believe in adopting anintegrated approach to design, balancingthe need for creativity and flair withtechnological knowledge and expertise.

    Design forms the core of the course andyou will be given the opportunity to developyour creativity from the beginning of thecourse. Design takes place in the designstudio which is where you will be based formuch of the time. Individual and groupdesign tutorials, reviews, presentations andworkshops take place in the studio. Thestudios are also used for design work,drawing both digitally and by hand, and

    small model making. The workshop isequipped with more specialised equipmentfor more complex model making orconstruction, and specialised printingfacilities are also available within thedepartment.

    Complementing this design studio activityare lectures, seminars, field trips,workshops and presentations. Assessmentmethods vary for each module but generallycomprise different forms of courseworksuch as project work, presentations,reports, essays, group work and practicalassignments.

    In year one you will learn the fundamentalsof architectural design including designingthree-dimensionally, in context, to scale anddeveloping an architectural brief. Designskills are supported by the parallel teachingof representational techniques such asarchitectural drawing and model making.You will also be introduced to architecturalhistory and theory, the principles oftechnology, and learn about the architectsrole in society.

  • Year 2

    In years two and three, you will be asked toexpress a preference for which verticaldesign unit to join. In a unit, students inyears two and three are taught together andpursue an area of study set by their unittutors, although the design of projects istailored to the different needs of years twoand three.

    In year two, design projects will increase incomplexity to those tackled in year one. Forexample, the nature or sequence of spacesand complexity of the brief or context willincrease. As in year one, representationaltechniques are taught in parallel to design,with Digital Culture in year two. Theprecedents of technology are taught, as areissues in History and Theory and a culturalcontext module about cities, culture andsociety.

    Year 3

    In year three, design projects increase incomplexity once more, building upon theknowledge gained in the previous two years.You will be asked to change to a differentvertical unit to broaden your understandingof different approaches to architecturaldesign. The practice of technology is taughtin year three and this involves anincreasingly thorough integration of it intoyour design work than in previous years.You will be asked to choose an area ofinterest to you and write a dissertation onthat subject. There is also a module calledPreparation for Practice that will provide agrounding in professional knowledge.

    After you graduate

    Students wishing to go into architecturalpractice will need to gain practicalexperience, usually by spending a yearworking in an architectural firm. They willthen go on to complete a two-year Diplomain Architecture. During the diploma year,students may specialise or opt forpostgraduate research. Careers then openup in any aspect of architecture, which is adiverse and dynamic profession.

    What do you think of the course now you're here?

    Fantastic. The University is full of opportunities andchallenges for those daring enough to seek them.The School of Architecture is exciting and forwardthinking. The community in the studio is joyful andfull of energy.

    What are your plans for when you'vecompleted your course, for work or furtherstudy?

    Complete a placement year at a London practiceand continue my architectural education.

    What are the best bits of studying at Brookes?

    The option of taking Independent Study modules.Last semester an independent study inarchitecture of film inspired me to apply forundergraduate research funding as part of ascheme set up at the Reinvention Centre forUndergraduate Research, in the School ofArchitecture. My entry was successful andawarded 2,000 to complete further research.

    What advice do you have for others?

    Be sure to take full advantage of the societies andcommunities at Brookes University. Joining theBrookes TV society, run from the media school,gave me an opportunity to flex my filming fingersby creating a piece for a local TV station.Conversely, if there is nothing that grabs yourinterest, take advantage of the enthusiastic studentbody and start up your own society. This year Iwas part of small group that set up an independentstudent newspaper. A whirlwind ride throughfundraising, creating and designing, aided byBrookes' friendly staff and top notch facilities.Brookes is blooming with opportunities.

  • Interior Architecture is an exciting new discipline and one of the bestestablished programmes in the country. Interior Architecture at OxfordBrookes University is among the founding members of IE/Interior Educators the UKs leading association of academic excellence in this field of research.

    INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE BA (HONS)

    The programme is taught within the Schoolof Architecture (part of the Faculty ofTechnology, Design and environment) butthe design and product design technologycomponents are specific to interiors. You willbe taught in purpose-designed studios by adedicated team of staff in conjunction withvisiting critics and lecturers from the worldof practice. As a relatively new field we arelooking to define the role and scope ofinterior architecture, experimenting with theavailable knowledge and where possibleexpanding it.

    As a programme we believe that interiorarchitecture cannot be seen as the creationof a series of still lives, but rather it gainsmeaning and significance through itsoccupation and use. This shift of focus fromthe object of the architecture to thesubject of the occupant places a newemphasis on position, time, view andreaction that the project induces. It alsoquestions conventional methods ofrepresentation.

    As an Interior Architecture student, you willbe expected to work in a group andindividually, to express yourself using avariety of media, both digital and material, todevelop and build a series of prototypedetails and to carry out a sustained level ofresearch which develops into designpropositions. Other elements of theprogramme such as history and theory,digital culture and preparation for practicedraw on the expertise of the School ofArchitecture, giving you the opportunity tomeet and discuss with students from thearchitecture programmes. These links willensure you are part of the intensely vibrantand forward-thinking undergraduateprogramme.

    The real strength of the School is the energyand enthusiasm of both the students andstaff. This is maintained in a friendly butquestioning atmosphere.

    Accreditation

    This is a professionally oriented programmethat takes three academic years (sixsemesters) full-time to complete. A part-timeroute is also available. The programmeoffers a BA Hons in Interior Architecture(please note that it does not offer RIBA Part1 in Architecture).

    International links

    Interior Architecture supports an activeinternational student exchange programme.In recent years we have welcomed studentsfrom Paris, Rome and the Bauhaus atWeimar and we are planning a series ofinternational links with compatibleprogrammes abroad. To encourage theunderstanding of different cultures andpractice of architecture and interior design,each year we offer a one-week field trip toan international city.

    After you graduate

    Students from the course have gone on to avariety of career paths, mainly intoarchitectural or interior design practices.However we have also had graduates goinginto production design, stage design, eventmanagement and architectural journalism.Several students have chosen to continuetheir studies with masters programmes orpostgraduate programmes, includingdiploma in Architecture.

    COURSE CONTENT

    Year 1

    The first year is a shared studio-based yearwhich is run jointly with first year students ofArchitecture. Design is taught through theformulation of architecture and interior designproposals, using conceptual and realisticprojects, which will develop your criticalperception and improve your communicationtechniques both graphically and verbally. Thispart of the programme aims to bring allstudents to a shared level of knowledge,understanding and skill in design.

    Year 2

    The second year of the course focuses onthe development of a personal design approach and its application to interior architecture, and the development of a

    critical approach to the histories and theories of spatial design. Projects will focuson the design of new public space andprivate interior space, and the re-use ofexisting building fabric.

    Year 3

    The third year of the course is designed toprepare you for practice by providing arealistic working scenario in which thestudents are able to have regular meetingswith clients, experts and technical staff todraw inspiration and operative knowledge.In the second semester you will completeyour final comprehensive design project anda dissertation on a subject of your choice.

    INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE WHATS BEEN SAID...

    The range of teaching and learning techniques waslaudable, with ample opportunity for both groupinterchange and development of individual skills. There was some very sophisticated spatial work beingcarried out by the first year students. The second yearwork was both exciting and intriguing in its ambitionand its realisation. The new practice project in the thirdyear was especially successful. The teaching team, stillas enthusiastic and committed, should be commendedon the emerging high quality of work across the threeyears of the course.

    The portfolio is an opportunity todemonstrate a sense of you as avisually creative person. We areeager to see a wide range in yourcreative ability. At OxfordBrookes University we value thisand only consider students whohave provided a portfolio.Therefore it is important yourportfolio is as diverse aspossible. Do not underestimatethis competitive process and weask for a portfolio that containswork illustrating your creativityrather than your technical ability.

    Presenting your work

    We would expect to see at least 1520pieces of work as a minimum. Feel free toinclude any kind of work you have done andwe suggest a mix of both A-level and otherpersonal work (non-A-level). The portfolioshould be legible and in order.

    We do not expect everyone to haveeverything this is NOT a tick box exercise.However we are keen to see your point ofview. What kind of architectures you findexciting. Show your passions, commitmentand ambition as an individual to creativeendeavour. Architecture is a challengingsubject so show initiative. Surprise us.

    We understand that some of your work mayeither have been submitted for A-levelexaminations or be too large for you tobring, in which case we ask for clear andfocused photographs.
