Learn more about central Bhutan at: http://www.tourism.gov.bt/map/central-bhutan
Zhemgang is a region blessed with incredibly rich biodiversity. Its lush forests are home to 22 endangered animal species including the Golden Langur. Though much of the district has warm and humid climatic conditions, its northern regions have moderately cool temperatures.
The inhabitants of Zhemgang are famous for their rich culture, particularly their folk songs and dances and for their skill making traditional Bhutanese handicrafts.

The Royal Manas National Park is the oldest nature preserve in the Kingdom of Bhutan. Its incredible biodiversity includes hundreds of rare animal and plant species. The park is the most biologically diverse protected area in the kingdom as well as one of the most outstanding nature preserves worldwide.
It was designated as a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1964 and now forms one of the most essential parts of the Bhutan Biological Conservation Complex, an extensive system of protected areas and biological corridors covering over 50% of the Kingdom’s landmass. This pristine, unexplored, natural treasure has now been opened to tourists with the aim of promoting community-based ecotourism in the region.
Manas is home to countless exotic and endangered species like the Royal Bengal Tiger, Asian Elephant, Greater One-horned Rhinoceros, Clouded Leopard, Gangetic Dolphin and the rare Golden Langur.
More than 365 species of birds have been officially recorded in the Park of which 16 are
endemic species. About 50 species of reptiles and 11 species of snakes inhabit the park. These include the Vine Snake, Flying Snake, the Banded Krait and the King Cobra.
Many of the park’s more than 900 types of plants have commercial, medicinal, traditional or religious significance. There are various species of bamboo, rhododendrons and orchids.

Zhemgang Dzong was constructed during the 12th century by a renowned Drukpa Kagyu scholar named Lam Zhang. The Dzong is located atop a steep ridge overlooking the Mangde Chhu river. The Dzong was renovated in the 1960’s during the reign of the Third King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. The Dzong is a large, squat structure typical of traditional Bhutanese design.

Buli Lhakhang
Social cultural function
Buli Lhakhang is located on a small knoll overlooking Chumme valley. It was originally founded during the 15th century but was extended during the early 20th century. Recently the temple has been renovated and restored to a pristine state.
Buli lhakhang has three main temples and displays beautifully decorated pillars, statues and paintings dating back to the 15th century.
Buli plays an important role for all of this part of the Chhume valley and holds a festival the Bula Mani every two years on the 16th day of the first month of the Bhutanese calendar.

The annual Zhemgang Tshechu will be held for four days from the 7-10th of April. While it is a relatively new Tshechu that was introduced during the reign of the Third King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck it holds special appeal for visitors as very few foreigners at-tend this remote festival. Travelers attending the fes-tival will be able to experience traditional Bhutanese masked dances and rituals in a very personal and in-timate atmosphere

This festival takes place at a very unique Chorten in the district of Trashiyangtse. It will take place from the 16th-30th of March 2014. The Chorten is one of the most sacred sites in Bhutan and every year pilgrims travel to attend the festival from as far as the state of Arunachal Pradesh in India. The temple dates back to 1740 and according to legend a young girl from Tamang willingly allowed herself to be buried within the Chorten. It is believed that the girl was a Khando or Dakini.
