October 16th saw the arrival of over 100 new potential Team Bath Racing members down to the build room.The event, designed to give first year students an insight into the world of Formula Stu-dent, allowed the new stu-dents to speak to the current final-year team members about being involved in this year’s car and have any of their questions about the competi-tion answered.As well as being able to engage with the current team and learn all about the 2015 project, students had the opportunity to sit in the 2014 car and try their hand in our simulator.

The welcome evening was then followed by our Chassis Design Chal-lenge, over a 3 day period, for all the new members.Here, the new students were tasked with building a scaled spaceframe chas-sis out of wooden dowels and polystyrene balls. The chassis were then tested for torsional stiffness, with the most suc-cessful team winning free Team Bath Racing t-shirts and the opportunity to attend the next test session as safety mar-shalls.It was a successsful evening, with many students getting involved and being shown the thought processes required to

design part of the car.The next few weeks will now see many new members take on smaller roles in the team, shadowing final-year students on projects such as carbon fibre wheels, the re-build of TBR13 and the design and manufactur of some car setup tools.

Several members of Team Bath Racing were honoured to rep-resent the team at this year’s Williams F1 Open Day. Williams F1, a long-standing partner of TBR, invited mem-bers of the team to attend the event and bring the 2014 car with them for a display.

Set up in one of the race bays, the team spoke to

eager members of the Williams team and toured the factory, with a huge level of interest being generated for Team Bath Racing and the 2014 car. All this interest, despite being surrounded by parts from current and ex For-mula One cars, as well as a

dismantled FW18 from 1996 in an adjacent race bay! Visitors were encour-aged to sit TBR14, with everyone from ages 8 to 80 taking the opportu-nity to climb inside the student-built car.

One of the current team mem-bers, Jake Reid, who did his industrial placement at Williams, was on hand to show the team around the factory giving an insight into life at Williams.The team left the factory with an even greater love of the Williams F1 team - many of whom are hoping to return to the factory at some point in their careers. Team Bath Racing would like to congratulate Williams F1 on a fantastic 2014 F1 season so far and to thank them for a fan-tastic day out for the team!

WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS

Team Bath Racing are thrilled to announce a new technical partnership with Halla Visteon Climate Control (HVCC), a world leader in the design and manufacture of heat exchang-ers, for the development of bespoke radiators and inter-cooler for the 2015 car. Their expertise has contribut-ed towards a vast range of vehicles, from the ground breaking McLaren P1 hyper-car, to the award win-ning Ford EcoBoost. We believe this makes them the perfect partner as we embark on our all-new powertrain system for our 2015 entry. With the move to our brand new, boosted KTM 500 EXC engine, it is fundamental that we thoroughly understand

the cooling requirements for the engine, making sure to size the radiator and inter-cooler accordingly. As a result, HVCC will be working closely with Ryan Marsh, our Cooling System Engineer, to design, simulate and validate our radiator per-formance, ensuring correct cooling targets are achieved. We will be using HVCC’s test facilities to obtain key perfor-mance data for a variety of cores, feeding this into our development cycle. This will allow us to refine the design and ensure we meet our tight packaging and weight con-straints, whilst maintaining sufficient cooling for our criti-cal powertrain components. Team Bath Racing would like

On 17th October, Infiniti Red Bull Racing's Head of Technical Partnerships, Al Peasland, gave a special presentation and Q&A on "Bringing a For-mula One Car to Life" to a packed lecture theatre. The talk included an overview of Red Bull Racing and its path to success over the past 10 years - demonstrating the lengths gone to and the preci-sion needed to manufacture the car. He also spoke about the areas that Formula One would be focussing on in the future, such as fuel and lubri-

cation tech-nology, and about the opportunities for students to get involved in the sport.It was inspiring for students to hear about the immense amount of team work and engineering expertise within a Formula One team and Team Bath Racing were extremely proud to host the event. The team also had the opportunity to speak with Al personally and show him around the build room. Both the TBR14

car and the RB6, Red Bull’s first championship winning formu-la one car, were showcased at the event and drew some admiring looks. Both Team Bath Racing and the University of Bath would again like to thank Al for giving an enter-taining and informative pre-sentation about life in Formula One!

After many weeks and a lot of effort from our dyno team, we finally have the new engine, a single cylinder KTM 500, installed on our in-house test bed and running for the first time. Changing the engine has pre-sented a large number of chal-lenges, as the previous Aprilia engine has been used for mul-tiple years; the dyno infastruc-ture has been completely changed to install the new engine.The engine mounts, both the intake and the exhaust system and the driveline on the dyno all had to be adapted, whilst the sensors and other cell

systems had to be set up for their new purposes. With the engine installed, the dyno testing area has been tidied up and reorgan-ised to provide a clear work-ing space for the chalenges that lie ahead. TBR15 member Will Charles and TBR16 member Josh Slade are currently working hard to produce a baseline calibration map for the naturally aspirated engine - critical for all further work carried out on the engine. With the naturally aspirated engine running well, we intend to have a forced induction installation after Christmas, which should see the development of the turbo-

charged engine. As well as going turbo-charged, the team hopes to make the change from petrol to E85 fuel.You will continue to hear the reverberating sounds of our new single cylinder emanating from our little corner of the workshop over the coming weeks
