• Top of the Pops magazine is a magazine based on the pop genre of music.

• It is aimed at girls between the ages of 11-15 years.• It is mainly read by girl as 85% of the readers are female

whereas only 15% of the readers are male. • It is published every month and popular with young girls.

History!

• It was first published in February 1995.• It was originally marketed as the missing link between NME

and Smash Hits magazine. However over the years its format and contents has changed, in which the masthead has even changed its appearance this is because different editors have taken over, including Peter Lorraine, Corrina Schaffer, Rosalie Snaith. The current editor is Peter Hart.

• It was published after the TV show.

• The main content of this magazine includes celebrity gossip, cringes, fashion and beauty advice, articles on pop and movie stars, quizzes, horoscopes, posters and song lyrics.

• The magazine is generally happy cheery and bright. It is based on pop music and suggests innocence in young girls as it is a pre teen magazine. Intrests in celebrities and ‘teen stars’.

• It is published weekly.• It is an American magazine specializing in chart music

mainly regardless of genre i.e. mainstream music.• It is one of the oldest trade magazines in the world. • It made be a U.S magazine but it is still sold in the U.K.• It has several international music charts, these track the

most popular songs and albums on a weekly basis. The two most notable are ‘Billboard Hot 100’ and ‘Billboard 200’.

History!• Founded on the 1st November 1894 by William h. Donaldson and James Hennegan.• It was originally a trade paper called ‘Billboard Advertising’.• Began coverage of motion pictures in 1909 and radio in the 1920’s. • In the 1930’s it started to publish music charts as the jukebox had been introduced.• The 1950’s it introduced a section covering the television industry. • It carried new of fairs, carnivals, theme parks and other outdoor entertainment until

1961. • At the start of 1961 the magazine was mainly based on music and renamed Billboard

Music Week. • 1963, it changed simply to Billboard. • January 4th, 1936 it published it’s first music chart ‘Hit parade’, July 20th 1940 the first

music popularity chart was calculated. • Since August 4th 1958, the ‘Hot 100’ has been published combining single sales and

radio airplay.
