Task 6 The task is to choose a musical genre/genres to feature in your magazine. List the names of bands/artists that are part of this genre, a brief history of the genre and the type of imager associated with it. Genre – Hip hop The genre in which I’m going to base my magazine upon is the hip hop genre. The reason I’ve chose this is because it’s a good genre to convey male men in an aggressive way which can create good conventions and connection to its audiences which will attract readers. The Hip hop genre is a form of music expression and artistic culture that originated in African-American and Latino communities during the 1970s in New York City, specifically the Bronx. Task 6

The task is to choose a musical genre/genres to feature in your magazine. List the names of bands/artists that are part of this genre, a brief history of the genre and the type of imager associated with it.

Genre – Hip hopThe genre in which I’m going to base my magazine upon is the hip hop genre.

DJ Afrika Bambaataa outlined the four pillars of hip hop culture: MCing, DJing, breaking and graffiti writing. Other elements include beatboxing.

Since its emergence in the South Bronx, hip hop culture has spread around the world. Hip hop music first emerged with disc jockeys creating rhythmic beats by looping breaks (small portions of songs emphasizing a percussive pattern) on two turntables, more commonly referred to as sampling. This was later accompanied by "rap", a rhythmic style of chanting or poetry presented in 16 bar measures or time frames, and beatboxing, a vocal technique mainly used to imitate percussive elements of the music and various technical effects of hip hop DJ's. An original form of dancing and particular styles of dress arose among fans of this new music. These elements experienced considerable refinement and development over the course of the history of the culture.

The relationship between graffiti and hip hop culture arises from the appearance of new and increasingly elaborate and pervasive forms of the practice in areas where other elements of hip hop were evolving as art forms, with a heavy overlap between those who wrote graffiti and those who practiced other elements of the culture. Today, graffiti remains part of hip

Imagery associated with Hip hopThe imagery associated within Hip hop is stereotypically male dominance and that women are portrayed as sexual proactive objects. The image created from the men is that they’re strong, rough, violent men and they often have tattoos or are muscular. This is done to attract the audience of the Hip hop genre because they’re inspired by these figures.

Hip hop has often been associated with violence and poverty but as the genre is starting to become more mainstream artists are starting to become more sensitive and less aggressive. Fewer artists are being portrayed as ‘gangster’ characters and are focusing more on the view of the music.

To conclude this section of my research, I’m going to take the modern view of Hip hop and combine it with the older style to create a strong male but in a less aggressive view. I will do this by taking features from ‘Vibe’ magazine and other Hip hop sources to create a strong front cover, contents page and article.
