For our 1st XI, the year will be a particularly memorable one. Their second placing on the season ladder in the New England 1st Grade competition has reinforced our reputation as a quality football club and the legacy of that will be felt in future years. Beyond the New England, the team also deserves congratulations on winning the NCIS competition and having no less than nine players selected in the NCIS representative team to play in the Combined Independent Schools carnival in Sydney. The significance of playing at this level can be gauged by the fact that the NCIS team held the Combined GPS 1st XI scoreless at half time, eventually going down by just two goals to this formidable team. With the bulk of the 1st XI returning next year and a fresh talent pool on tap from the 16A premiers, there is every reason to think that 2014 will be a season to look forward to.

HEADMASTER, MURRAY GUEST

Myall ClassicLast weekend a team of TAS students, parents and staff, along with two students from PLC, travelled south for the Myall Classic canoe event. For most this was an important step in their preparation for the Hawkesbury Classic next term and the tough conditions made it especially good training. Strong tides and wind for most of the event meant a good number of boats did not make the cut-off time at the 13.5km mark and were turned around, so to have all the TAS team finish was an achievement in itself.

I offer particular congratulations to Harry Wright and David Williams who won the 47km Junior Men’s Double, Duncan and Lachie McDonald who won the 47km Father/Son Double and Felix Gifford who won the 27km Junior Men’s Single.

TAS FootballIt was no surprise that there was a particularly buoyant mood in the McConville Centre on Monday as players, coaches and parents marked the conclusion of an historic football season at the annual Football dinner. 2013 has seen the formation of The TAS Football Club, a new ‘TAS Dads’ team take to the field in the 3rd Grade competition and TAS grow into the 3rd largest football club in the New England. TAS fielded four teams in grand finals this year and I offer particular congratulations to the 16A XI on their premiership. There were plenty of thanks on offer on Monday night to the many supporters of TAS Football who have given so much in 2013 and I particularly recognise our President Brad Evans, MiC Luke Polson and 1st XI coach Richard Newton for their work.

CHAPLAIN, RICHARD NEWTON

The Bible - 1 Corinthians 13I have colleague who doesn’t have mirrors around their house, if you knew who it was I’m talking about you would understand why. However, they do have a bathroom mirror, and they were telling me that when their kids were little if they picked up their child and allowed them to see themselves they were completely besotted with themselves – they had such a fascination with what they found in the mirror. My cat, Topsy, did something similar the other day, we had left a sliding door slightly ajar, and on the other side of the door was a mirror waiting to be hung. Now I didn’t realise that the mirror was there until after about an hour and a half of the cat sitting on edge looking into through the crack that the door had left, I realised it was the mirror holding her attention, but this time it wasn’t vanity – just fear, she was poised on edge, ready to pounce if need be. A clear sharp image projected back from a mirror can bring great delight, or fear and trembling. In the end I am glad we live in the age that we do. We have good quality mirrors, we don’t live in the first century when if you looked into a mirror you would see a blurry and hazy image – you would only get a glimpse of what reality looked liked. Not us, we get a sharply defined, clear image. As our series following the metanarrative of the Bible comes to a conclusion, we finish with one point from the school lesson. We live in a time in which God has revealed much, in fact all we need for salvation, but we do not know everything, that time is yet to come, and it is the promise that awaits fulfilment.Paul tells us; that we wait to fully know, just as we are fully known. This does not imply that we know ourselves and one day we will know God in the same way. It says we are fully known. We are passive in this, God fully knows us, and one day we will know Him in the same way.For now these three remain: faith in God, the hope that He will keep His promises, and we love, just as we have been loved.

Our successes were impressive results wise, although far greater was the success of our teams in terms of improvement, commitment and support of one another both on and off the field. I thank all our students for their generosity of spirit that has enabled them to enrich the life of our school more broadly and look forward to their ongoing contributions and successes in years to come.

Referee SuccessIn a wonderful achievement Jock Campbel, Year 9 was named New England Football's, Junior Referee of the Year. This comes on the back of jock's commitment to the school within the co-curricular program.

HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL, MARK HARRISON

Well, We’ve Made ItLooking back, some weeks (especially those in the middle of the term) have felt longer than others; others have been busier than most; some have been supremely easy and the odd few have been a little difficult. However by the time you read this, all will have been completed, your sons seem fine, have achieved a great deal they can be happy about and after ten weeks they’re still cheerful enough, probably because they’ll be with you soon. With the support of the Middle School staff, I’ve enjoyed myself immensely. As a staff we’ve managed to formulate a Year 7 academic scope and sequence for the 2014 academic year. Having completed the Year 6 one earlier this term, we now have the Year 8 one to finalise and there’s the whole of next term to achieve this goal. Our Curriculum Coordinator, Cindy Barnsley, has been instrumental here and with Home Room Teachers’ assistance she’s managed to complete rather more than we were expecting in far less time than we thought possible.

The new curriculum is designed, in line with accepted Middle School philosophy, to be more integrative and coherent so that next year’s students should, ideally, be able to make ‘sense of the connection between school experiences and their daily lives…in order that they can reflect on the totality of their experiences’ (Vars). In short, their school work, especially in the humanities, will be connected, more relevant to them as young adolescents and not divorced from their needs and interests as people who are actually growing up. As indicated earlier in the term, to be in this position on the cusp of new Australian curriculum is exciting for me. I’m one of those weird people who actually enjoys reading about curriculum change.

I’m also one of those people who’s energised (sometimes at considerable personal expense, but this is to be expected) by adolescent foibles, sensitivities and sensibilities. As adults we can learn resilience from young people. For those of you who suspect I’m too maudlin for my own good, I hasten to add that I’m also amused by adolescent silliness because, more often than not, it isn’t motivated by malice: rather it’s something that just happens in thoughtless moments and the best thing adolescents comprehend is that it happens so that they can learn from their own mistakes. These boys I’ve been ‘charged’ with are reasonably unaffected and this is a normal, indeed endearing, characteristic of their age. They shouldn’t be expected to be adults till they have to be. It’s because of their difference from older adolescents that the Middle School is necessary at TAS and you’re lucky that your boys are students here.

They’re Lucky TooYou’ve done it again…today I went to the end-of-season Under 14s Rugby presentations at the McConville Centre. There were so many parents, many of whom travelled a considerable distance, present at this function. This was like Newington revisited! You must have to plan ahead to be everywhere seemingly at the one time. While I know you obviously enjoy doing this, there must be times when you limit your own social and work schedules to be with the boys. But I think you should continue the efforts because staff and, especially, the boys really appreciate your support. I’m understanding now that so many of you travelled to Sydney on the four occasions this term when the boys played rugby there. Perhaps you deserve your term break as much as the boys deserve their holiday! On behalf of everyone here, thank you. I hope your holiday is both enjoyable and restful.

Fourth TermIt’s going to be fast and furious. Amongst other things, it will involve: new summer sports selections and commitments; new subject lines will be published for the 2014 Year 9 cohort; a bivouac for cadets; annual cadet camp for boys in Years 7 and 8; a Mosman Prep visit for the Year 6 students. It will also involve a battery of end-of-course exams for all Middle School students. Quite a number of boys are apprehensive around exam weeks and the best advice I can give you is to encourage your sons to prepare for them to the best of their ability, to take the prospect of them seriously and to be aware of the fact that all that is expected of them is the effort to do a ‘personal best’. Worrying unduly about them won’t make the exams ‘go away’.

Sports News - CIS Athletics (from Mrs Kirsty Brunsdon)Two Middle School athletes travelled to Sydney to compete in the CIS Primary competition on Wednesday 11th September. They have achieved outstanding results and should be very proud of their efforts. Nic Ward competed in the Senior boys Discus where he placed 4th, with a terrific throw of 30.50m and also the Turbo Javelin, in which he was placed 9th. This is an outstanding achievement for this young man.Jason O’Keefe competed in the Senior boys shot-put where he gained a terrific 5th placing. In the Senior Discus he gained a 9th and in the High Jump he was awarded a very respectable 20th position.I am very excited to announce that both boys have broken TAS records in their achievements in Sydney. Nic broke Harri Jackson’s discus record of 26.51m set in 2011 and Jason broke Will Brissett’s shot-put record of 9.17m set in 2010.Congratulations to both boys on these wonderful achievements and thanks go to Nic’s mother, Kellie, who was always at training in the lead up to both NCIS and CIS and gave of her time to help coach, not only Nic, but other athletes competing in the discus and shot-put events.

HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL, IAN LLOYD

From Ian Lloyd

Congratulations for Academic AchievementI would like to mention the performance of Jack van Roy who will be receiving a prize for his exceptional performance in the Australian Maths Competition. Jack was placed in the top 0.5 % of his cohort in Australia in this competition which is an absolutely outstanding result.Additionally, in recent ICAS Competitions we have achieved some excellent results. In Spelling, with 13 credits or better, congratulations go to Matthew Wark and Jack Nivison for the achieving Distinctions. In Maths with 14 credits or better, congratulations go to Harrison Price and Thomas Wu for achieving Distinctions and particularly Jack van Roy for his High Distinction. Lastly in English, with 23 credits or better, congratulations go to Lucy Caldwell, Casey Smith, Finn Daugherty, Alexander Gibson, Isabel McBean, Tristan Rottcher, Charley Game-Lopata, Jacob Smith for achieving Distinctions and particular congratulations to Angus Alford and Oliver Fletcher who achieved High Distinctions.

Combined Independent Schools’ AthleticsTravelling away to compete at this level in any sport can be a very daunting task, but it is a wonderful experience and I am very pleased that our largest contingent of athletes were able to take part this year. Special mention goes to Oscar Henzell who managed a personal best which broke a long-standing TAS record in his discus. There is a further report later in this edition, but I congratulate all those who trained hard and participated at this significant level of competition.

Parent/Teacher InterviewsThese have now been completed and I know just how valuable this exchange is for both parents and teachers. This opportunity is a very important one and in thanking all involved, I would also welcome feedback about the system now that it has been in use for some time.

Downloaded Software on LaptopsLast Monday, IT staff and I went through the exercise of checking for applications that had been added since the students took possession of their laptops, especially applications that had been shared or downloaded. It was clear that quite a few had been downloaded and/or shared among the group and this was discussed. Each student was sent an email with a list of applications that existed in their home directory. I explained copyright to them as the right of the owner of a product (a song, artwork, game or idea) to make a copy and that others would have to pay for a copy if they wanted one. They have been asked to remove anything that falls into this category. The school does not rule against other applications or software which do not breach copyright unless we believe it to be inappropriate, but I recommend that parents show an interest in what type of games and material students do have on their machines. If you would like further help with this, or have questions, please contact me at School.

Valedictory – Thursday 19 September While our students will not be joining the procession (for some years), to gain a small appreciation of the meaning behind finishing school and being apart of the celebration is a significant occasion and I believe a valuable experience for them. Year 4 & 5 will therefore, be lining the front drive of the school at recess and will be required to wear formal uniform on the day.

Farewell to our Internship TeachersSam Bugden, Lucy Schneider and Stephanie Vella will all have completed their internships with us at the end of this term and I congratulate them for the progress they have shown during their time with us. Having the opportunity to assist new teachers is a complex and at times, demanding task but we have enjoyed having them in our rooms and in wishing them well, we look forward to hearing about their teaching in the future.

Junior School DiscoThere is no doubting that bringing the 70s back to TAS was a master stroke and last Friday’s social in the Hall proved just that. The mood was fantastic as the staff, parents and students jived to the likes of Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and James Brown. With Nasty T and PJ Diddy as our resident DJs, the dancing was continuous. It was great to see everyone join the fun from Transition to Year 5 and I thank all those involved with the organisation from supervision, the cooking of the BBQ to the decorating of the hall.

Wishing you all a safe and restful holidayAnd lastly, wherever you may find yourselves, I wish you all a restful and safe holiday, and hope that you and your family have the opportunity to relax and enjoy our beautiful spring weather. I look forward to seeing you all for the action packed term 4.

Dear Junior School FamiliesThis is our last week for the Christmas Child Appeal. We are very pleased with the amount of donations that we have received in the past five weeks and hope many more boxes will come in this week.

We have received 26 boxes so far. Please help us get many more boxes in this last week of term.

The theme for this week is personal hygiene. Some ideas might include toothbrush (no toothpaste), hairbrush, hair bands, soap etc. Please do not send in any liquids. Please ensure that the $9 donation is in your box. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Junior School Community for their support with our venture this term.

Class Absence Register - sign out/in sheetsJunior School has implemented a new system for recording the movements of students to and from class during the day. So that a record can be maintained in accordance with the expectations of the Board of Studies this operates when students need to travel off campus after arriving at school. The form outlines the information required and the register is kept on the reception desk in Junior School. No child is allowed to walk to the turning circle unaccompanied, please come into the Junior School for early departure or any appointments.

TAS TreblesThis group will resume rehearsals in Week 2 of Term 4 starting Mondays 8.00am upstairs in the Music building. Any student from Kinder to Year 5 who is keen to sing is very welcome to attend. Please direct any queries to Rachel Butcher or Alastair Finco.

CIS AthleticsTen primary athletes went to Sydney last Wednesday to represent NCIS at the NSWCIS competition. It is the first time we have sent so many athletes away which was very exciting for the school. Representing the school were Jonathan Harris (Yr 2) Isabella Rutledge (Yr 3), Asher Game-Lopata Yr 4), Harry Ashton (Yr 5), Charlie Rutledge (Yr 5), Chad Kliendienst (Yr 5), Joe Gordon (Yr 5), Oscar Henzell (Yr 5), Nic Ward (Yr 6) and Jason O’Keefe (Yr 6).Several athletes managed to add some events to their programme, due to other athlete’s illnesses or injuries, and this made the trip even more worthwhile.A huge congratulations to several boys who made the top 10 in their events, a fantastic achievement for any student at this level.Nic Ward placed 4th in the Senior boys discus (missing out on going through to the next level by 1cm), Jason O’Keefe came 5th in the Senior boys High Jump and Oscar Henzell placed 6th in the 11 Yrs boys Discus. All of these boys have also broken existing TAS records as well!Congratulations to all the participating athletes on their efforts. We have received lovely positive news regarding the athlete’s behaviour and the parent’s willingness to help out at CIS.Football Grand FinalsCongratulations to the 2 12s teams who made it into the grand finals on Saturday. The 12 A's and 12 B's have had a wonderful season and it was great to see the enthusiasm and enjoyment they get from playing as a team.Unfortunately neither team was successful but they were very close games and both teams should be very proud of how they played and the efforts they put into their games.

Football TAS Under 12 White-Alan MooreAlthough the team was defeated in the Great Final By Ex-Services on Saturday 2-0, every single player should be proud of their efforts in this game and the whole season. They had to win most of their games in the second half of the season even to make the semi-finals and to make the Grand Final is a wonderful achievement. Ex-Services were the better team on the day and fully deserved their victory. It’s difficult to single out any one player, however, Daniel Ramazani was very safe at the back, Albie Woodhouse showed attacking flair and Oscar Henzell was solid in goals.
