How to get to Tartu? By plane Tartu is situated in southern Estonia and connects to the world primarily through Tallinn, Estonia’s capital. The Tallinn international airport is located on the edge of the city, on the road to Tartu. Competitively priced direct flights from different cities in Europe to Tallinn can be found online at www.tallinn-airport.ee. The airport of Tartu (www.tartu-airport.ee), which has a direct connection with Helsinki, Finland, is located about 11 km from the centre of Tartu. Local AirportShuttle operates between the airport and city centre. There is also another opportunity to travel to Tartu via Riga International Airport.
By bus The distance between Tallinn and Tartu is 180 km and it will take approximately 2,5 hours to drive to Tartu, similar to reaching your conference location from the airport in most large cities in the world. Buses leave from Tallinn almost in every 30 minutes from 5.40 a.m. until 11.59 p.m. (www.tpilet.ee). The buses are comfortable and some offer snacks and drinks for sale and also free WiFi service. There is also a bus connection between Riga-Tartu (www.eurolines.com, www.ecolines.net, www.luxexpress.eu), St. Petersburg-Tartu and (www.luxexpress.eu) Pskov-Tartu (www.tpilet.ee).
By train Comfortable and fast diesel trains run 8 times a day between Tallinn and Tartu, both ways. These fast trains will take you within 2 hours to the destination. All the trains offer free WiFi service (www.elron.ee). Tartu-Valga-Tartu line gives you the opportunity for train connections to Riga (you can continue your train ride to Riga from Valga). For more information and schedules: www.elron.ee, www.pv.lv/en. AS GoRail which deals with international passenger transportation organizes the transportation of passengers on the Tallinn-Moscow-Tallinn and Tallinn-St. Petersburg-Tallinn lines. For more information and schedules: www.gorail.ee.

taRtu CityFirst mentioned: 1030Population: 98 449 Territory: 38,87 km2Ethnic composition: estonians 81.2%, russians 14.6%, other 4.2% Slogan: Heade mõtete linn – City of Good Thoughts The University of Tartu, founded in 1632, is the national university of Estonia. It is the biggest and highest-ranked university in Estonia.
1. Tartu is an education and research centre of Northern Europe since the 17th century. In 1632 the University of Tartu was established and today Tartu is well-known as Estonia´s intellectual capital. Through its scientists, Tartu is represented in numerous international organizations and Tartu University is in top 3% of the world´s best universities!
2. Tartu is also Estonia’s centre of medicine and science. It is home to the 200-year-old University Clinic, the largest complex of hospitals and laboratories in the country. It is no wonder that Tartuhas a tradition of organizing medical and biotechnology conferences. For example, the Estonian Genome Project (EGP), a research venture of the University of Tartu, is the third biggest such project world. The conferences that have taken place in the city have also played host[S3] to Nobel prize laureates.
3. Tartu is a fast developing and competitive city. Two-thirds of Estonian biotechnology companies and some of the largest Estonian software companies are based in Tartu and it has long traditions and high competence levelsin electronics, engineering, ICT and biotechnology. 4. The culture-rich Hanseatic city Tartu is a modern city with a rich historical heritage and culture. It is the cradle of the Estonian Song Festival, Estonian national theatre and the Estonian state; the intellectual capital of the country, where national awareness and culture were born. The city is also famous for its international events – Tartu Marathon, Tartu Hanseatic Days, Rally Estonia etc. More than 4000 events and festivals are held here during throughout the year – so you are sure to find something for everybody!
5. Tartu is also known for its numerous museums, which also carry on the idea of Tartu as a city of research and science. Science buffs can also make their acquaint-ance with the subject at the specialised Tartu museums such as the Ahhaa Science Centre, the Tartu University Museum and the Tartu Observatory, the Estonian National Museum, and in many places around Tartu County, such as Tõravere Observatory.
6. Tartu is a green, safe city where the lively bustle goes hand in hand with natural beauty. Besides many parks and hiking tracks, 11 km of one of Estonia’s longest rivers – the Emajõgi (Mother River) – flows through Tartu, offering visual beauty as well as many opportunities as a recreational waterway and event venue.
7. Tartu is a compact city and has a walking culture, which means that you can easily get from one point to another by foot. No need to use public transport: just stroll across Town Hall Square to your conference venue, hotel or wherever it is you need or want to go! It’s also worth visiting Tartu’s historic neighbourhoods – Supilinn and Karlova districts and Toome Hill, the latter being the site of the first settlement.
8. Tartu is an ideal place for conferences attended by 100-500 delegates, but it can accommodate gatherings with up to 1,000 delegates. The largest venues are Vanemuine Concert Hall (959 delegates), theatre Vanemuine (700), Dorpat Conference Centre (560) and Tartu University´s Assembly Hall (470). In addition, the Universiy of Tartu and University of Life Sciences buildings offer very many modern halls for up to 500 delegates. The city has all of the necessary lodging, dining, entertainment and other services for a successful conference.
9. Tartu is the capital of southern Estonia. Within several hours’ drive lie very distinctive regions that are worth discovering – windows on Estonian culture, history and natural heritage. One such place to visit is Setomaa– an ethnically and linguistically unique region, where the small local community still cling to their language, customs, cuisine, folklore and traditional folk costume; or the Onion Route – the region of Russian Old Believers, where three different cultures and histories – Estonian, Russian and German – mingle and offer you unforgettable emotions. You will find many interesting ideas for your pre- and post-tours in Tartu and South Estonia.
10. Tartu is closer than you think, as the comfortable intercity passenger trains and coaches make the kilometres go fast – free Wi-Fi in buses and trains allow you to spend the time working, communicating with friends, reading the newspaper or other pastimes.
why TarTu? Tartu is the second largest city in Estonia and the oldest in the Baltic States. It is economi-cally well-developed and has great historical heritage. Tartu has huge potential and all of the advantages it needs to become one of the most important conference tourism centres in

Part of the Cultural Quarter complex on the edge of Tartu’s Old Town, Tartu New Theatre has two halls and a small outdoor area. It is the year-round home of the Tartu New Theatre theatrical company and the Elektriteater art house cinema. The large hall of the theatre building has 135 permanent seats – a combination of soft cinema seats and folding chairs. With the needs of conferences in mind, the capacity can be extended to 200 seats by the addition of folding chairs and replacing the cinema seats. When a conventional seating arrangement is used, the black box type stage has an area of 100 square metres. The rehearsal hall is a seminar room style space that can be reconfigured easily as needed. The rehearsal hall holds an average of 30-60 people, depending on the configuration. Both halls are ready for screening films or other AV material that match the parameters of the space. Additional options may be available based on specific needs.

There are several museums along the route that provide an overview of the history of the area. Our farthest destination along the route is Setomaa – a unique ethnic and linguistic region. Tours of the main building of Tartu UniversityLanguages: Est, EnG, Rus, GER, Finorganizer: university of tartu art Museum, www.ut.ee/artmuseum, [email protected]
The Art Museum of the University of Tartu organises guided tours of the main building where visitors can step into the beautiful Neoclassical assembly hall, the 19th century student lock-up and the art museum. Visitors to the assembly hall, a space designed for observances of the most important events at the university, can enjoy one of the finest classicist interiors in Estonia. The guide will tell fascinating tales of the past illustrating the university’s storied history and introducing the construction of the main building in the early 19th century. The student lock-up, which dates also from the 19th century, is an historical gem that offers sharp contrast for those coming from the stately assembly hall. This small cell in the attic bears witness to the university’s long history. In this cell, students in the 19th century would serve punishment for violations of the university’s code. Today, this part of the tour introduces the university’s laws from that era, which might now seem large, and the guide will talk about what life was like in the lock-up. The university’s art museum introduces the history of the museum, which was established in 1803, and highlight various objects of note in the permanent exhibition. The tour lasts about an hour, and shorter tours in the main building can also be made if desired.
