Inside the Octagon Mark Perry General Manager - Events

As another Xmas rolls around and 2012 comes to an end it is time to reflect back on what are different times in the world of motor sport Like many business sectors motor sport is doing all it can to get through these times and often require thinking outside the boxrsquo at every level With four Targa events on offer these days itrsquos fair to say that our customers are spoiled for choice and can stay involved in the sport much easier than five years ago The flow on of this is that the large entry numbers seen particularly at Targa Tasmania could be a thing of the past Overall there are sti l l more active Targa competitors than any other national motor sport championship The increase in the amount of events has seen the targa family grow bigger each year but the biggest gain has been in the sports profile

No longer is Targa seen an annual event for enthusiasts having a leisurely drive We all know it was never that but the introduction of a CAMS and FIA approved Championship has made those outside our part of the sport stand up and take notice This combined with regular TV coverage is the great news story from 2012 and lays the foundations for a long and successful future that seersquos various manufacturers coming to us rather than the other way around and 2013 will see some new and very interesting vehicles competing for the first time In these tougher times everyone loves a story and there have been plenty circulating around the place about Targa Wrest Point not happening etc As I said to some people who asked me the question ldquoWhen was the last time a Targa event was cancelled Answer that and you have your answerrdquo

Our track record for delivery is unquestionable and it is this confidence that keeps our events the largest by a long way knowing when you enter a Targa event that you can then go and plan prepare and book everything with complete confidence that it wil l happen It always does This is the key reason that our Targa events continue to have great support given the current climate Over 160 cars competed at Targa High Country which was up ten on the year before and donrsquot ever forget that just six years ago that if you saw a field of 100 cars at a two day event it was considered a large field and a roaring success Continue Over Page

Yes Targa Wrest Point has seen a field of 148 cars in 2010 and will l ikely start with 100 in 2013 but this is only ten down on 2012 The reality is that 100 cars competing at any motorsport event is a big event and for most mainland competitors who are not running all four events Targa Wrest Point is the most expensive one to run given it is just two days of competition We all should be looking at 2010 as simply a better time economically and that the 2013 Targa Wrest Point will sti l l be larger than any other tarmac rally run in in the country barring our own So if you hear the rumour feel free to roll out the facts Targa is in great shape and in much better shape than many other motor sport categories and business in general We very much look forward to seeing how the last two rounds of the championship play out especially the 22nd running of Targa Tasmania on the revamped course that has reduced touring but not the competition length again ensuring that you will earn your plate at the Ultimate Tarmac Rally

We are sti l l recovering from our second Swisse Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge and I am happy to say that it was a roaring success implementing many of the lessons that were learnt in 2011 It is a very different experience for my team and gives them great insight into not only a different sport but also how different events come together giving them great skil ls to then go and deliver even better Targa events Our world has definitely changed a lot over the last five years and Irsquom sure no one would have foreseen in 2007 that we would one day run four Targa events a Festival at Longford an integral support role for Porsche on Carrera Cup and GT3 Cup Challenge and an Adventure Race for Mark Webber all in one year

And with all that in mind I just want to finish off by thanking All of our officials across every event There are l iterally thousands of people behind the scenes and some of our officials worked at Every event which is amazing It was fantastic to see our Targa officials working on the Challenge giving them a new experiences and making new friends We had Adelaide officials at Targa High Country lsquoTassiersquo officials in Adelaide It never ceases to amaze me and it is great to see how many have come along on the journey with us throughout 2012 I thank you all so much for your efforts It has been a big year and there is bigger to come in 2013 On the behalf of everyone on my team I wish you all a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year and we look forward to seeing you soon

On the course with Stuart Benson Sporting Director

Com-pe-ti-tion Noun A test of skill or ability In my mind a really attractive feature of targa events is how you can define your own competition goals ndash top steps of the podium category win class win targa trophy or finishers medallion although simply getting to the start is sometimes rewarding enough You can take just about any production car model created during the history of the motor vehicle equip it with safety gear and bring it along and play Whether its sleek and fast or quirky and full of character the car yoursquore passionate about can be enjoyed in the targa world and driven to the potential of your skill set That said not every car will be a winner and ironically itrsquos not the fastest ones that are always the most fun the drive In pursuit of the ultimate targa car to suit a given purpose a quick flick through previous entry lists will show the ownership evolution of many competitors and some make interesting reading

Logically many people start off with a car they already have then move into something more focused on their aspirational goals during a period of time With such a vast number of competitions there are many appealing choices of cars and this is sometimes engineered from an event point of view Showroom was developed as a cost effective club for hot hatches lower cost sports cars and Aussie heros from HSV and FPV TMR 4WD Showroom was developed for extreme limited modified Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutions and the Subaru Impreza WRX STi to run head to head Early and Late Classic as well as Classic Handicap are responsibly self explanatory Modern is for the latest and greatest and Early Modern is recreating modern history a period of time Irsquom very enthusiastic about having grown up in the turbo-era A topic of conversation at Targa High Country was the introduction of post-2002 996 series Porsche 911s running in Early Modern where the competition end date is actually 31 December 2002

The Run-on tolerance used a lot in the Classic competitions was the mechanism for this where a car of the same specification as its earlier like model is permitted to effectively be back-dated to an earlier category In the case of the 996 Turbo and GT3s that were moved from category 9 Modern to category 8 Early Modern a lengthy performance review was undertaken considering previous actual targa stage and leg times as well as exploration of mechanical specification of the standard cars and scope of permitted modification within the technical regulations The review established that aside from minor cosmetic variation a 2003-2005 996 911 is on a performance par with the 1999-2002 version and should therefore logically be should be included within the Early Modern field Thus further populating the exciting field with competitive cars reflecting the period now ten years on from when Targa Tasmania saw these original exotics doing battle for outright honors

This Targa season were delighted to have Other Side Productions as part of the Targa TV team to provide competitors access to high quality video production services for their own promotional use Over 2 million people viewed the Targa Championship on YouTube last year and now they can view you with a variety of different video and sponsorship options to suit all competitors Contact | Ben Sale 0434 906 673 or 03 9041 4002 benothersideproductionscom

Queenslander Tony Quinn has taken his Nissan GT-R to outright modern honours at Targa High Country after a day that took a big toll on the 165-car field The win is his first in the Targa series since Targa Tasmania in 2010 and is one better than his second placing here at Mt Buller in 2011 It leaves Quinn in top place in the Australian Targa Championship after the first two rounds Overnight leader Jason White had mechanical issues with his Lamborghini early on day two which left him stranded on the side of the road on the dayrsquos second stage Quinn took the lead and never looked back stretching his buffer over Victorian Matt Close in an Audi TT RS on every stage to cross the line at Mt Buller with a 56 second winning margin Motorsport veteran seven-time Bathurst winner Jim Richards finished in third place in his Porsche 911 GT2 RS 63 seconds further back Quinn was delighted to be back on top of the Targa podium with long-time co-driver Naomi Tillett ldquoIt was easyrdquo Quinn joked at the finish ldquoItrsquos the same as every other day ndash you go as hard and as fast for as long as you can and thatrsquos all we did ldquoThe car was good and wersquove had a great weekend The car was brand new last year and we had a lot of trouble with it but this yearrsquos itrsquos been very reliable ldquoIt would have been better if Jason (White) had stayed in the event so we kind of coasted home over the afternoon stages and itrsquos great to win here for the first timerdquo
