YOUTH NEWS

I was talking with David Lunceford about wisdom the other day. A great working definition for wisdom is applying knowledge to everyday life. But for us as followers of Christ, it is applying God’s Word to everyday life. I read an article the other day and it just had some great points for applying God’s Word to everyday life. 1. Learn God’s Ways. We will never make it a habit of applying the

Bible until we prove it’s worth in our life. And that means not just reading a portion of scripture each day but thinking about it, meditat-ing on it, and treasuring it in our hearts. We must desire more of Christ in our hearts minds and lives in order to continue to learn and grow to be like Him.

2. Live God’s Ways. When we read, we understand, and then we must move to obedience. Obedience is a necessary ingredient to life and growth in Christ.

3. Love God’s Way. As we study 1 John together, John makes a bold statement, if you don’t love others, you don’t love God. Jesus said all the commandments are summed up in these two: 1) Love God with everything we are and everything we have and 2) Love others as Christ loves us.

4. Long to spend time in prayer. Prayer is communicating with God. Talking with Him includes allowing Him time to speak to us. Do we long to spend time with God? Would we rather talk to Him than anyone else in our life? And the benefit of spending time with God is that we become more like Him.

Always good to do a check-up! See you Sunday! Randy

A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR

Hello everyone - this is your friendly, neighborhood Min- ister of Edu-cation - Allen Winstead. Pastor Chris is on a well deserved vacation this week. I will be filling in for him behind the pulpit on Sunday morning. As always it is an honor and a blessing for me to have the opportunity to share with you from God’s Word. My text will be John 1:43-52 - the call of Na-thanael. Now some of you with sharp memories may be thinking “Hasn’t he preached on this passage before?” And the answer is Yes . . . About five years ago. But this won’t be the same exact sermon. Some of it may be familiar, but I will be emphasizing some different points. Nathanael is only referred to by this name in the first chapter of John. Every other time we see him in the gospels he is referred to as Bartholomew. The name “Nathanael” means “God has given” while the name “Bartholomew” means “Son of Tolmai”. So “Bartholomew” is probably a name added to “Nathanael” for the purpose of identifying his family background. But there may be more to this word “Tolmai” than just a family name (we will explore this on Sunday morning). One my favorite aspects of this gospel account is how Nathanael was intro-duced to Jesus. His friend Philip encountered Jesus and was called by Jesus first. Philip was so excited by this encounter that he immediately ran to find Nathanael to tell him that he had found “the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph” The impression I get is that Philip had been looking for the Messi-ah, anxiously awaiting the arrival of Christ. This is why he was so excited upon meeting Jesus—because the wait was finally over. I would like to be a little more like Philip (and maybe you would too). Imagine if all of God’s people woke each morning sincerely thinking “This could be the day - I may meet Jesus face to face before this day is over.” However, the big difference between all of us and Philip is that, unlike Philip we cannot wait until we meet Jesus face to face to begin inviting our friends and family to come and meet Him also. On that day when we stand in the presence of Jesus it will be too late for us to bring anyone else to Him. And so we must do it today. To whom do you need to take the good news of Jesus Christ? If someone comes to mind then do it today. Afterall - this could be the day that we meet Jesus

CHURCH STAFF

For the month of July your church staff will be going TIE-LESS on Sunday mornings, and we invite all of you tie wearers to join us. Now we could try to come up with some symbolic meaning or theological precedence for leaving our neckties at home. But the simple fact of the matter is - it’s hot in Mississippi during the summer. So men (and any necktie wearing ladies out there) - why not ditch the tie for one month and come to church in comfort? NO TIE JULY starts Sunday, July 5th.
