Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 28, 2020
“Whoever welcomes you welcomes me and
whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me!”
In this Gospel Jesus calls for a great commitment from His followers to go beyond the normal bounds
of hospitality. Offer help to those who cannot repay, welcome the stranger with patience and openness
and be prepared to offer hospitality; the stranger may be a prophet in our midst.
Prayers for the Deceased

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord And let perpetual light shine upon her.

This week, we celebrate the feast of
Saints Peter and Paul. Our
suggestion is the feature movie St. Peter. It tells the story of
events in European and world history, the spread of
Christianity through the Roman Empire. The film shows the
reaction of Romans and Jews from a political and religious
standpoint, and it also deals with the immense obstacles
Christianity encountered in the early stages of its
development. As a dedicated follower of Christ, Peter
spreads the message of the Gospel across the land. Peter and
Paul meet and together they form a strong friendship in
preaching about Christ.

Sunday, July 5: 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy
burdens, and I will give you rest.”
Though we cannot escape suffering, Jesus
assures us that we are not alone. Jesus will
carry our crosses with us, side by side, when
we cannot bear the load of our suffering on
our own.
Sunday, July 12: 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time “Blessed are your ears, for they hear.”
Jesus explains His use of parables to teach.
The hearer of the message must engage in
some degree of reflection in order to
comprehend the full meaning. Some of us
hear the Word but will permit other cares to
choke out the meaning. Others receive the
Word and will produce abundant fruit.
Sunday, July 19: 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time “Explain to us the parable.”
Jesus once again uses parables to teach
His message. The parables of the wheat,
mustard seed and yeast remind us that we
can rarely comprehend how God is
acting in our lives until later on. It is
sometimes difficult to trust that the slow
work of God will make all things right –
in God’s own time.

St Thomas More’s New Southwest Parish Naming Survey
Archbishop Smith Invites You to Participate
Archbishop Smith has presented STM with the opportunity
to engage in the mission of the Church in a very concrete
way: to build a new church for the growing Catholic
community in southwest Edmonton.
What do you think would be the best name for the new
parish? His Grace has invited each of you to have input
to the naming of this new parish!
Our New Southwest Parish Naming Survey will run from
July 1 through to September 30. Details and a link to the e-
survey will be posted from July 1 on STM’s website and FB
page. Paper copies will also be available through the church
office.

Sacrament of Reconciliation
Sacrament of First Holy Communion
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, our
grade 2 and 3 students were unable to
celebrate the Sacraments after Easter as
planned. First Communion workbooks are
available for pickup through the child’s school (the 10
Edmonton Catholic Schools served by St.
Thomas More Parish) or at the Parish Office.
All other students can pick up their
workbooks from the Parish office during
regular office hours. We look forward to
celebrating the Sacraments in September.
Watch the bulletin for details!
General Directives - Celebration of Mass
Attendance
Expanded attendance limits as of June 15, determined by
the parishes and dependent on building size, staff and
volunteer capacity.
Attendees are expected to wear their own non-medical
masks (some masks will be provided through the
Government of Alberta’s program to distribute masks to
places of worship), sanitize their hands upon entry and exit,
answer self-assessment health check questions, and provide
contact information (name and phone number) before
entering the church. Attendees should also expect to sit in
designated pews to ensure 6’ physical distancing
requirement.
Anyone who has symptoms of sickness must remain home.
Enter at designated entrance door (for sign-up) and exit
through front doors directly after Mass (no social gathering
inside the church).
Liturgical Practices
No handshaking during the Sign of Peace.
At this time, Holy Communion may only be received in the
hand and there will be no distribution of the Precious
Blood.
Singing during Mass is not allowed during this phase, as it
has been shown to increase the spread of respiratory
droplets which can infect others.
Do you have a child aged 8 – 14 who would
like to become a Catholic?
