Instructions:Note: When choosing beads for this project, avoid using matt or frosted beads for the sb11a as these beads may not drape nicely. They are suitable for the sb11b as those are used as an accent and won’t rub up against each other. See the last page of this tutorial for color ideas.

Step 1Thread a #10 beading needle with a comfortable length of Fireline (I recommend starting with a length equal to your arm and a half, with the extra half folded back at the needle). String a stop bead (use a bead that is not part of this project). Pass through the stop bead twice, in the same direction, so your thread wraps around the bead and will hold the next beads in place. Leave about an 8 inch tail after the stop bead that you can use to attach the clasp at the end of the project. String 1 RT bead.

Step 2String 10 SB11a and 1 RT. Use the side hole of the RT bead (it does not matter which side, just make sure that you don’t use the middle hole yet). Pass back through the middle hole of the RT bead that you just strung, pulling snuggly so that all the beads sit smoothly against each other.

Step 3String 4 SB11a, 1SB11b, 1FP, 1 SB11b, and 4 SB11a. Pass through the middle hole of the first RT bead. Pass back through the other side hole of the RT (the one you didn’t use yet). Again, pull snugly so that all of the beads sit smoothly against each other. Do not pull too tightly -use medium tension.

Page 14: Tap & Hold the screen to show the top bar · 2016. 9. 24. · Pass back through the RT [s middle hole, pull snugly, and then pass through the RT [s first side hole and pull snugly.

Scalloped Sparkles Necklace

BLOG: WWW.HANDMADE-JEWELRY-CLUB.COM MEMBERSHIP: WWW.DIYJEWELRYMAKING.COM BLOG: DIY JEWELRY MAKING ISSUE 46

Step 4: String 4 SB11a, 1 SB11b, 1 FP, 1 SB11b, 1 BC, 1 SB11b, 1 FP, 1 SB11b, 4 SB11a. Pass through the last side hole of the next RT.

Step 5: Get in position to begin the sequence again: Pass back through the RT’s middle hole, pull snugly, and then pass through the RT’s first side hole and pull snugly.

Repeat Steps 2-5 until you have strung approximately 23 RT beads and the length is about 17” (the clasp will add the last inch). Check the length to see if it will fit nicely around your neck as you get close to the end. This necklace works best when it’s just a bit longer than a choker length. If it’s too long, it may twist when you wear it. Use medium tension as you add segments. If the bead segments begin to form a tight arch, you are using too much tension. They should form a very slight arch so that the necklace curves gently around your neck.

Step 6: String 11 SB11a. Make a loop by passing back through the RT, using the side hole that is open.Pass through the first side hole to complete the loop. Reinforce the loop by passing through all of the beads in this step one or two more times. End your thread by passing through a few beads, make a small knot between beads and pass through a few more beads. Repeat until your thread feels secure. Pass through a few more beads to getaway from the knot, and cut your thread.

Step 7: Open a jump ring and attach the loop to one half of your clasp. Close the jump ring securely.

Step 8: Remove the stop bead, thread your needle on the tail and repeat Steps 6 and 7 at the other end of the necklace.

Susan Sassoon

My beading journey began in 2011. After 25 years of being an architect, I decided to take up a new hobby that would soon become a great passion of mine. At first, it was just for fun, but after two years of beading, I started getting requests for patterns and my beading life began to grow when I opened my Etsy shop. Since then, my work has been published in Bead Style, Beadwork, and Bead and Button Magazines. As an architect, creating patterns comes naturally to me, as all of my patterns are easy to follow and include visual diagrams as well as step by step written instructions. Before I post patterns, they are tested by friends from beading groups and revised to make sure that they are as easy to follow as possible.

This pattern uses netting techniques, but is finished with round elements to create lovely curved scalloped edges. Use 11/0 Czech seed beads in iris blue and silver for the two-tone example, and transparent rainbow cream 11/0 Dyna-Mites seed beads (which look light yellow) for the single-color piece. I hope you enjoy this free beading pattern!

Learn to make this elegant sparkling triangular necklace. This project is based on rightangleweave (ROW). It is so-named because of the way the beads lie at right angles to one another. From this project, you will learn how to add rows, changing the direction of a weave, adding layers as well as simple wire jewelry making techniques. The project is catered to intermediate level, but the tutorial is written with a beginner in mind. It has clear step by step images to show you each step involving making the project. You can ask me question you have on the tutorial. No more getting stuck and frustrated on a confusing or just plain inaccurate pattern.

Step 1Attach a needle to a comfortable length of thread. To begin, we will make a diamond-shaped component using only A’s. It really is a square but it will look more like a diamond in the finished necklace so I am referring to it as a diamond.Make a row of six cubic right angle weave (CRAW) units.Note: This is the first side of the diamond.

Step 2Add five CRAW units perpendicular to the last unit of the first row.

Step 3Add five CRAW units perpendicular to the last unit of the row added in Step 2.Note: This new row should be parallel to the first side of the diamond.

Step 4To complete the final side of our diamond, add three CRAW units perpendicular to the last unit of the row added in Step 3.This row should be parallel to Side 2.

Step 5Add one CRAW unit that connects the last unit added to the first unit of the first row created in Step 1. Ensure you connect all four sides of each unit.Note: The diamond-shaped component is now complete.

Step 6Exit the A on the inner edge of the third unit of one side of the diamond.

Step 7Add two CRAW units at this point. These units should be on the inside of the diamond.

Step 8Add one CRAW unit that connects the last unit added to the closest perpendicular side. Ensure you connect all four sides of each unit.Note: The correct perpendicular side will only be one CRAW unit distance away while the incorrect side will be two units away.

Step 9Exit the A on the outer edge of the unit you just connected to in Step 8 (the third unit).Add a row of CRAW units that is half of your desired necklace length. (I made mine eight inches long).

Step 10After you have reached your desired length, string 3A and half of your clasp.

Step 11Go back through the last A strung.

Page 36: Tap & Hold the screen to show the top bar · 2016. 9. 24. · Pass back through the RT [s middle hole, pull snugly, and then pass through the RT [s first side hole and pull snugly.

Step 13Attach a new piece of thread to the diamond. Exit the A on the outer edge of the third unit on the side opposite where you attached the first half of your necklace.Add a row of CRAW units that is half of your desired necklace length. Then repeat Steps 10-12 to attach the other half of your clasp.

Step 14With a new piece of thread, create a row of five CRAW units. Then, add four units perpendicular to the final unit of the first row. This creates a ‘V’ shape.Remove the needle and leave the working thread hanging for now. You will use it later.

Step 12String 2A and pass through the A opposite where you began to attach the clasp.Reinforce the clasp. Weave the thread into the beadwork, tie several half-hitch knots and remove the excess thread

Step 15Using another piece of thread, create a row of four CRAW units. Then, add three units perpendicular to the final unit of the first row. This will create a second ‘V’ shape.

Step 16Exit the last A on the outer edge of the smaller ‘V’ just created.

Step 17Embellish the smaller ‘V’ shape:String 1B and pass through the next 1A on the outer edge.

Step 18Repeat Step 17 until you reach the end of the row.

Step 35String 1B and pass through the next 1A.

Step 38Continue through the next 2A and the first hole of 1C.

Step 39Reverse direction and pass through the second hole of the C you are exiting.

Step 40Centre the ‘V’ shapes at the bottom of the diamond. Position each C between the corresponding A’s of the diamond.Go through the A on the outer edge of the third unit of the diamond.Note: This A will follow the C you are exiting when the diamond and ‘V’ shapes are connected.

Other suppliesThread (I prefer using Fireline B or any high quality fishing line 0.12 - 0.15 mm), 2 needle size 12 or smaller, scissors, jump rings and claspWhen beading, we start from the central part of the necklace made of Preciosa Pip beads and fire polished beads. You’ll be beading row by row in two steps - first of all you’ll bead a base row (just with Pip beads and seed beads) and second you’ll embellish the base with a fire polished beads. When the central part of the necklace is done, you’ll just finish the necklace on both ends by tubular herringbone.

PART ONE - FIRST ROW - BASEStep 1

Use 2 needles, first part of beading is done with RAW stitch (you have to bead with two ends of a thread).Prepare a comfortable length of the thread. Pick up 1x Pip bead, 1x SB 8/0, 1x Pip bead and 1x SB 8/0. Weave cross through the firstly added Pip bead (see the scheme a). Slide beads to the center of the thread.

Pick up 1x SB 8/0 (do this with both ends of the thread) and then pick up 1x Pip bead (weave cross through this bead with both ends of the thread).Pull the thread well.

Repeat Step 1b) to have 4 Pip beads in a row. Pull the thread well. When beading with Pip beads, be careful if beads are staying in right position - all Pip beads should be in position as seen in the pictures below - should be headed outwards.

Pick up 1x SB 8/0 (do this with both ends of the thread) and weave cross through the very firstly added Pip bead (see the scheme d) – weave cross the Pip bead on the left side). Pull the thread well and tie a knot.

PART TWO - FIRST ROW - EMBELLISHMENTStep 2Thread should exit from a SB 8/0. Pick up 1x FP 3 mm and weave through a second SB 8/0 between two Pip beads (see the scheme a).

Weave back through the newly added firepolished bead and then go through a SB 8/0 the thread was coming from (see the scheme b). Pull the thread well.

When weaving through SB 8/0, it is important to go through a bead from both sides - fire polished beads are then staying right between Pip beads.

Step 3Thread should exit from a SB 8/0. Pick up 1x SB 11/0 and weave through the next SB 8/0. Repeat steps 2-3 to add FP 3 mm and SB 11/0 to each side of base.

PART THREE - ANY ADDITIONAL ROW - BASEStep 4The first row should be now completed. Thread should exit from a SB 8/0. Pick up 1x Pip, 1x SB 8/0 and 1x Pip bead. Weave through the next SB 8/0 in the base row (see the scheme a).

Weave back through the last added Pip bead (see the scheme b). Pull the thread well.

Page 48: Tap & Hold the screen to show the top bar · 2016. 9. 24. · Pass back through the RT [s middle hole, pull snugly, and then pass through the RT [s first side hole and pull snugly.

Step 5Thread should exit from a Pip bead, pick up 1x SB 8/0 and 1x Pip bead.Weave through the next SB 8/0 in the base row (see the scheme) and go back through the newly added Pip bead. Pull the thread well.

Step 6Thread should exit from a Pip bead, pick up 1x SB 8/0 and 1x Pip bead.Weave through the next SB 8/0 in the base row (see the scheme) and go back through the newly added Pip bead. Pull the thread well.

PART FOUR - ANY ADDITIONAL ROW - EMBELLISHMENTStep 8

Basically repeat steps 2-3. There is one slightly difference -fire polished bead is sewed between SB 8/0 and SB 11/0 (instead of two SB 8/0 as done in steps 2 and 3).Pull the thread well to strengthen up.Repeat steps 4-8 to create central part of the necklace. It should measures approx. 19 cm, but it depends on the amount of Pip beads you have and what do you like.

Step 7Thread should exit from a Pip bead. Pick up 1x SB 8/0 and weave from the top through the very first added Pip bead (see the scheme). Go through a SB 8/0 below Pip bead and weave back through a Pip bead. Pull the thread well.

PART FIVE - TRANSFER INTO TUBULAR HERRINGBONEStep 9When central "Pip bead" part of the necklace is done, it is time to complete the necklace (or bracelet if you wish). Thread should exit from a SB 8/0. Pick up 2x SB 8/0 and weave through the next SB 8/0 in the base row (see the scheme below) and go back through the second added SB 8/0. Pull the thread well.On the one edge of the central "Pip bead" part of the necklace, there will be missing SB 11/0 between Matubo beads. Don’t forget to add SB 11/0 to each gap between SB 8/0.Repeat steps 9-11 on both ends of the necklace.

Step 10Pick up 1x SB 8/0 and weave through the next SB 8/0 in the base row and go back through the newly added SB 8/0. Pull the thread well and repeat this step to add another SB 8/0.

Step 11Continue beading just with SB 11/0. Finish the necklace using tubular herringbone stitch (see the schemes below). Bead on both ends of the necklace until you reached preferred length of the necklace.

Step 12For attaching a clasp, SB 8/0 can be used. Add 1x SB 8/0 on the top of the finished tubular herringbone spiral (in the way you can easily passed through it a jump ring) and sew it securely with tubular herringbone.Tie-off and cut ends of the thread. You can attach the clasp now -use jump ring and add a clasp to each end of the necklace - use SB 8/0 on the top.Your "Kumihimo" Pip necklace is now ready to wear.

This necklace is made using Kongo Gumi, round braid kumihimo on the foam disk. The instructions and bead layout makes an 18 inch necklace before adding a clasp. For a longer necklace more seed beads could be added at the beginning and end of the design. The focal section can be made using either thorn beads or dagger beads. The bead placement given is for 2 complementary colours of thorn/dagger but the same colour could be used throughout. The seed beads in the focal section are also a different colour to the main necklace. They are blended to lead into and out of the flower.

For these instructions the centre bead must be 12mm or the ‘petals’ will not meet at the top.

Materials- Large hole Kumihimo disk/bobbins/bead stoppers- 1088 size 11 seed beads — Colour 1 138 size 11 seed beads — Colour 2- 19 5x16mm Dagger/Thorn beads — Colour 1 19 5x16mm Dagger/Thorn beads — Colour 2- 1 x 12mm bead for centre of flower- 8 x 1.40m S-lon/C-lon thread 0.5mm (Tex 210)- Wildfire beading thread or similar for attaching focal bead- Clasp — as desired

Braiding Instructions1. Cut 8 lengths of S-lon in your chosen colour and knot. Set the cords out on the diskas shown in the diagram below.

Tip: If using a small disk, a larger hole in the centre will allow the focal to sit comfortably without compromising the point of braiding.

2. Begin to load beads as per the bead layout chart overleaf. (Load all beads as it is difficult to add later)3. Once each cord is loaded, add a bead stopper and bobbin to keep your threads neat.Tip: I label the bobbin or cord with the corresponding number on the load chart. It helps to know when you have returned to number 1 so that you can drop beads from this thread first.4. Begin by braiding 32 movements as follows: 1 to 15, 17 to 31, quarter turn clockwise, 25 to 7, 9 to 23, quarter turn clockwise, continue with this pattern of top right to bottom right and bottom left to top left, quarter turn clockwise. When cord number 1 returns to the top and is the next strand to be moved begin to drop the beads.5. Continue braiding in the same way until all beads have been added. Ensure that the beads are securely in place and pushed down before moving on. The seed beads between the daggers may need a little encouragement to drop into the right place.6. When all beads are added, braid 32 movements without beads. Remove the braid from the disk and tie the end of the braid in an overhand knot to stop it unravelling.

1. When the braid is finished the focal section will have a natural bend due to the smaller beads being on the inside.

2. Cross the two long braid sections until the two sides of daggers/thorns meet. Position the focal bead in the centre of the crossed section.

3. Place a needle loaded with Wildfire or similar beading thread between the daggers/thorns and pass it through the braid, the focal bead and the braid at the opposite side. Leave a 4-5cm tail for tying. Repeat passing the thread through the central bead 2 or 3 times finishing back at the start point. Tie a double overhand knot in the threads, pulling tight so that it is hidden inside the focal section.

4. Finally stitch through the cross over section at the top of the focal, pulling the braid tight to ensure the ‘petals’ meet. Leave a 4-5cm tail at the back of the focal for knotting. Pass the thread through both braids, pulling threads tight so they are hidden between the seed beads until secure. The bead should now sit in the centre of the cross over section. Double knot the thread to the tail and trim.

5. Finish the ends of the braid by binding with thread and applying glue. Add clasps and your necklace is finished!

At end of necklace, place calotte, jump ring. Add necklace clasps at both end of necklace.

You have just created a nice necklace! Well done!

Adding new thread:In the event, the beading thread getting shorter or break, you can add a new thread a few rows from the end, then weave this new thread through the last few rows of beads to secure them. Then continue weaving with the new thread. Trim the old one after you have a few new rows of beads secured. To end a thread:weave back into the beadwork, following the existing thread path and tying two or three halfhitch knots between beads as you go. Change directions as you weave so the thread crosses itself. Sew through a few beads after the last knot, and trim the thread.
