Famous for its large wildlife — particularly the “Big Five” game of lion, leopard, African elephant, rhino, and Cape buffalo — Tanzania is also rich in other species, including a large diversity of birds and the annual movement of wildebeest and other grazing herbivores across the Serengeti Plains, one of the greatest spectacles in the world. On this 11-day expedition, you’ll experience many of the treasures that Tanzania has to offer. Interact with people of various Tanzanian cultural background including Maasai warriors and the Iraqw, during visits to local villages. Explore great wildlife destinations and world- famous national parks and reserves such as Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, and the famous Serengeti National Park. Learn about the ecology and behavior of many East African mammals and then study them in their natural habitats. Visit Tarangire National Park, famous for its population of elephants. Tour Ngorongoro Crater, home to a variety of wildlife including zebras, lions, wildebeest and the densest population of predators in Africa. Game drives in the Serengeti, site of the largest migration of wildebeest in the world. Travel to Lake Manyara National Park to find its unusual tree-climbing lions. take a walk on the rim. In the afternoon, relax and enjoy panoramic views of the crater. The Ngorongoro Crater forms a bowl of about 265 square kilometers with sides up to 600 meters deep, making it the largest intact caldera in the world. The crater accounts for just one-tenth of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and is home to many species of wild game and birds. Almost every species of African plains mammal lives in the crater, including the endangered black rhino and the densest population of predators in Africa. Overnight at Rhino Lodge. (BLD)

MAY 22 - LAKE MANYARATravel to the Ngorongoro Crater after breakfast. Descend down the crater rim and watch as the flora opens to grassy plains throughout the crater floor. Revel in a day full of spectacular scenery and game viewing in what has been described the “eighth wonder of the world.” After lunch, transfer to the highlands to walk through the farms and villages of the Iraqw to learn farming and brick-making techniques, as well as visit a local school. Proceed to Lake Manyara for the night. Overnight at Eileen’s Trees Inn. (BLD)

MAY 23 - ARUSHAMorning game drive around Lake Manyara National Park, famed for its unusual tree-climbing lions. It also features a large elephant population, rich bird life in the forests and thousands of flamingos on the soda lake. After lunch, transfer to Arusha to freshen up and have an early dinner before transfering to the airport for your return flight. Day room at Ahadi Lodge. (BLD)

MAY 14 - EN ROUTEFly to Washington-Dulles Airport. Overnight at Washington-Dulles Airport Hotel.

MAY 15 - EN ROUTEDepart the US for Tanzania.

MAY 16 - ARUSHAArrive to Kilimanjaro Airport and transfer to your lodge in Arusha. Receive a pre-safari briefing by your guide. Overnight at Ahadi Lodge. (D)

MAY 17 - TARANGIREAfter breakfast, depart with packed box lunches and head to Tarangire National Park for a game drive. Here you will find herds of up to 300 elephants, migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest, and eland. Thirsty animals wander hundreds of parched kilometers knowing that they will find water here. It’s an amazing concentration of wildlife and a smorgasbord for predators. Tarangire’s pythons climb trees, as do its lions and leopards. It’s also the one place in Tanzania where dry country antelope such as the fringe-eared oryx and long-necked gerenuk are regularly observed. After a full day of adventure, head to your camp and relax. Overnight at Maramboi Tented Camp. (BLD)

MAY 18 - SERENGETIAfter breakfast, transfer to Esilalei, a small village, to experience the Maasai lands and lifestyle. Visit the local school that is responsible for bringing education back to the village. Next depart for Serengeti National Park, with boxed lunches and game watching along the way. In the afternoon take a game drive in the rolling grasslands of the Serengeti. Return to camp for dinner. Overnight at Kati Kati Camp. (BLD)

MAY 19 - SERENGETISpend the day exploring the area. Boxed lunch included so you have the full day to immerse yourself in the wildlife of the Serengeti National Park. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the location of the famous annual migration of more than a million wildebeest. Other wild game includes zebra, gazelle, buffalo, elephant and giraffe. MAY 20 - SERENGETI Set out for another full day of game drives at Serengeti National Park. This evening hear a talk about the Cultural Rites of Passage in Tanzania. Overnight at Mbalageti Safari Camp. (BLD)
